About Pensacola Opera

Pensacola Opera in Concert

Established in 1983 to bring world-class performances to audiences in Florida, Pensacola Opera is proud to present its latest season of comedy and classics. The Pensacola Opera’s mainstage productions may be enjoyed by audiences in one of two ways. In addition to the in-person, limited-capacity presentations at the Saenger Theatre, patrons can also experience the Pensacola Opera via special livestreams. The live experience, of course, fills the senses with the music and drama of spirited productions like Don Giovanni, Carmen and H.M.S. Pinafore.

Pensacola Opera Background

The Pensacola Opera’s story began in 1983 when a group of opera lovers from all walks of life joined together with the shared mission of mining the area’s rich array of talent to create local productions. The Pensacola Chamber Opera was the first name of this grassroots company, which made its debut with an English-language production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, presented in three performances to a total audience of 700. In the early 1990s, the young company now known as the Pensacola Opera found its performance home at the Saenger Theatre, a historic 1,800-seat venue in downtown Pensacola. From this invaluable base, the Pensacola Opera began to offer season subscriptions as well as the many community and educational outreach programs that have earned the company recognition. By the 2000s, a company that started as an entirely volunteer-run labor of love had become a more professional organization with a wide range of artistic and educational endeavors. The 25th anniversary season in 2008 included productions in new venues such as Northwest Florida State College (then Okaloosa-Walton College) in Niceville. Many more milestones followed, such as the 2009 reopening of the renovated Saenger Theatre with a wildly successful production of Aida, and a regional tour for the company’s first original commissioned opera, The Widow’s Lantern by David Ott. In January 2020, stage director Fenlon Lamb wowed Pensacola audiences with his production of Don Giovanni. Marking its 38th season in 2021, the Pensacola Opera continues to greatly enrich the cultural life of Northwest Florida.

    Anachronistic mishmash

by Susannah on 1/29/20Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

How can you threaten a mortal enemy with a Tommy gun in an 18th century opera? You can't. No more than you can update the zeitgeist of Mozart's era to the mores of today! The music and singing were great, but the playful sexual dialog of the Rococo era just doesn't translate to the Me Too era. One would have to be totally ignorant of history to find this anachronistic comparison acceptable. And let's add just one more observation. Opera, by its very nature, is intended to be lush. —A visual, as well as an auditory treat. This production was an obvious attempt to save pennies. The set, the costumes, were more than disappointing. A few wisps of tattered netting and a movable gray staircase is a minimal set, but not a creative modern one!

    ❤️❤️ Bucket List Item

by Denise on 1/29/20Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

First time attending an Opera and it was fantastic. The theater was beautiful and the performers were outstanding. You will never encounter a more helpful and pleasant staff at a facility. The experience was everything I was hoping for and more!

    Opera is for all

by Mozart lover on 1/27/20Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

The theater has wonderful acoustics but I was so uncomfortable in the chair all I could do was anticipate the intermission. Loved the paper costumes. I love opera especially Mozart’s. The singers had wonderful projection and clarity of voices. The one thing I take umbrage with is connecting this opera to the “Me too” movement. If you want to make a statement fine just keep it out of my opera. I go to enjoy them and get lost in a story for a couple hours. Not there to make a political statement.

    The opera was well donr

by cindy on 3/20/19Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

I enjoyed every part of this more modern opera. I would have enjoyed it more if the woman behind me would have stopped her loud remarks. I have been to other operas in other cities and I have never encountered such rude behavior. The Saenger is a wonderful venue. I would go to this opera again and I will recommend this to my friends.

    Nice Production in Small Theater

by stormdeb on 3/21/18Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

Man of La Mancha is one of my favorites, and I had seen very beautiful productions in both Philadelphia and Dallas; and I wanted to see it again and share it with my family. We had recently moved to Pensacola, so we had not gone to the Saenger Theater before. This review is probably more about the theater than the play. As for the production of the play, I thought it was very well done considering the size of the stage. The cast was excellent and very talented. As for the theater, it was beautiful. However, I found the seating cramped and a bit uncomfortable with no leg room at all. The seats are not staggered and the center stage was blocked from view by the person sitting in front of me. (We had five $90 tickets in the center balcony Row H.) I would definitely recommend the experience, but be prepared to be a bit uncomfortable.

Man breaks girl's heart, she kills herself

by Beetman on 1/31/18Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

That's the storyline and many operas of Butterfly's period had similarly melodramatic stories. It may not be the thing you wanna go see to put your Significant Other in an upbeat mood for the evening. For me, the music in these shows is as important as the drama. On that score, Puccini is at or near the top of the list. He has more iconic arias from other operas such as Turandot, Tosca etc than from Madama Butterfly. Nonetheless, Butterfly is a famous work that deserves seeing at least once by anyone interested in opera. This performance in Pensacola FL was well-done. There was a simple stage set that never changed and, as a guy remarked in the bathroom at intermission, "there's not a helluva lot of action." That's the nature of the show. That simple stage set was fine and the key players did a great job. Their singing quality far exceeded what I expected. Kudos for all the traveling stars as well as the local fill-ins. By the way, the local pit orchestra also did a fantastic job. .

MARY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS ROCKS IN AIDA!

by Ginny581 on 1/25/17Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

What a magical evening - filled with emotion, color, rich voices, lovely music - and Mary Elizabeth Williams was a standout as Aida. Also enjoyed Arnold Rawls. It is easy to understand why this is a true standard in opera, at an international level. The message is indeed universal - love, jealousy, passion, pain, loss, sacrifice, compromise and death are all included in that message.

Great performance and cast! Wish I understood more Italian, as reading the prompt took away from the experience, but it was nice that they had the translation. Definitely recommend!

La Boheme Opera was masterfully presented

by CortB on 1/28/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

The cast, set design, and orchestra music of this opera was perfection. The venue of the Saenger Theatre was intimate and a beautiful experience from any seat. Although the Opera was about a depressing subject, it was beautifully executed. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will attend more operas at the Pensacola Saenger.

    A Bit Above Adequate

by JeromeFrank on 1/26/15Pensacola Saenger Theatre - Pensacola

The orchestra was excellent! Mimi had a huge wobble in her lower register ... no doubt the result of bad vocal training. The wobble was not present in her upper register, where she soared quite beautifully. Rodolfo--while handsome--does not really have a vocal tone suited for this type of major, starring role. His voice is just really not very pretty to listen to. Marcello was robustly handsome, with a matching voice. Colline was probably the best voice in the cast. Very free & resonant. Schaunard, who is adorably edible, has absolutely no business on an operatic stage. He couldn't be heard in the second row, where I was seated. He'd be much better suited for miked Broadway productions. Musetta hit all the right notes! It was obvious that a good deal of effort went into the staging, which was very nicely executed; along with the directing, as the acting was also well done. The choir was efficient in the Cafe Momo scene. There was one glaring set error, having to do with the lack of a step to go up & down from a precipice at stage right ... made movement of the actors quite awkward.
