About

OTTMAR LIEBERT IN CONCERT:

Guitarist and  Zen monk Ottmar Liebert is a giant of new age music, beloved by fans around the world for his virtuosic brand of Spanish-influenced guitar instrumentals. His pared down live performances are a model of less-is-more, moving audiences with simple yet emotional arrangements that allow his talents to really shine. Fans at Liebert's 2013 shows were treated to a decidedly spiritual experience, building anticipation for his 2014 tour dates with his band Luna Negra.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Cologne, West Germany, Ottmar Liebert took up the guitar at age 11 and the flamenco guitar at 14. After several years playing rock music throughout Germany and the US, Liebert settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1989 and started the first incarnation of his band Luna Negra. Their 1990 debut LP Nouveau Flamenco marked a break with Liebert's rock past, instead exploring "new flamenco," a subgenre that featured traditional flamenco guitar alongside more contemporary pop elements. Over the next two decades, Liebert released more than 20 studio albums, five of which received Grammy nominations for Best New Age Album. The recipient of 38 Gold and Platinum certifications from the RIAA, Liebert is poised for even more success with two new albums slated for 2014.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"To describe Ottmar's performance as amazing would be an understatement. It was without a doubt...the evening of a lifetime. He plays with his heart and soul — you as the audience feel every chord that he strums."

"Ottmar Liebert was incredible. He played for an hour and a half and it was one of the best concerts I've been to. He played some new music, the new CD is fabulous. He played some old music, it was the perfect mix of songs. He is a humble and talented man."

"Spiritual and then some. His playlist was great and in some cases, I preferred the stage version over the studio version."

Music fantastic - Ottmar less so

by dagosgirl on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

I've been a fan of Ottmar Leibert for nearly 2 decades. Last night was my first opportunity to see him in concert. The music was great....Ottmar truly shines .... Luna Negra was awesome too and the dynamics between the 5 of them was fantastic. That said, there was ZERO personality on the stage and Ottmar acted as if he was doing us all a favor by playing. He didn't greet the audience verbally at all....no "hello" or "thanks for being here." The only time he addressed the audience was to introduce Luna Negra by name and to ask (twice) that we buy his wares at intermission and following the concert. That was strictly it. He didn't interact at all with the audience and it was a whole lot less than personal. In fact, it appeared he just wasn't having that much fun. He rarely smiled and when he did it was gone in a flash. Just before the start of the 2nd set a woman very close to the stage yelled "Marry me Ottmar!" It was funny....the audience laughed....and one member of Luna Negra laughed but Ottmar wouldn't even crack a smile. I've heard him interviewed on NPR twice in recent years. He was friendly with the interviewer and I enjoyed those interviews. However, last night he came across as very arrogant and full of himself. It appears he takes himself way too seriously. He had zero appreciation for the crowd. When it was over he simply got up and walked off stage. No "thank you for coming." No "see you again in a couple of years." No nothing. Of course, I still love his music....but I have no desire to buy any more CDs or to see him in concert again. It just really turned me off. several people sitting around me had the same opinion. We talked about it once the concert was over and we were a waiting the crowd to thin so we could leave.

    A evening with Ottmar

by Esmee on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

I have to admit that I did not know who Ottmar Liebert was until I received an email either through ticketmaster or the Empire Theatre. I Googled his name and came across his personal website. I was able to preview some of his music and loved it. I quickly bought tickets online and got lucky with 2 seats in the 8th row. The music was absolutely incredible. I appreciated the mastery of the instruments each musician played. I am definitely a new fan of Ottmar and plan to buy more of this CD's. I do feel that there could have been more staff at the bar. The lines were long and slow moving (for the intermission time that was given).

    Loved the experience!

by Zaninana on 8/10/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

The music was beautiful, inspirational and quality of the acoustics in the House of Blues was outstanding. Didn't purchase the tickets soon enough, so, all the tickets I could find were general admission and we had to stand. I thought, no problem, I'll be on my feet dancing the whole evening! I'm an older fan and overestimated my stamina. Couldn't stand through the whole show so when I went outside to sit for a minute and rest my feet, I wasn't allowed back in :( !!

    Retire from stage Ottmar.

by ConcertCuisine on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

The overall talent is BEYOND DESCRIPTION. The acoustical guitar player on stage with Ottmar should be the star attraction. He plays with passion as his body keeps rhythm showing his feeling for the Spanish guitar. Accoustical and drums drowned out the guitars so much of time. I came to HEAR Spanish Guitar! Oattmar, though extremely talented, lacks stage presence. To fully entertain, a performer must connect with his audience. He did not accomplish that last night.

    Absolutely unbelieveable!!!

by DKBearden on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

The music was outstanding! It was the best concert I have been to. I absolutely loved it. Once upon a time two people went to New Mexico as friends, while listening to Ottmar's beautiful music over and over and spending time with this person; I fell in love with him. I know that the music was a big part of the romantic setting for us and we both loved listening to it. He came with me tonight and it has brought back many memories for me that I know will last a lifetime.

    Ottmar's Outstanding!

by Oldmexwoman on 8/10/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

As always, Ottmar Liebert and Company presented an amazing performance in Houston, Texas. The intimate setting was great, the music wonderful and Ottmar truly makes the audience feel his music. If he comes to Texas, I try to get there! Thanks for bringing Ottmar to Houston so that we can connect and enjoy his amazing talents.

Fantastic, that's all I can say

by jazzyLiz on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

You can buy a CD and listen to the music all you can, but enjoying a live concert, seeing it in person, and hearing acoustically what doesn't come across through whatever sound system you have is aesthetically perfect at the Majestic. Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra was simply Fantastic!

    Ottmar Leibert & Luna Negra

by Krooozer on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San Antonio

Ottmar was great. He and all of the Luna Negra members are very talented artists. I had heard their music on CD but there is nothing to compare to a live performance. A very enjoyable evening!

    Good Concert, Poor Venue

by ChicoDillon on 8/9/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

I enjoyed the Ottmar Liebert concert musically. The 1st set was good but the second set was outstanding. What disappointed me was the venue. I paid for seating in the floor area in front of the stage. The seating was cramped and the seats themselves were folding chairs, very uncomfortable. Add those two factors to a poorly working air conditioning systems and it was not the most pleasant of conditions. Additionally, there was a constant hum of noise, voices and other distractions that the musicians may or may not have been aware of, but I was, and found it very distracting. Evidently, the House of Blues sold a number of SRO tickets and the area where those people were is where most of the noise and talking seemed to be coming from. For those folks, it was just a night at the bar with the local band playing and they had come there to socialize. In the final analysis, I will pay to see Ottmar again but would much rather see him in the Verizon or some other venue that is less like a honky-tonk. In the old days if I wanted to honky-tonk, there was always the Esquire Ballroom.

Ottmar Liebert at House of Blues

by Pdoubleu on 8/9/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

Ottmar was awesome. Clean, crisp sound; just awesome. I love the House Blues venue, but there were too many people talking and laughing in the SRO areas during this show. The sound guys tried to crank up the sound during the 2nd portion of the show (which I really appreciated), but the party crowd should have went to Pete's Dueling Piano Bar instead of this concert. It wasn't limited to the standing room only group though. A guy in front of us wouldn't stop talking to his date, which I don't really fault him. However, he could have whispered (he was disturbing everyone around him). It would have given him an opportunity to get close to her and allowed us to give Ottmar proper attention. Overall, the concert was great and I will be back to the House of Blues for another concert (and can not wait). One last thing; we love the seats on the floor level.

Ottmar was FANTASTIC! House of Blues, not so much.

by LadySamantha347 on 8/9/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

The MUSIC was wonderful and I plan on going to see him again. I will not be returning to The House Of Blues. It was HOT, the seats were on a level way below the stage and placed to extend past a wall. You could not really see very well. There was a door that was "for Employee's Only" that was right in front of our seats. Any time someone came out of there or went in a light shined into our eyes. It was EXTREMELY disruptive. There is also a bar area in the back, it was VERY noisy, so, there was background noise through out the concert. People were "shushing" the people in the bar...it was BAD. Ottmar's music is Terrific and the voices and noise was RUDE. No more House of Blues for me or my friends!

    Blissed Out to Ottmar Liebert

by TheTooleMan on 8/9/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra were perfect. They played gorgeously. While it was hard for me to distinguish one song from another, the music created a mood that left me feeling peaceful and relaxed.

    Ottmar was Wonderful!

by Kyrar on 8/9/09House of Blues Houston - Houston

The show was great! Ottmar and Luna Negra put on a great show! I did not like the SRO part of the venue though and will never do that again. People talked the whole time...loud..., people invaded my personal space..bumping me with purses, etc. The sound system at the House of Blues in Houston is WONDERFUL!!! No matter where you are seated (or standing), it sounds good, and the sound is equally disbursed throughout the building. Overall, I would see Ottmar Leibert again, and am listening to him while typing this. I like to belly dance to some of his music, but will not do a standing room only!! His live performance sounded as good as it does on the cd. The sound quality was phenom! He played for an hour, took a break and came back and played for another hour.

    Mesmerizing!

by Ruby2882 on 8/8/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

The stage set up at HOB was perfect for this show. There was lots of up front floor seating which put all the noisy, standup folks in the back. There were no distractions between me and the stage and the group did not disappoint. Every member is truely a master of their instrument. The live sound was better than any recording. By the end of the show I was mesmerized.

    Ottmar

by mep11 on 8/6/09House of Blues Dallas - Dallas

Absolutely Awesome!! Except for the idiots in the back that obviously bought the tickects because they happen to be in the area or on business and just wanted to go to a concert and didnt have a clue who the artist was. I actually enjoyed his first set more than the second but both were more than i expected. Awesome!!
