Penn State Nittany Lions Men's Basketball History

Penn State men’s basketball has had many winning moments over the years. They include 10 NCAA tournament berths, including a Final Four run, and 11 appearances in the National Invitation Tournament (including two championships since 2009).

Penn State's lone Final Four appearance came in 1954. The Lions were coached that year by Elmer Gross and led by junior Jesse Arnelle, who scored 21 points per game and hauled in nearly 12 rebounds per game. After dropping Toledo, ousting Louisiana State and dispatching Notre Dame, Penn State fell to La Salle in the semifinal, 69-54. The Nittany Lions would go on to beat USC, 70-61, in the national third-place game.

In 2017-18, the Nittany Lions took home their second NIT championship. As a No. 4 seed, Penn State knocked off No. 5 seed Temple, No. 1 seed Notre Dame and No. 2 seed Marquette to reach the semifinals, where they romped over Mississippi State. PSU then beat Utah in the final at Madison Square Garden. In the 2023 NCAA Tournament, Penn State advanced to the second round.

  • Less than ideal

by CB60 on 2/18/25Bryce Jordan Center - University ParkRating: 2 out of 5

My complaint has to do withthe new parking policy. Purchasing parking on Park Mobile is not an issue but how it is managed on gameday is my issue. Even though there are attendants on site no one checks whether you have a parking permit so the instructions are you must pull inparking spots so your liscense plate is in visible from the parking aisles. The issue is where when you used to be able to back i it was easy to xit after the game but now everyone is trying to backout and jockey for a position in the exit line. And to compound it last Saturday the B-ball game traffic was exitng and there was traffic entering the lot to park for a 5:00 hockey game. So people backing out and traffic flowing both directins in the aisle. And even though there are gates at the back of the lot that could have been used to exit they were all closed. It was a major mess - took 40 minutes to getout of my parking spot. Also on a previous vistit for a "Childrten Under 12 Free Game"purchase of tickets was a bad experience also. You would think after having this promotion for a couple years there would be a better process inplace than waiting to the last minute to institute a procedure to purchase those tickets. Designate the areas that are open for the special tickets and have it live at least one month before the game to purchase tickets.

  • Ok seats

by Kari on 1/1/24Bryce Jordan Center - University ParkRating: 3 out of 5

Thought we were getting great seats. When we got to our seat there was a large water container right in front of our 4 seats and none of us could see anything going on on the court. We asked the team if they could move the water container but they ignored us. We went to the ticket booth and told them about it so they moved us to a better location.

  • Fantastic Venue!

It was a tremendous 18-point second half comeback by Penn State to beat Ohio State 83-80. It was truly an electric atmosphere in the Bryce Jordan Center, a wonderful basketball venue. From the opening player introductions to the final buzzer, it was a captivating experience.

Didn’t expect to enjoy the view from our seats, but they were fantastic. We could see the entire court and the angle was awesome! The best part is the buzzer beater shot for the win! The crowd went absolutely wild and we were able to see that with a Birds Eye view! We Are…

  • Heart pounding!

by CK on 3/8/23Bryce Jordan Center - University ParkRating: 5 out of 5

I was really not excited after the first half but was hoping the Lions could make some adjustments (stop throwing the ball away!) in the second half! My son love Dread and he was the catalyst in that comeback! Excited to see if they can keep the momentum going into the Big 10 tournament!

Sat in section 111. Had a group of 15. Had a great time! Got a chance to hang with the players and have some of my basketball team do photo and autograph opportunities and we are thankful and enjoyed our chance to have the experience on senior day!
