About

"Watching Patti Smith perform live – for the first, second or fifth time – feels like a life-changing experience.”- THE INDEPENDENT (Field Day)

“It’s a performance destined for the festival’s All-Time Greatest list” – Glastonbury Mojo

It has been eight years since Patti Smith ‘the godmother of punk’ last toured Australia, and nearly 41 years since the release of her first and most celebrated recording Horses. Horses was conceived to be, in her description, “three chord rock merged with the power of the word.”

“Patti Smith gives a fresh force to songs she wrote 40 years ago” –Metro

“Horses and its shamanistic punk poet siren are undiminished 40 years on” theartsdesk.com

Best-selling author, performance poet & visual artist Patti Smith’s list of artistic accomplishments doesn’t end there. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, recipient of the Polar Music Prize, a human rights activist and also holds the honour of “Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres”  from the French Ministry of Culture.

She will be accompanied by two members of the original group, Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty, bassist / keyboardist Tony Shanahan, who has been a part of her band for twenty years and Andy York to perform Horses in its entirety during this not-to-be missed tour, as well as several time-honoured favourites.

In November of 1975, Patti Smith and her band recorded her debut album Horses at the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York City. An album that has come to be regarded as a seminal and landmark recording, that continues to have resonance and relevance for succeeding generations of musicians and artists. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Smith honour the lasting influence of Horses on this exclusive Australian tour.

“This is protest music. But it is protest with a fierce edge that seamlessly weaves a new politics into a rich legacy of rock-and-roll rebellion: She is celebrating a connection between music and movements that is swaggering and confident and more than ready to declare—as Smith does—that “we’re gonna change the fucking world!” ” – The Nation

“It will be a true, proud celebration.”  Patti Smith

Patti Smith and Her Band at the Bowery Ballroom

by Sharonsinyc on 1/2/12Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Patti's performance was incredible. Patti is one of the few remaining"true artists". Her music and poetry reaches inside and grabs hold of your soul. I can't wait until next year.

    What Can I Say?

by Jojoseahorse on 1/1/12Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

This woman just keeps getting better and better in every way. She never disappoints; she draws on her rich catalogue to keep us entertained, her energy and obvious delight in her performance are an inspiration and a joy to behold, and she seems to get more beautiful and youthful as she matures! She is just precious - it is a privilege to spend an evening in her presence :)

A tradition comes to an end

by Art0330 on 1/1/12Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

For 14 years, Patti Smith has come home to NYC and performed 3 shows leading into New Years Eve at the Bowery. This will be the last of the series, according to sources at The Bowery. There was no mention of this at Thursday night's concert, because it just didn't matter. To call Patti a performer would be a disservice. She relates to the audience as if we were sitting in her living room, belts her songs, meaning every word sung. Overheard in the crowd; How old is she? I think she's around 65. No...really...how old is she?

by ferrad on 1/1/12Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

I'm at old time Patti Smith fan, and I was glad that she played a lot of her earlier stuff. Classic versions of Land, Gloria, Because the Night. Great 65th birthday party!

    When She's 64 :)

by Jojoseahorse on 1/4/11Bowery Ballroom - NYC

I never miss Patti's birthday show; she never disappoints. She just gets better and better, she never slows down. She opened with "Ask The Angels", an old favourite, and managed to cover all eras of her stellar career. Highlights for me were a couple of cover versions: "Strawberry Fields Forever", proceeded by her sharing a memory of when she used to listen to that song while going through a difficult period in her young life, and now marvelling at the fact that she has come so far that she is on a stage sharing it with her fans, and "Daydream Believer" in honour of her friend Johnny Depp. Tony Shanahan also did a great job on vocals on the latter; the whole band was excellent. Patti is so beautiful, she doesn't age, and still has the energy of a teenager! We should all be so blessed. It is a privilege to spend an evening in her company :)

    Sublime

by jjwilde on 1/4/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

i saw her 2 nights in a row. Her birthday was 12.30 and she gave us a wonderful present "Boots of Spanish Leather" New Years Eve was filled with powerful renditions of among others, "Ain't it Strange" and "Dancin Barefoot." She ended with a new song from the title of her book "Just Kids" the whole thing was dotted with wise words about how to proceed with our lives in 2011. Be kind to one another, help each other out and agitate against the Tea Party that's trying to undermine our country. God Bless Patti Smith! My wish for this year is that I get to see her more often. She revitalizes my soul.

    Patti still rocks

by sevy on 1/3/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Patti smith played the bowery ballroom for 3 consecutive sold out nights. I was there the night before New Years eve which was also her birthday. She may not be 20 or 30 anymore but she still looks great and while some moments were low key- she was still plenty sassy. with some witty comments and she still really hit the better known songs with full fire in vocals. I also liked her body language with gestures during the songs. It was a great night. well worth it.

    Patti doesnt disappoint

by skikp on 12/31/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

I had never seen Patti Smith before and didn't know what to expect. I consider her to be a legend and wanted to make sure I saw her while she is still performing. It was a great show with songs from several albums and periods of her work. The Bowery Ballroom is a great, quaint place to see a show, unless they oversell. Here it was appropriately sold out. Early on she seemed to be in a good, joking mood. She joked that this night (the first of three) is normally like a rehearsal and she didn't know why anyone showed up. Several times she would chat in-between songs, either telling a quick story or interacting with the audience. She even read a passage from her book which led into a song. I am a fan of early Patti Smith and early on I wasn't sure she was going to provide the dark, brooding, punkish feel that I love. However, I was wrong, by the end of the show, the angst of her songs was palpable.

Patti stills rocks (as should we all!)

by Andycat on 2/24/10Park West - Chicago

Since I'm 60-plus I was one of the lucky ones to see Patti Smith at the same Park West venue 30 + years ago. She's my age - 1946 vintage - and she can still rock! Before the show started I sat w/my wife and listed the 10 songs I hoped she would play and she hit 8 of them and played 8 more others; who could be displeased? I missed the keyboards, but w/Lenny Kaye and Jay Dee Daugherty still aboard there was no loss of any musical excitement. But Patti is still the show, part chanteuse, part priestess, fully poet, and totally rock star. She bobbed and weaved and slinked and floated across the stage, leading us all in the some of the anthems we have never forgotten, and still draw meaning and inspiration from if we value our sanity. It's always thought to be corny to think that secular entertainment can give us a spiritual jolt, but Patti Smith has been a beacon of real connection to the quasi-divine in the physical world, never fearing to be blessed.

    Patti rocks!

by Zumakitty on 2/22/10Park West - Chicago

Traveled to Chicago to see a true rock and roll icon. Have been wanting to see Patti Smith for over thirty years. I can't even begin to say how thrilled I was. Was able to be up against the stage. The band played an amazing set, my son and his friend were with me. Patti approached us a few times and seemed to be happy with our enthusiasm. Patti and the band have great energy. I would recommend going anywhere to see them. The event was for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, and I believe it was a huge success. Kudos to the band for supporting a good cause.
