Loved the concert by Olafur Arnalds. Such a magical evening and really glad I got to see his performance. It would've been five stars had it not been the cramped and uncomfortable seats in the orchestra area at The Orpheum Theatre, but maybe because it's a historic theatre so they can't renovate the seats too much? IDK.
Olafur Arnalds is a true artist and genius. WHAT A SHOW!
Olafur Arnalds was super funny! He would talk in between certain songs and tells us about them and his experiences and that was unexpected and really made it that much better. His music is wonderful. No opener. Just him and his musicians for 2 hours. It was very special
Great concert, the Orpheus theatre was an amazing venue. Olafur was great as usual!
I am a big fan of Olafur's ouvre, however I was very disappointed in the live show. The music Olafur makes occupies a very specific and narrow niche. He is highly gifted at creating a mood, an atmosphere of contemplative and emotional resonance, but even that gift quickly gets tiresome when set on repeat. And that's the problem. All of his music is just SO similar to itself. Each piece follows nearly the exact same template of quietly building arc around treated piano, some ambient synths, and the Sul Pont strings, and occasional percussion/synth drums. In a live setting, where the artist will primarily have his back to the audience for most of the show, there needs to be some additional layers of visuals in order to elevate what is normally exclusively a listening experience. Olafur has a cinematic undertone to his work, that is why it has married so well as score. In fact, it is as underscore that it really excels. To have his music on as background or while working, is fabulously meditative and inspiring, but to watch it performed live it does not hold up. Olafur should really embrace the artistic opening his music facilitates and enhance his show with projected visuals. The lighting was simple and cool, but it also got old fast as we were given the range of its capability within the first couple of numbers. The show started late, and it was one dimensional. It had no arc. It was the same narrow emotional over and over. His stuff works beautifully as cinema score, and ambient background, but it falls very flat as live showcase.
What a stunning performance and a beautiful evening. Olafur Arnalds compositions are cinematic sonic histories that soak through your body and find a home in your heart. I cannot recommend this live show enough - so powerful and soft and poignant. Stop reading my review and buy a ticket : )
Done better than most events I've been to. Sound was unbelievable and visual presentation was almost as good.
Every Seat is great at the Moore Theatre. The lighting was theatrical and creative and the music was a great emotional experience. Olafur Arnolds is the type of musician that will interest all ages throughout his career.
