OPETH IN CONCERT:

Swedish progressive metal rockers Opeth are all about keeping listeners on their toes. The band's technically virtuosic jams are a study in contrast, juxtaposing brutal guitar riffing with soft acoustic passages and blood-curdling death growls with melodic choruses. Their live shows play up these opposing elements perfectly, hitting fans with a maelstrom of moods and textures that run the gamut from heart-pounding to serene. At the center of it all is frontman Mikael Akerfeldt, a magnetic performer whose dynamic voice and wild-eyed intensity is the driving force behind ambitious compositions like "Sorceress" and "Will O The Wisp." He's joined on stage by a motley crew of shredders who keep the energy cranked to the max on guitar, bass, drums, and Mellotron – a unique keyboard instrument that lends an eerie, otherworldly vibe to the band's songs. Metal fans looking to have their minds blown continue to turn out in droves to see Opeth play, and they're never disappointed by the band's hard-hitting, adventurous sounds.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Opeth formed in Stockholm in 1990 and spent their early years playing a straight-ahead brand of death metal featuring blast beats and aggressive vocals. By mid-decade the band had begun incorporating elements of jazz, blues, and even classical, and their 1995 debut album Orchid was roundly hailed by critics for its unique blend of styles. The band released three more albums in the '90s but didn't start touring until the release of 2001's Blackwater Park. That album sold nearly 100,000 copies in the US alone, a major feat that drew the band out on their first world tour. By the end of the '00s Opeth was a fixture on the Swedish charts, and American audiences weren't far behind – both 2011's Heritage and 2014's Pale Communion cracked the Top 20 on the US Billboard 200. The band released their 12th studio album Sorceress to another round of critical acclaim in 2016, and followed up with more face-melting sets on their Sorceress World Tour.

They’re just amazingly perfect. Everything, absolutely everything was on the top of me expectations. They’re one of the best band you will see perform, ever! And what to say about Mikael’s voice!?! He’s a god!!

    Oh, Palladium....

by Steve on 12/5/21Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Every time I come to the Palladium, I leave feeling sad and promising that I won't do this to myself anymore. My three principle gripes are: 1) Sound: It seems like unless you find a very specific spot on the floor (which varies depending on how close to full the place), sound quality varies from "muddy" to "I can only hear the bass with any semblance of recognition". Somehow, for this concert specifically, the audio quality for "The Drapery Falls" leaned more towards muddy whereas the next song, "Windowpane", was totally washed out and just sounded like noise to me. It was *very* disappointing. 2) People: It felt like the venue was sold out, which is fine in theory, but the main area had almost no ventilation.. it was extremely warm -- uncomfortably so. On top of that, there didn't seem to be any real venue control to keep people in masks at all times unless drinking. Many times, I saw security / venue staff walking by and nodding towards those without masks on. I get you can't catch them all, but it felt pretty blatantly ignored in spite of the signs outside saying it was required. 3) Parking: I used to be able to park on the premises day of the concert without having to pre-pay or do anything, but that has evidently recently changed. I'm not sure what the rules are to get parking on-site now, but that added about 10 minutes to my just getting inside having to figure out where was nearby to park at a not too unreasonable price. The change was inconvenient and just one more thing to annoy me about having to drive to Hollywood from Orange County. All in all, every experience is disappointing in the macro, and this experience -- really my second or third concert since artists started touring again -- has continued to sour me on returning to the Palladium, even when it is the only game in town to see bands who don't have stops in OC. I may just start going down to their San Diego stops if the alternative is coming here.

    Opeth transcends

by Viva on 12/4/21Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Zeal and Ardor was amazing. I enjoyed Blood and thunder by Mastadon. The crowning jewel was really Opeth as they are extremely talented such a joy to watch! The venue itself was clean, had good sanitation implementation and the bathrooms were in good shape. The merchandise table had good selections! Overall seeing this show was pleasant, epic and just glorious!

    Just glad to be there

by Daj on 12/4/21Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

After 2 years of dealing with the plague, it was nice to be back at a live show. I got butterflies leading up to it which is something I haven’t felt in a long time. Had to remember proper show etiquette once I was there but it all came back fast. Everyone was surprisingly really nice and chill, it almost didn’t feel like a metal show. The performance itself was incredible. Both bands killed it, the projector and laser-beams blew my mind and the atmosphere made me feel like I had died and entered Valhalla’s welcoming gates. Not much more to say other than I had a really good time. Thanks

Great concert by 2 great bands!

by Curbfeeler on 12/4/21Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Opeth’s musicianship was amazing and Mastodon was on fire! Hollywood Palladium sounded really good (excellent sound engineers!) and the staff was stern but professional. The crowd was so courteous and respectful to each other, I thought I was at a classical music concert, j/k :-) It felt like we were all together again, a subculture family of music genre that goes beyond just heavy music. These 2 bands in this medium venue was a thrill and unforgettable, rare sighting when they can easily fill stadiums. $40 t-shirts were a bit gouging but the $50 tickets and starting at 6pm on a weeknight, who ever designed this event, you are a genius, I got home before midnight, thank you!

Couldn’t even stay - no masks

by L card on 12/4/21Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

I was really looking forward to this one, but I just couldn’t stick around and feel comfortable. 4000 people jam packed in there, not a mask to be seen.

    Fantastic

by Jos on 11/29/21Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

This was the first show that I’ve ever been to and it was stellar. I never heard of the first band, Zeal and Ador, however they were a surprise as they mixed elements of soul, death metal, black metal and some nice drumming as well. Mastodon (the second act) was fantastic with great imagery and phenomenal playing from guitarist Brent Hinds. The last act was Opeth and for me personally was the best out of the three (as Opeth is one of my favorite artists ever). The drummer they had for the tour was great in filling in the shoes of a powerhouse of a drummer that was Martin Axenrot, Frederick was a fantastic player as well as Mikael Akerfeldt who combined beautiful singing voice with demonic growls, Martin Mendez was also a great bassist and Joakim was great with his keyboard textures as well. Overall a 5 star show today and all three bands were fantastic.

    Prog Meets The Brann

by Louis2112 on 11/29/21Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

Mastodon was the “Brann” led by Brann Dailor; drummer. The heaviness of Mastodon brought the muscle. Riffs from Hinds and Kelliher fit right into a pocket with Troy’s bass. New songs from new LP, “Hushed and Grim” had more muscle played live. Fantastic visuals heightened the experience from Mastodon songs. Opeth closed the show with Prog Metal meets Swedish Death Metal. Mikael Akerfeld opened the show singing in Swedish, “Heart In Hand”. Opeth delved into songs from their past catalog, especially from their Magnus Opus, “Blackwater Park”. They then filled in the middle from Pale Communion, Heritage, and Sorceress. Fantastic visuals added to the music. Opeth ended their set with, “Blackwater Park”. BP is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a reissue, remaster. Zeal and Ador opened the show. Waiting to see this show? Don’t! Must show. Fantastic Musicianship.

Musical prowess, yes, duration - could have been longer

by Musical~Duet on 11/27/21The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

As a drummer, I'm missing Martin Axenrot big time. Don't get me wrong, Sami Karppinen is a highly accomplished drummer and def. stepped up to the plate to fit the bill, which he did much to my amazement- I was very impressed as he had some HUGE shoes to fill on short notice (I certainly couldn't have done it)! However, I do know most of the drum parts intimately on most of Opeth's songs, even if I can't play them like Axe (don't I wish - I'll blame it on my day job). As a drummer, I still know all of his parts, and Sami just didn't replicate Axe's parts. Kinda disappointing as I got the news literally 3 days prior to the show that Martin was NOT going to be in the lineup. Major disappointment. Figures. Mastodon did NOT Disappoint one iota! They also played for well over an hour- huge set... I only wish Opted had followed suit. Their set was too short in my humble opinion.

    Unbelivable Venue, Unbelievable Concert

by Chas on 11/25/21Boch Center Wang Theatre - Boston

Never thought I would watch a death metal concert in a venue that was entirely seated. However, at my age it was a welcome experience. Cannot describe how absolutely beautiful Boch Theater is. Every aspect of this facility is akin to visiting the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. Entry was easy- showed our vax card and ID, and were ushered in quickly. Plenty of vendors, though the choices seemed to be limited to beer, chips and candy. Seating was in the mezzanine, which provided us with an excellent view, save for one particular spotlight that was annoying for a short period of time until it was either moved or turned off. Sound was absolutely spot on- not too loud, crisp, clean. Egress from the facility was easy and uncomplicated.

by AD on 11/22/21The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Great show. But parking sucked, not Familiar with the area so I was unable to find a parking garage it was supposed to be right next-door but wasn’t had to drive around and missed a half hour of the show The website ticketmaster and for the Palace theater didn’t have any clear directions or GPS address for the actual theater or for parking. The 3 Mastodon songs I saw were great though

Who starts the music right when doors open

by lo on 11/22/21The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Went solely for Zeal & Ardor, the opening band. Drove 3+ hrs from Rochester, and everything stated doors were at 7:00 pm. Made it into the venue at 7:30 after finding parking and Z&A had already finished. Opeth and Mastodon did amazing but not happy with missing the band I went to see.
