Cirque du Soleil: OVO on Tour
Talk about creating a buzz. Touring circus company Cirque du Soleil's OVO offers a nonstop, life-affirming, two-hour tribute to the infinitely diverse world of insects. This sensual, acrobatically dazzling show premiered in 2009 as the Montreal-based circus company's 25th production since 1984. The cast for its premiere included 54 performing artists from 16 different countries. Created and directed by Deborah Colker, OVO (Portuguese for "egg") contemplates insects in all their beauty, action and curiosity. Brazilian composer Berna Ceppas transforms their flight, leaps, creeping and crawling into a samba-influenced choreographic spectacle augmented by the constant flutter and hum of real insect sounds.
With well over a thousand performances to date, OVO long ago took flight as one of the Cirque's most popular and rewarding extravaganzas. As Albany, New York's Times Union said of OVO in 2020, "In our digital age, it's reassuring to remember that non-simulated, filter-free entertainment still has the power to dazzle and transport us."
What is Cirque du Soleil: OVO?
Upon its Montreal debut in 2009, OVO became Cirque du Soleil's most audacious and virtuosic new-circus show to date. A trio of principal characters — Master Flipo, Foreigner and Ladybug — keeps this arena spectacular in constant motion, as awestruck insects become intensely interested in a mysterious egg's sudden appearance. OVO teems with life, and Cirque du Soleil's talented cast mirrors the insect world's natural abilities to fly, balance and leap with a lifetime of practice and precision.
During one of the company's largest flying acts, 10 scarab beetles on three platforms toss a single beetle back and forth. A colorfully costumed dragonfly flits about, red ants juggle chunks of kiwi and corncobs with their feet, and butterflies cling gracefully to one another as they float through the air. For OVO's grand finale, the large span used for brilliant lighting effects transforms into a two-story climbing wall onto which trampoline-powered crickets are hurled as though onto a vertical stage. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and other insects serve as supporting characters throughout the evening's dozen acrobatic tours de force.
The show was absolutely fantastic! The performance was incredible. My family and I had a wonderful time.
Was hoping for more "wow"in this show. Last scene was the best. Good for families with younger children.
Characters were amazing .Show was as good as expected
I’ve seen quite a few Cirque du Soleil shows and as always this on was exciting and a lot of fun.
Truly amazing. The human body strength, dexterity, flexibility, grace, all demonstrated by world class athletes with bits of comedy built in.
I am not a big Cirque Du Soleil fan - have seen a few shows (Beatles, Michael Jackson) and enjoyed them but "not my cup of tea". The story line was a bit odd but the performances within the show were jaw-dropping. The athleticism was unbelievable and kept me on the edge of my seat (after a slow start)
1st half: 3.5/5 (qualified); last half: 5/5 (great); closing act (frog): 6/5 (soul-stirring!)
This was my 11th Cirque show and I must say it was not one of my favorite. It was ok and the outfits were AMAZING as always. The scenery was get. What made it meh, was the fact the acts were OK. I would rate it with Toruk. Both had more costumes and story line than actual acrobatic performances. I would see it again, but would be okay with the cheap seats.
Upbeat, light, happy. Just what we all needed! And of course jaw dropping as every cirque is! Will see it again!
What a great show, for both kids and adults alike. I will attend every time they come to town. Worth every penny!
I recently attended the Cirque du Soleil: OVO show with my daughter, and it was quite underwhelming. The performance lacked excitement, and my daughter was bored throughout. The acts were repetitive and the pacing was slow, making it hard to stay engaged. Overall, it didn't live up to our expectations. I hope the organizers improve the show for future audiences.
The Cirque du Soleil show was amazing. This was a birthday gift and the OVO was perfect for kids. All those who performed were incredible! Great time had by all.
So my family have been to a couple of these Shows and this is by far our favourite. Amazing Performance and story. Well put together I would pay to watch this again!
The acts & costumes were amazing! We went with our 4 & 6 year old granddaughters & they loved it!
I have never been to a cirque du soleil before. I won tickets at a work party and went to see the ovo show. It was amazing to see what those performers could do! It was incredible!
OVO was a spectacular experience! The talent, costumes, and performance were amazing!!
I got these tickets as a Christmas gift for my partner & sister in law!! We were transformed into children watching the magical creatures perform stunts and tell their love story!
Show was slow, although the acrobats were quite talented, the show moved very slowly, most of the skits were single acrobats, certainly not the energy I have seen in past Cirque performances
Innovative costuming. Nice variety of acts that showcase incredible athleticism. Enjoyed the music. Close enough to see performers who looked like they enjoyed it as well. What I didn't love: NOW Arena, particularly the floor seats. Barely padded folding chairs that were welded together? Ugh (hope the next Cirque is elsewhere). Long lines for the two restrooms that were open? (both genders) Ugh, plan ahead. Wildly overpriced snacks? Ugh, pass. I will give them credit for streamlining the entry process, though. That was nice.
We were not aware how steep the upper level. My wife had a bit of an anxiety issue. We sat in the back row and enjoyed the show. It was great, but my wife said we sitting on the ground floor next time.
