Pavement on Tour

For the first time in more than a decade, '90s indie rock band Pavement are sending nostalgia shockwaves to fans and audience members around the world with their 2022 reunion tour set to hit more than 30 cities across North America, the UK and Europe. Known perhaps as the line of demarcation between punk and garage alternative, Pavement are considered to be one of the most important indie rock bands of the '90s, drawing parallels to Built to Spill, R.E.M., the Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Despite making waves nearly 30 years ago, Pavement's timeless sound continues to draw in fans -- whether they're hearing them for the first time or looking for a dose of nostalgia. While Pavement's sound and style led to an underground, cult-classic following, the band did achieve fringe mainstream success with their hit "Cut Your Hair" from their 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Other studio releases include their 1992 debut Slanted and Enchanted, 1995's Wowee Zowee, 1997's Brighten the Corners, and 1999's Terror Twilight. Most recently, the group has re-released their most successful album with previously unreleased music. Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, is a 45-track live set featuring the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, 28 unreleased tracks, and a the previously unreleased new single "Be the Hook."

Pavement Live in Concert

Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg were childhood friends from Stockton, California, who had a passion for music at an early age. However, before forming Pavement,  Malkmus spent time at the University of Virginia where he graduated with a degree in history. It wasn't until after his time in college that he returned home and the two formed the garage band that was part of the underground rock wave that saturated the music space in the '90s. Pavement recorded their first EP, Slay Tracks: (1933-1969) in 1989 in a local studio run by Gary Young and released it under Young's label Treble Kicker. Young was officially added to the group with the recording of the follow-up project Demolition Plot J-7 under the label Drag City Records. The band would hit the touring scene for the first time in 1991 with the release of the EP Perfect Sound Forever where they added bassist Mark Ibold and a second drummer, Bob Nastanovich. Pavement released their debut album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992, garnering critical praise that spread throughout the underground rock scene. They saw mainstream success with the single "Cut Your Hair," which made the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and became an MTV phenomenon with the coinciding music video.

Throughout their career, Pavement have drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like the Warner Theatre to capacity.

    OMFG

by OldManClark on 6/27/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

I have wanted to see this band for ages, and never thought I would have a chance. They definitely did not disappoint. The band play a solid set and never missed a beat. It did not seem like it had been ten years since they played together but was as if they were playing in their prime. They still look the same and rocked as hard as ever. The crowd had a good time, and sang along to every song. Gary Young showed up and played the last few songs with them and really seemed to enjoy performing more than anyone. Great show!!!

    Better than ever...

by mcpain on 6/27/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Pavement did not disappoint! They sounded great, put some nice live twists on old songs. Had the crowd into it. Were enthusiastic and into the music. Loved it.

    simply magical

    by simpsonsfiend75 on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

i never thought i would get to see this band live. i didnt get into their music in college until around 2004--2006. i've actually had 2 or 3 dreams where the band had reunited and i was at their concert. my friends from college are all in love with this band too. i was mesmorized to be only 20-30 feet from stephen malkmus. they played tons of great songs including plenty from the first 2 albums and the watery, domestic EP. i wish they played more from wowee zowee, but honestly, they could have played that whole album and i would have loved every moment, i really wish they did grave architecture, AT & T, best friends arm, father to a sister of thought

    pavement back in form

by peaceink on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Felt like a homecoming of sorts, and SM said as much. From the earnest take of Grounded to the Gary-inspired sloppiness of Summer Babe, these guys were in the moment and glad to be playing on home turf.

    Phenomenal

    by gmc1962 on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

The show was phenomenal, the night was beautiful under the stars at the Greek. I could have done without Gary Young's drunken ending though

Pavement still not grown up's, but still rockin

by MarcusCollar on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Amazing show they still as a group have the same dynamic that they left for dead years ago. Couldnt help but see Malkmus as like a zombie version of his teenage self, seemingly making old lyrics and riffs seem new with his proto-brat method. Genius! Oh and Spiral staris needs to learn how to take a joke on stage, it's Stephens world he's just allowed to be there.

    Pavement

by bleubleubleubleu on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

It was pretty good, not mind-blowing. I'm a big fan of Pavement (I've listened to all their albums, but this is my first Pavement concert): they sound much better live than on record (which justifies the four stars, after all!). The crowd at the front of the stage was really lively (I couldn't get up front - really densely packed crowd. At the back, things were a lot more laid back so maybe I missed out by staying back). Opening band was great and Gary Moore was fun. To put things in perspective: a religious experience deserves five starts; an excellent concert gets four; a good one gets three; an average one, two and a half; a bad one, one star; and a terrible one, zero stars. So go and watch them!

    Well-Executed Museum Piece

    by Chappy67 on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

It was nice to see Pavement again after all these years, but without any new material this show was really just an opportunity to reconnect with the past. I saw Pavement's first Bay Area appearance at the Kennel Club in May 1992, and over 10 additional shows between 1992-99. You cannot overestimate the significance Pavement had on musical styles in the '90s, and the influence they had over me and my social circle during those years. Having said all this, the guys are all comfortably in their 40s now, and the vitality and youthful edge is gone. It's been replaced by a well-rehearsed machine (versus the notoriously sloppy and "hit or miss" qualities of their shows in the '90s). In this sense, I was reminded of The Police reunion shows a couple years ago. The tunes were slowed down and polished up, not the angular chaos of the originals. It's all good. The band came out and opened with "Cut Your Hair" and put a perma-grin on my face. This was a real treat especially since I never thought I'd get to see the band again. If the band decided to actually make new music together my enthusiasm would be higher. Otherwise, this was like visiting a museum. A very good museum.

    The 90s are back

by theboxelder on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

Pavement is my favorite band of all time and seeing them live was a real thrill. The show was amazing. Every song of theirs was of high caliber and they put on an exceptional show. The band chemistry was there, jokes were plentiful, and each song was played better then I remembered. Gary Young even made an appearance at the end. The show was unforgettable and even non-pavement fans were blown away by this performance. Pavement is synonymous with the word slacker, but in this show you know they were trying. They played with a lot of heart and soul. The opening act was also amazing. Quasi is an amazing pop band and total fan service for SM & the Jicks fans. Pavement really put on an amazing show and each song was of the highest quality. I can't recommend them enough. They are the last great rock band and the pinnacle of the 90s. And this reunion is a testament to that. Pavement survived the test of time and they're better then ever.

Same band from the albums (first time I've seen them live), played pretty much everything I hoped for, and more. Second show on US soil this decade...but still in top form.

    PAVEMENT at the Greek

by bsutterley on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

They had a great set starting with Cut Your Hair and ending with my most favorite and first heard song Here. The Greek's probably my most favorite theater; outdoors, huge, open. But Pavement, I mean. I've been to concert's before but have not connected as much with any of them like I have this one. This band is my soundtrack. My only complaint was the opening. I thought the band was great, but it just ran too long. I'm not there to see you, I want Pavement!

    Pavement Ist Rad!

    by elixxrx66 on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

It was everything I ever wanted it to be and then some. I've waited 11 years for this ever since they played the Fillmore back in 97 and it was sold out and there was a queue around the block (Needless to say I didn't get in). They sounded so good and they were having fun. They played almost everything I could have asked. Gary Young even joined them onstage to play some songs. Same ol' Gary. He dropped it big time during Two States and they almost had to stop. I could only imaging what was going through Steven's mind. He took it all in good humor and in stride though. But it was like Pavement circa 92 so it was cool. All in all the best show I've seen in a long time.

    pavement forever!

by blueingenue on 6/26/10Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

I've followed Stephen Malkmus solo career, which has been quite good, but have been pining for a Pavement reunion for some time. I now had my wish and feel grandly satisfied from the experience. The band was tight and they played all my favorites and then some. They even humorously bantered with their crowd of adoring fans. I hope they continue to make beautiful music together. Long Live Pavement!

Ran very smoothly, all the acts were friendly and energetic, played for hours on end. The venue had enough bathrooms. The venue could have had more food venues, however.

    Pavement delivered

I never saw Pavement in the 1990s/early 2000s, but was completely satisfied. They were tight!
