The Symphony was very good as well as the cast and chorus.I was offended by some of the production scenes and remarks by Ms. Dye. You have lost me as a customer.

    Madama Butterfly was outstanding!

    by red1234gret on 10/1/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

The production was fabulous from the set to the costumes and the staging. All the singers were excellent but the Butterfly took down the house with her projection and lyrical quality. Opera Columbus continues to provide emerging talent with the opportunity to succeed, and this production was a fine example of combining with the Ohio School of Dance, Columbus Symphony, and the Julliard School.

    Cheers!

by Arepo on 10/1/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

How refreshing to see this opera performed with such sensitivity to the humanity of its characters! Brilliant use of the revolving set and its screens. Poignant ending with Suzuki's protection of the child. Among the best of the Butterflys.

Most Innovative Staging Ever for Madama B

by slickrickgaga on 10/1/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

From the initial entrance to final curtain the staging broke all tne rules. Color and racial boundaries were gone. Boys became girls. Dancing replaced pantomime and an entirely new scene was added to much effect. The highlight was an extended rain of Sakura cherry blossoms on stage. The choir sang next to the audience and the Columbus Symphony orchestra was in the pit under masterful direction. There were even two signers for the deaf even though there were supertitles on the top Curtain. All the lead roles were powererfully sung and acted melodramatically to move some in the audience to tears. I cannot proffer more praise on this small company and wish Columbus denizens would trade their Buckeye tickets for Boffo ones!

    Innovating

by DocLeslie on 4/27/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

This is my second opera I've ever seen. It was great! Original. Different. Used a lot of different "mediums"....not sure if that was the correct word. The choir was video'd on stage along ribbons. There was an aerialist.

Risky new approach has pros and cons

by RainMain on 4/23/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

The singing, digital stage effects, and virtual participants were awesome. I thought the burlesque aspect would be interesting and creative, but it went a little too far and I felt like I was at a strip show. My daughter, a musician and artist, was very uncomfortable with the stripshow feel, and felt the instrumentals with the synthesizer were not necessarily well placed. You can make opera sexy without making it a sex show. My daughter disliked it so much she asked to leave at intermission.

    It was OK I gues...

by Anonymous on 4/23/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

This was my first opera, and I didn't really know what to expect aside from what is shown briefly in the movies. I have a few issues with this particular opera. Firstly, the story line was very brief and left out a ton of details that would have made the story much more interesting. The show was basically a summary of the what I imagine the story should be or could have been. Secondly, the dancing was off somehow. Either the choreography was just awkward or they brought out the backup team of the backup team. I understand what they were trying to convey with the dance routines but it was chunky and didn't flow well. Lastly, the set didn't change. I can't say if this is normal for an opera to have the same set throughout the show but the physical set did not change. Lighting and videos were projected and those things changed but only slightly. Other than that, the singing was phenomenal! I have never heard a man sing in falsetto that well and for that length of time. I was very impressed. And they have a lady singing while moving about and upside down holding herself up on a big ring. Also, very impressive. The virtual chorus was an interesting idea and I feel that could be used very well in operas in the future; however, when will the lead be a virtual singer? Why not just make it into a movie? I think I would prefer it to be all live. One more thing, they included an electric guitar into the band. This added a degree of touching your emotion that a standard band wouldn't be able to do. Quite cool to experience that.

A compelling performance of a Britten masterpiece

by Europianist on 10/4/17Southern Theatre - Columbus

Benjamin Britten's "The Turn of the Screw", in its tonal language probably more challenging than the similarly dark "Peter Grimes", received a fine performance by Opera Columbus on Sunday. The libretto, written by Myfanwy Piper based on the novella by Henry James, seemed to wordy, almost garrulous, in comparison to Henry James' masterpiece novella on which it is based. It tries to explain and elaborate too much where the dark, oppressive atmosphere and the impenetrable mystery are much better conveyed in the stark and austere writing of the original. The music, however, is rich and colorful, its very avant garde material interspersed with nursery tunes, and shows Britten's assured mastery and mature genius as a composer. The soloists ranged mostly from very good to exceptional; standouts were Felicia Moore (Mrs. Grose), Emalie Savoy (Miss Jessell) and Miles Mykkanen (Peter Quint), the latter also portraining the Prologue and simultaneously appearing to stand in for the absent uncle/guardian, a directorial choice not immediately plausible to me. Liam McCarthy's pure and pretty voice did not quite resonate or project enough to successfully carry the important part of Miles, the young boy, although he delivered the treacherous vocal lines with commendable accuracy and tuning. The very challenging instrumental score was played admirably and expressively by fourteen soloists from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

    Homegrown a better choice

by KnitKnot on 10/4/17Southern Theatre - Columbus

This production of Turn of the Screw was okay, but far from inspired or moving, as opera should be. The singers were all good, but the performance lacked vision. Lighting was quite good, but flawed. Costumes and set were nondescript. The pit orchestra was good. Just because the direcctors and most of the singers came from NYC, the audience was not treated to a night at the Met... Columbus has equally good local talent who should have the opportunity to perform in local venues. No need to bring in an overprpiced crew from NYC

    Spectacular Show

by FanofOperaColumbus on 9/30/17Southern Theatre - Columbus

Loved watching this incredibly talented cast! Especially enjoyed seeing and hearing young Liam McCarthy, who played the role of Miles! Britten's music is not easy but he made it sound like it was a walk in the park!

Don't taint a classic like Carmen...

    by alex4kiss on 5/8/17Southern Theatre - Columbus

The people behind this production were more interested in making their point than delivering Carmen to the audience. The way they modified this ageless Opera was offensive at times. Several exceptional individual performances were drowned out by the distraction of a botched presentation of an otherwise flawless story.
