Music fantastic - Ottmar less so
by dagosgirl on 8/10/09Majestic Theatre San Antonio - San AntonioI've been a fan of Ottmar Leibert for nearly 2 decades. Last night was my first opportunity to see him in concert. The music was great....Ottmar truly shines .... Luna Negra was awesome too and the dynamics between the 5 of them was fantastic. That said, there was ZERO personality on the stage and Ottmar acted as if he was doing us all a favor by playing. He didn't greet the audience verbally at all....no "hello" or "thanks for being here." The only time he addressed the audience was to introduce Luna Negra by name and to ask (twice) that we buy his wares at intermission and following the concert. That was strictly it. He didn't interact at all with the audience and it was a whole lot less than personal. In fact, it appeared he just wasn't having that much fun. He rarely smiled and when he did it was gone in a flash. Just before the start of the 2nd set a woman very close to the stage yelled "Marry me Ottmar!" It was funny....the audience laughed....and one member of Luna Negra laughed but Ottmar wouldn't even crack a smile. I've heard him interviewed on NPR twice in recent years. He was friendly with the interviewer and I enjoyed those interviews. However, last night he came across as very arrogant and full of himself. It appears he takes himself way too seriously. He had zero appreciation for the crowd. When it was over he simply got up and walked off stage. No "thank you for coming." No "see you again in a couple of years." No nothing. Of course, I still love his music....but I have no desire to buy any more CDs or to see him in concert again. It just really turned me off. several people sitting around me had the same opinion. We talked about it once the concert was over and we were a waiting the crowd to thin so we could leave.
