The Tales of Hoffmann was a great success!

by jdesigns77 on 11/14/09Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The Tales of Hoffmann was quite an enjoyable performance. Being that this was the first opera I've been to, this show proved me wrong about the boring stereotypes given to operas. This performance was far from boring. The tales of Hoffmann has an amazing group of performers, the stage settings created a sort of surrealistic fantasy, and I especially enjoyed the satyr. I believe this opera is a great show for all types of viewers!

    Mixed feelings

by Ummmmmm on 11/14/09Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The sets and directing were very good. The singing was first rate. The storyline was not my cup of tea, but that's just me. Was also distracted and offended by the overpowering and nauseating smell of garlic wafting from the the couple sitting next to us.

    Tales of Hoffman

by Bunia on 11/14/09Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

I have been to the opera at the Met in NY, the Lyric in Chicago, and the San Francisco Opera and I have never heard such wonderful acoustics as at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. This was my first Denver Opera and I was very pleasantly surprised.

The plot is a little complicated if you have no prior experience with the story. I enjoyed the show.

Act one was played with a great deal of whimsy and the robot costume was outstanding.

This accessible opera was both a dramatic and vocal achivement with outstanding cohesive perfomances. This opera is a perfect balance of humor, emotional upheaval, beautiful music and song.

The show was fabulous! The first act was hilarious, the second was sad, and the third act was back to being funny and entertaining.

    Tales of Hoffmann

by SunshineD1 on 11/11/09Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

Tales of Hoffmann was a wonderfully humorous tale of "love is blind". Love the costumes!!!!! This was my first time in the theater with these seats and the only negative to the evening is that for me the seats are extremely uncomfortable which then at times made the opera not quite as enjoyable. I absolutely love the digital translation and the music and voices erupt throughout the theater filling your ears with the melodious sounds. Great job!!!!

Very funny first act - almost fell out of seat. Second act more serious. But overall a great night.

    The Best Yet...

by OperaGuy on 11/8/09Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

The is one of the best productions Opera Colorado has done... Everything just worked together. The sets, the lighting... and of course The artists, heading the cast was Julian Gavin who gave a strong performance as Hoffmann, Katherine Rohrer sang well as The Muse/Nicklaussse and was very expressive. The highlight of the evening for me was the stellar performance by Pamela Armstrong, who performed all 4 roles flawlessly. She was able to move from role to role with effort and grace. Her Olympia vocally breathtaking and convincing as the automaton come to life. This alone is worth seeing and hearing the show for. The other artists were in good form dealing well with demanding stage direction demands... and dare I mention the "nude" scene? The OC chorus was prepared by John Baril and rose to the challenge of some difficult staging moves and unusual costume changes. The chorus sang well and pulled the whole production together. The Colorado Symphony performed admirably, bring new energy and life to Offenbach's music. One curious note - there was some unexplained "noise" that emanated from the pit and I was told that was from the conductor, who is French, perhaps that explains it.

    Tales of Hoffmann

by sisugirl on 11/8/09Ellie Caulkins Opera House - Denver

If you love the symphony, you will love opera. This was my first time and what a visual feast! I got to see and hear the orchestra, plus a play with beautiful choral music.... i thought it would be the typical opera music that we associate with operas but it was so much more! And to top it all off, having the translation on the seatback in front of you was so awesome! i LOVED being able to follow the story....that was a big concern...paying to see something and not knowing the story or what was really going on..... it was an amazing story. The costuming was fantastic. I took my daughter as a birthday present (she is 26) and we had a blast! We will be back and next time we will arrive early to hear the lecture and learn more about our new found passion!
