  • Oliver! made me "want more"

by Anonymous on 12/31/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Every time I visit the Walnut Street Theater, I am absolutely blown away by the level professionalism of every aspect of the performance. The costumes and beautifully, realistically crafted sets of Oliver! superbly complimented the entire cast. The leading roles were all wonderfully, wonderfully in character as well. Fagin's hilarious antics and tricks brought the house down, Nancy's "As Long as He needs Me" was a beautiful combination of toughness and grace, the pompous and bumbling Mr. Bumble was a perfect clown, and I am sure there was not a single person in the audience that did not want to run up to little Oliver and hug him tight after "Where is Love?" The youth ensemble of orphan boys and girls were also surprisingly fantastic and enthusiastic throughout the show as Fagin's army of pick pockets. They were wonderful to watch as well as to listen to. My only negativity was that the Artful Dodger could have been a tad bit more tougher since he is the second in command under Fagin and all the littler ones are looking up to him as well as Oliver. But the rest of the boys were fantastic and professionally adorable. Overall, an extremely entertaining, heart warming production that I highly recommend for anyone who is a theater lover like me or who likes a good story with spectacular singing, dancing and characters that will surley bring a smile to their face.

  • Oliver

The show was entertaining, however the story was not primarily about Oliver. The advertisement implying a "FAMILY MUSICAL" was misleading. There were many sexual overtones and a general lack of explaining in dialogue of main premise of the theme. It was not necessarily a family show. As an adult I enjoyed it, however we had to explain much to the children. The theater is very cramped as well. It was difficult with all of the children there.

My family and I had a wonderful time last night - the set was phenomenal, the cast was SUPERB. We are so thankful that we included this as part of our Christmas celebrations and hope to be back SOON. Thank you, Walnut Street Theatre!

  • Wonderful Afternoon Out

I took my niece, 8 yrs. old, and nephew, 17 yrs. old, to the matinee and it was splendid. The actors who play Nancy and Fagin respectively are top notch. In addition, how could one not like the oldest theatre in the U.S.

  • Oliver was simply wonderful!

From our seats which were very close to the stage we saw a thoroughly enjoyable and well presented musical which was equal in quality to many Broadway productions we have attended. Hugh Panaro, as Fagin, was absolutely perfect in his portrayal. When he spoke to the audience at the end about contributing money in his real voice the difference was incredible. Another highlight was Janine Divita as Nancy. We were impressed by her beautiful singing voice and her command of the character. The children were adorable, especially Brandon O'Rourke as Dodger. The sets and costumes were excellent. I would recommend this production to anyone who appreciates good theater.

  • heartwarming Oliver!

Charming. Heartwarming. Perfect for the holidays. All the music was respectfully performed by the actors and the musicians. Fagin was extraordinary and played with verve and panache. He really cared for the children--in a world perhaps where no one cared for them. One really gets the feeling that Dickens would not have minded at all.

  • Oliver - quite entertaining!

A very good production. I must say that the Artful Dodger was very good, but Oliver was a bit weak. The configuration of the seats is such that if you are in the upper level you will not be able to see that which occurs @ the edge of the stage unless you you get out of your seat.

Our family of five went to the show midweek. Our three sons had never been to a musical in Philadelphia before so it was a first for them. Two are teenagers, age 17 and 16 and they enjoyed it the most. Our 10 year old became too sleepy to enjoy it. The music was upbeat and the lead characters were excellent. We all enjoyed Oliver, Fagin and Mr. Bumble. My favorite actor was Nancy. I thought her voice was outstanding and so was her acting performance. I also really enjoyed one of the ensemble men, the one who did the excellent gymnastic feats. He was a great dancer. The climax was very exciting and well-performed. It really captured the audiences attention at the end of the night. The costumes, the music, the upbeat actors, everything was great entertainment! I was pleased that my older two really enjoyed the show. They had a great first experience with theater and hopefully will return for another show.

This production of Oliver was great! Sets were impressive. Hugh Panaro took the character of Fagin to a new level. He is amazing and I would go see any show that he was in! Janine DeVita also gave a wonderful performance of Nancy. Great show-looking forward to Fiddler!

  • Fagin stole the show!

by Anonymous on 12/29/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was very good. Sets were right on que. Hugh Panaro as Fagin ( not surprisingly stole the show). Took my kids 14 yrs and 7. Both enjoyed the performance.

  • Oliver was a little disappointing!!

    by Andrea1973 on 12/29/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I did enjoy the show don't get me wrong, but the violence I thought was a shock because of the fact there are children involved in this show and are in the audience and to see a man beating on a woman and then eventually killing her as part of the show was I thought a complete and total disgrace! Teaching children at that young age that it is okay to beat on a woman and kill her......I am sure I am not the only one who felt that way!! But all in all the show was good. The singing was amazing! The lead singer playing as Oliver, could have been a little better for having a lead role, however, I did enjoy the show.

Child actors were amateurish, carried by the adults. Theatre is warm and friendly

  • OLIVER AMAZING!

    by rosebud2561 on 12/28/09Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

The roles of Oliver (Sam Preston) and Dodger (RJ Fattori) are so delightful. They are a great team. Oliver is so innocent and the Dodger is street smart. A must see, Walnut Street Theatre did a great job with the casting of these 2 for Oliver.
