  • Oliver

Very enjoyable with some very excellent performances. Hugh Panaro was delightful as Fagin. What a joy to be able to see him in Philadelphia. The supporting cast was very good too, especially Janine Devito (Nancy), Scott Greer (Mr. Bumble) and Mary Martello (Mrs. Corney). The little boy that played the Artful Dodger when I saw it (I think it was RJ Fattori) was terrific. The boy who played Oliver, not so much. Don't hesitate to see another fine effort from the Walnut.

  • Fabulous show-great music!

by VANLOVE on 12/13/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Kudos to the cast and crew of Oliver!!!! This musical is great for people of all ages and if you love Dickens this is a must see! The settings and props were incredible and really helped to create that mysterious, dark Dickensian mood! I especially enjoyed the actor that played Fagin (Hugh Panaro)--he was truly top-notch in his lines, his mannerisms, and his singing and I look forward to seeing him in many more stage productions. The actress that played Nancy (Janine Divita) played the part to perfection and had an absolutely crisp, beautiful voice that resonated with the audience. The Artful Dodger (RJ Fattori) was also amazing--I was truly impressed with all the children and how easily they were able to take on the roles. I expect we will be seeing more of these youngsters in years to come! If you would like to be transported (for a few hours) to a bygone era--go and experience OLIVER for yourself!!

Very good show! The kids were great. The boy who played Oliver was adorable and a great actor for such a young kid. Hugh Panaro as Fagin was the most enjoyable part of the show. He is a great actor and has a voice that could melt butter, even though this part in my opinion did not fully utilize his vocal talent. All other supporting roles were good, and they even had a live dog in the show which I found distracting only because I am an animal lover and couldn't take my eyes off the dog when he was on stage! A fun night and enjoyable show.

Overall, good production. Oliver was a weak character in voice and dance. Really enjoyed Nancy and Fagin.

  • Consider Yourself Going to this Show!

If you want to feel great and see wonderful talent, come see this show. There are a lot of clever and elaborate set changes, and sometimes the dog steals the show!

  • Great Production

by Yardley on 12/7/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

Great production. Artful Doger, Fagan, Nancy, Bill and little Oliver, all gave solid performances. Great sets. "Consider Yourself at Home" was an unforgetabble number.

  • Oliver was spectacular!!!!!

by formeractress on 12/6/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

"Oliver" is a must-see production! All of the lead characters were amazing, however, I'd like to extend extra compliments to the following performers: Noah Claypole = TERRIFIC! A small role made BIG by fantastic acting - Bravo! Fagin = A great role made even greater by a thoughtful and tender interpretation. You could forgive his unscrupulous behavior...beautifully layered acting!!!!!!!! Bravo! Nancy = "As Long As He Needs Me" will give you goose bumps - agonizing and lovely at the same time! The staging of "Oom Pah Pah" was amazing! Bravo! The Artful Dodger = Another great role! This young man is bursting with talent - his joyful performance will make you want to join in with him! Bravo! All of the ensemble scenes were fabulous, as well! Cudos to all! The following comment has nothing to do with the performance, but with the audience: PLEASE, DO NOT STAND UP TO PUT ON YOUR COATS AND LEAVE THE THEATER UNTIL CURTAIN CALLS ARE OVER! I was shocked and dismayed when this happened last night - not only is it rude behavior with regard to the actors, but it is rude with regard to others in the audience who would like to participate in the appreciation of the production!

by Sablor on 12/4/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was truly an amazing show done by an amazing cast. Walnut Street Theater never fails to provide excellent plays. Loved Oliver, Cats and Hairspray. What a wonderful evening spent with my daughter who loved it just as much as I did. We couldn't stop talking about it all the way home. Wonderful. Would recommend everybody see it.

  • Oliver! @ WST

by Rustyroxann on 11/30/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

This was our first experience at WST....WOW! First of all - that is the absolutely cleanest theater I've ever been in...a small but very noticeable circumstance that jumped out at me. Secondly-Oliver! was very good...next time I hope to order seats closer than RowQ...yes it's still a good place to see a play - but my eyes aren't what they use to be - so closer would definitely improve the overall experience. The orchestra - a delight if oerfection....MADE THE PLAY..... The SETS, LIGHTING, COSTUMES ALL SO SPLENDID....THE SETS THEMSELVES RIVETING and INGENIOUS.

  • Great Fagin, uneven production

by chillyfilly on 11/28/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

Fans of 'Oliver will enjoy this production, which has quite a few flaws. The acting is mostly too broad or non-existent, the transitions from songs to dialogue and vice versa are choppy, the singers have trouble with their highnotes, and the dancing is amateurish. Despite all of these problems, the show is energetic and lively. Hugh Pannaro is amazing as the Jewish fence Fagin. He manages to convey the character's cockney accent as well as his ethnicity in a well crafted cadence. His dancing is really the best in the show, and he has a nice rapport with the children in the cast, who are either hams or wooden. The exception was the weekend "Artful Dodger,' who was pretty solid. The other standout performance was that of "Bill Sykes," who was properly menacing and scary thoughout his brief time on stage.

The show was wonderful and I highly recommend. Good for all ages except the very young who may be froghtened by some of the scenes and themes. Musicians performed the excellent score with gusto!

  • Oliver was well worth going!

by AEJAH on 11/25/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I found the even an excellent experience! The play was exciting, full of good music & action, keeping one's attention and interest throughout the performance. The boy who played Oliver was superb as well as the rest of the cast. Especially noteworthy were all the children in the cast! they exhibited a good command of presence before the audience and knew their parts well and presented themselves as very excited and interested in the performance without showing any signs of fatigue or disinterest. A well done job by all! Thank you!

My wife and I loved it!! We sat next to a nervous mother of a cast member. Her son was Oliver. He was amazing. She should be very proud. The entire cast was great!!

  • GREAT!

    by TheatreLover2 on 11/23/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

This was a great performance! Every enjoyable! The actors portrayed their characters’ in a very believing way. But my wife and I agreed that the boy who played The Dodger was the best actor in this presentation. (Kids always steal the show.)
