Awesome. No matter what you expect you're in for a surprise and a treat.
I'm a die hard Who fan but was really disappointed that they chose and opera singer to do Roger Dasltrys part of Jimmy. Other than that it was a great show
incredible one in a lifetime event that i was able to share with my wife and daughter.
Was disappointed. Pete played half of the first set and was non existant in the second. Did not even come out for Reign on me.
The show, unfortunately, just missed the mark. And PS I understand we were not going to see The Who. The orchestra and choir were excellent but the arrangements were underwhelming and the tenor Alfie Boe, although obviously talented, was not the right choice. His voice was simply wrong for the music. The sound seemed spotty at times and the second set was clearly better than the first. Always nice to see this amazing opera house but this event was a minor bust. There was not enough Pete on stage as well and I think peoples expectations were very different than what they saw (for numerous reasons) and that added to the disappointment.
I still have goosebumps from this performance. I loved hearing this performance done this way. Musical genius and Alfie has one powerful voice. Loved!!!!!!!
The lead singer had a strong voice and seemed to try his best, but he was really miss-cast creating a horrible performance plus he was way too cheesy, only the duets with Pete T and Billy I made it tolerable. The Orchestra seemed to have slept through the whole performance. I should have took pics of the two horn guys sleeping. Granted there is no replacement for the original Quadrophenia, but this presentation was poor at best.
Venue: My seat (2nd row) was too close to the stage and speakers on the stage were slightly blocking my view. But other than that, the performance was great. VIP Package: TM had not notified us by mail until one day before the show about what time/where/how to get to the place for sound check or pre-party. That's way too slow as some people are traveling from out of state. Show: Just awesome. Pete Townshend is a genius.
I attended this concert with my brother & we are huge fans of The Who. We grew up listening to classic rock & Quadrophenia was one of our favorite albums. I didn't know who Alfie Boe was but we were hoping to see Billy Idol & Pete Townshend perform these songs together. They were hardly in the show. It was 98% Alfie Boe, who has a fine voice for Broadway but not for this! This show needed a R&R voice! On the few songs that Billy & Pete did perform Alfie sang even louder, drowning them out & he annoyingly jumped around the stage like he was Richard Simmons getting ready to give an exercise class. He took the "ROCK" out of "ROCK OPERA!" If you are a fan of Pete Townshend skip this & go see THE WHO. If Pete & Billy carried this show, as they should have, it would have been amazing!!!
Religious experience. Unbelievable sound and emotion.
Exquisite!!! Marvelous!!! Stupendous!!! Masterpiece extraordinaire!!! BRAVO to Pete Townshend and Alfie Boe. Much praise to Rachel Fuller for coordinating this!
The orchestra and the material were great as expected. But the lead singer was a distraction from the music and was extremely boring. I felt he was distracting me from the music. Billy Idol's involvement was bizarre at best. Although he seems to be in good voice and has a great stage presence, they just kept bring him on and off stage for very brief appearances all of which were duets. You couldn't even hear Billy as he was drowned out by that screaming tenor. We were a group of six and none of us made it past the first act.
I had high hopes for the orchestration of this classic album, but there were a few problems. The orchestra could not keep up with some the chord changes; Billy Idol did far too much mugging and sneering and kept singing ahead of the beat; Boe's operatic voice had no dynamics; and on "Love Reign O'er Me" had what sounded like a mistaken chord in the beginning. Great when the melodies shone through, but otherwise uninspiring.
What a GREAT show, from beginning to end. The venue, the music, the singing. So very happy that we decided to see this show. Extremely enjoyable. A Must see.
Too long intermission and did not realize Pete Townsend would sing so little
Hearing that music at the Met with a full orchestra was amazing. The sound was however. We could not hear the massive choir and the artists mics were iffy. It was a bit frustrating because there was so much potential. I love the music and would and will give Pete another chance.
Pete looked and sounded so old ....could not hear Billie idol.music was incredible ...great .alfie was amaziing when he remembered when to start singing. The whole show seamed a bit unrehearsed. Not tight ...surprised for Pete.
I wonder if when people Townsend originally scored Quadrophenia if this is what he had in mind This was the truest version of a rock opera I've ever seen To have it at the Metropolitan opera house was beyond imagination A full orchestra with 100 person choir in the back made the show Plus the energy that Alfie brought to the stage was amazing I wish they were doing more than five shows in the United States I would see it again
Townsend, Quadraphenia, what could go wrong? Turns out everything. I was under the misconception that there would be a rock band with a great vocalist signing Daltrey's parts backed up by an incredible orchestra and choir. No go. The main vocalist had a bellicose, over the top delivery and seemed to have no conception of the incredible lyrics or story. His interpretation was more in line with an opera than with R&R. At least an opera is usually sung in another language, there's no excuse for yelling your way through some of the most introverted and sensitive lyrics in the history of R&R. Pete's contribution was tired and weak. He seemed to be playing the role of a burnt-out former rock icon. I would have been embarrassed for him if I weren't so disappointed. The orchestra tried but they were hampered by very poor orchestra arrangements and a conductor that pushed the songs out so quickly, you'd think that he had some place else to be. The vocalist could barely keep up. The only bright part was the singing of Billy Idol. Look, he's no prize though I've got to give it to him for his great interpretation and delivery. You can imagine how weak the evening was when Mr. Idol was the best part. Package all that together with a horrible sound system. The engineer must have hated the entire world. There was a massive choir that you could barely hear, Pete's guitar sounded like it was played from another planet, and the annoyingly operatic vocalist was drowning out everything and everyone. Major disaster. Just makes me wonder when and why Pete Townsend sold out.
5+ Stars for the 130+ piece orchestra & choir. Incredible. Alfie Boe miscast in this production. It ruined it for us. Couldn't wait for him to stop singing. Roger Daltrey was sorely missed. Don't waste your money of this overpriced fiasco.
