OLD 97'S IN CONCERT:
Alt-country pioneers the Old 97's continue to treat fans to the rollicking live shows that earned them their salt back in the mid-'90s. Featuring frontman Rhett Miller's electric vocals and a boot-stomping rhythm section, the band's performances are never short on energy, creating the perfect atmosphere for barn-burners like "Time Bomb" and "Doreen." Hot on the heels of their 2013 collaboration with country legend Waylon Jennings, the band hits the road for a 2014 tour that's sure to satisfy rock and country fans alike.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in Dallas in 1993, the Old 97's existed as a popular local bar band before their 1994 debut album Hitchhike to Rhome brought them on a national tour. Their 1995 follow-up LP Wreck Your Life attracted the eye of label execs at Elektra, who signed them for 1997's Too Far to Care. Hailed as pioneers of the burgeoning alt-country scene, the band continued to record and tour, making their first appearance on the Billboard 200 in 2001 with Satellite Rides. Since then, the band's reputation has grown with each successive album, gaining an additional boost from their boisterous live shows. Back on the road in 2014, the band will treat fans to marathon sets that include cuts from their acclaimed 2013 collaboration with country giant Waylon Jennings. Over the course of their career, Old 97's have brought countless venues to capacity, like Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"As always, one of the best live bands in the U.S. The best kept secret around."
"The group of four performed with high energy for an hour and 45 minutes, straight, no breaks. Great performance. If you don't know about the Old 97's, you are missing a great band."
"Unbelievably wonderful! Don't go unless you plan to dance and sweat. Old 97s put on the most reliably kick ass rock show around and have been doing so for years."

Great set, great audience. The set felt a bit short but that may be as much about not wanting it to end as anything else.
Opening act better than most-funny lyrics, country tinged music The Old 97's themselves were awesome-lots of energy, played most of the new CD, but also played lots of old stuff. Well worth seeing.
Good show. They had some technical problems at first but once they were resolved the show turned our pretty good.
Rhett and crew were great. I went to the show with my brother and we both felt that it was a fun time. The energy level was high and the band had fun interacting with the audience.
Absolutely a great show. The opener, David Wax Museum, was great, very personable and good music. The Old 97's played for 2 full hours, including all of the favorites, took a few requests and completely rocked. The venue was small, but great. There was nothing negative to say about the concert.
The Majestic is in some disrepair, but it just added to the overall ambiance of the event. It was very intimate, energizing, and just downright good fun... I will make sure to see them every time they are in town :)
I love how this band gives a major concert performance in a small venue!
High energy, crowd was into the show, played great variety from entire catalogue. Awesome 97's show once again! Opening act was great too. Friendly band!
My first time at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. Liked the venue a lot. Loved seeing the Old 97s live!
Great show and I have Rhett's set list to prove it! As usual the band gave it its all.
Thank you Rhett, because of you It was an Epic night. Even though my GF wanted you I got all the benefits!! And it was nice to celebrate Murray's birthday The Venue was perfect for O 97's compared to the Galaxy in Santa Ana, Ca with the Serial Lady Killers where the sound was tooo LOUD! The guitar player and drummer were tight. Rhett's voice and performance was beautiful!!
I'm not great at flowery prose, so I will say that Old 97s are amazing songwriters and musicians, as well as great performers. They rock, they twang, and they give their fans what they want: their classic songs. I'm not sure what was going on with Rhett last night, but he forgot the words in 5 or 6 of their songs and sort of mumbled his way way through some verses. But I almost didn't notice, as we were standing right in front of Ken and his great guitar-playing, and Philip's persistent-yet-integrated beats were right on. I had a little trouble hearing Murry's bass at times, but when he sings his pretty songs, it doesn't matter.
Once again the Old 97's prove they are one of the best live performance bands in the US. The guy's belted out the tunes and kept the energy going throughout the entire show. The Wonder Ball room was a great venue for the band and the few sound glitches were minor hic-ups that the Old 97's plowed right through.
Worth the ticket price..will look for them to return next year! Old 97's really bring it, when it comes to non-stop hot licks and jumpin' beat. Not a lot of talk ...all great music! Even though the venue was loud with drunken audience members, who could not contain their youthful bawdyness..It was easy to get the full performance quality. (Felt bad for the warm-up act that was lost in the noise. ..It was less than pleasant during the warm-up for sure! Rude local Portlanders..too bad).
The opening band was not that entertaining. Old 97's played some of their best songs but they didn't have a lot of energy there for the show was just OK.
The boys came out and put on a high energy show. They mixed old faves with a couple newer tunes. Phillip (drummer) is the secret weapon of that band - plays like he is having a manic episode but makes it look effortless. Rhett is a great front man and I was surprised how powerful his voice was when screaming out accents to his always entertaining lyrics e.g WHAT DID I EXPEEECCCCCT????? in Big Brown Eyes. It was Murray's birthday and he was in fine voice as well. Ken's guitar is the perfect meld of punk and country - beats his low E to death on some solo's loved watching him up close. Only down was the mix got a bit mushy the louder the band got.
I got into the Old 97's, like a lot of people, around the time Too Far To Care came out, and I went and bought everything leading up to that album. And while I didn't love the poppier direction they went after that, I still never miss a chance to see them live. They put on such an amazing show, and Rhett Miller has such charm and energy, that I end up appreciating some songs I didn't like so much on the later albums. They introduced a couple new things that I really did like, including a song about missing their home state of Texas, and a song that had new lyrics to an old Bob Dylan song, for which Rhett got the blessing of the man himself. What I really go for is the old stuff, and they delivered, with "Four Leaf Clover," "Curtain Calls," "W. TX Teardrops," "Niteclub," "Hitchhike to Rhome," and, or course, they closed with "Timebomb." Outstanding.
Absolutely amazing band, must see if you get the opportunity. My only complaint is the venue, great location but the staff was extremely RUDE and out of line.
First time we have seen them live and what a performance ! So much energy and the musicianship was incredible ! Only drawback was a little too loud. Hard to hear the vocals on some of the songs. The opening band was not my cup of tea but were very good themselves. All and all a really great night
I had never heard of Telegraph Canyon much until last night. I can honestly say they're my new favorite band. The instrumentals were out of this world and their stage presence was amazing. I will definatly recommed them to all my friends. Keep up the good work guys! carpe diem, Landers
