Oklahoma State Cowboys Men's Basketball at Gallagher-Iba Arena

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are a hard-charging team with a long history and a lethally loyal fan base. Coached since 2017 by Mike Boynton, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have appeared in six Final Four series and have won two NCAA and four conference tournament championships. Oklahoma State plays in Gallagher-Iba Arena, which was built in 1938 as the 4-H Clubs and Student Activities Building and was renamed Gallagher Hall after the beloved wrestling coach Ed Gallagher. Most recently renovated in 2000, the venue was renamed Gallagher-Iba to honor influential head coach Henry Iba. The arena seats 13,611 and is also the home of the NCAA women's division Cowgirls basketball.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Men's Basketball History

Oklahoma State's basketball program dates back to 1908, when the school was known as Oklahoma A&M College and the team was the Aggies. The university became Oklahoma State in 1957 and joined the Big Eight the same year -- midway through the 36-year tenure of Henry Iba, who started coaching basketball at A&M in 1934 and stayed until 1970. Under his tenure, the team reached the Final Four four times and won the championship twice. Coach Iba was known for an inventive and fearless defensive strategy that prized low-scoring games of endurance and perseverance using the "swinging gate" defense. In 1990, former Cowboy Eddie Sutton took the reins, taking Oklahoma State to the Sweet 16 his first year and to the Final Four twice more in 1995 and 2004, for the first time since the '40s.

More than two dozen Cowboys have gone on to play in the NBA, including NBA All-Defensive First Team 2019 member Marcus Smart, NBA champions Tony Allen, Terrel Harris and Corey Williams, and NBA All-Star John Starks. In 2001, a plane crash in Colorado during a snowstorm killed two Cowboys players and several staff members, plus the pilot and copilot, who are honored every year at an event called "Remember the Ten."

The Cowboys' rivalry with the University of Oklahoma transcends the sport of basketball and is known as the "Bedlam Series," named for the intense competition of the wrestling teams in the old Field House. The basketball rivalry between the two Big 12 teams dates back to 1907, and the Cowboys have swept the series multiple times since 2017.

    Those darn Horned Frogs!

by Rockerwannabe on 2/8/18Gallagher Iba Arena - Stillwater

I was nearly shivering as I walked across Hall Fame Street on the OSU campus last Tuesday. I wasn’t sure if I was shivering from the freezing January wind or from the anticipation of seeing my beloved, OSU Cowboys basketball team battle the TCU Horned Frogs live! The last time I watched hoops in the Gallagher Arena I just had to walk over from my dorm. Yes, it’s been a while. “Take the elevator”, one of the ushers told me as I asked for directions to my seat. Elevator? When the heck did Gallagher Arena get an elevator? This was the legendary venue that my dad helped build back in the day when real men didn’t use elevators! Wow, we got elevators now! Well, gollee, cheepers! Ain’t we in high cotton? A lot can change in 30 something years. Even the name of the arena has changed to Gallagher-Iba Arena. As I took my seat I got lost in the all the NCAA championship banners hanging from the ceiling. Yes, 10 for golf and 34 for wrestling. “There’s two for basketball,” Margaret pointed out, noting that our last hoops title was in 1946. Fortunately, one of the OSU pom-pom girls had stationed herself directly in front of me taking my mind off the fact that my beloved Cowboys haven’t been to a basketball final since the Truman administration. Well, apparently the box office was feeling the effects of the championship drought because there was no one at this game. The arena may hold over 13,000, but I think I could have walked around the place and personally introduced myself to everyone in attendance during warm-ups. Okay, it was a Tuesday night, with an early start of 6:00, and maybe the team isn’t that great this years and…okay, let’s get real here! The real reason there’s no one at these games is because few people want to pay $100 a ticket to watch a subpar college basketball team! I wasn’t a math major at this school, but I can figure that one out! Okay on with the game. As I pulled my eyes away from the shapely, little pom-pom girl, I noticed that TCU starter Jaylen Fisher was on crutches. Oh my, isn’t that a shame. I hope he gets better, AFTER this game. Of course my guys were missing starter Tavarius Shine with a wrist injury, and Kendall Smith was coming off a bout with the flu. However, I still had high hopes for my Cowboys. Although this team would struggle to beat a boys and girls club team on the road (not counting the following Kansas game), they usually hold their ground at home. So I was confident they would give a good showing for the 23 fans on hand. TCU’s Desmond Bane struck first blood as he drained a three-pointer followed by OSU’s Jeffrey Carroll’s three pointer to tie up the game, and there the game remained as we watched a few botched layups and outside shots, and (yawn, wake me when someone scores) then a free shot is made! Wrong team though as the TCU Horned Frogs take a one-point lead. I told Margaret how OSU’s 6’9” center, Mitchell Solomon, was probably the best player on our team, and the Horned Frogs must have heard me because they hammered down on the Bixby, Oklahoma native allowing him on four shots during the game leaving him with a miserable 4 points for the game. However, the game basically came down to who was going to carry their team between OSU’s Jeffrey Carroll and TCU’s Kenrich Williams, and the first half came to an end with TCU taking a 36 to 31-point lead over OSU. Only 31 points in the first half? That’s what the OKC Thunder scored in their first quarter! I guess that’s why they get paid so much. Now was time for the real competition! The cheerleader standoff! This is where the guy cheerleaders test their strength while the dainty, girl cheerleaders test their balance. The girls stand with both feet on their partner’s one hand, and he lifts them, arm outstretched, into the air. Then it’s all about who’s going to be the last, little cutie standing. Wow! I’ve got to say, that was way more intense than the game that I had shelled out $100 a ticket to watch! After the cheerleading victors were crowned, it was back to the game. TCU came out a bit too strong for my Cowboys and started to run away with the game. Well at least they did until OSU’s 6’ 7” Cameron McGriff cut loose for a monster dunk cutting the lead to six. We all jumped to our feet, and I ran around the arena high fiving all 21 fans in attendance (two must have left at half). Then tempers got a little testy as TCU’s Desmond Bane had a little push match with OSU’s Carroll, but they were quickly pulled apart before anything remotely entertaining could break out. At the game’s final buzzer OSU had fallen to the Horned Frogs in a disappointing 79 to 66 loss, but none the less the OSU faithful stuck around for the playing of the alma mater giving me the opportunity to put my arm around the person next to me and do the traditional “sway”. Of course, Margaret had bailed the second the final buzzer had sounded, so I had to stand there swaying all alone, shouting out the words “SO TRUE” during the sacred song. So true? I drove 200 miles and shelled out $200 to watch this defeat, and I’m still here proudly wearing my orange and swaying. If that isn’t the definition of SO TRUE, I don’t know what is.

Great game - went into OT and had a great time. Would have had a great time no matter who won because it was one of the best games I've attended. One of the best venues in all of college basketball.

    What a great game--and a great venue!

by Bandit2012 on 12/12/17Gallagher Iba Arena - Stillwater

We had a little problem finding it, Google Maps led us to a different arena. Thankfully there were enough other fans around we simply followed them. The Gallagher Iba Arena is very classy, a wide concourse, several concession areas and restrooms. The signage is great; it was easy to find our seats. The view was wonderful! There are no posts or other objects to obstruct your vision. The stairs are a bit steep, some may find it hard to traverse in a timely fashion, but as we didn't leave our area until the game was over, it didn't matter to us. We will be attending again!

Gallagher was rocking with fans, it was a great game & wonderful night that we almost didn't get to see. There was an issue with the Ticketmaster tickets. The venue couldn't reprint. We couldn't reprint. Scanners did not recognize bar code. We missed tip off & 15 minutes of the game.

    Excellent Bedlam game

by Anonymous on 2/21/17Gallagher Iba Arena - Stillwater

Graduate of OU with fans of both teams as children. Very enjoyable, competitive game. It is my observation that the Cowboy fans stuck by their team to the bitter end, and it paid off. I think OU fans would have headed for the door with 4 minutes to go if OU were down by 10+, and they had made 3 runs unsuccessfully. Sometimes it just takes the holding back of 1 run to discourage a team, and that is where the crowd factor comes in. Pokes fans get an A++ for their involvement in that victory.

    Cyclones won, so I'm happy

by HAVRHLL on 2/9/16Gallagher Iba Arena - Stillwater

Gallagher-Iba Arena is a beautiful arena. More Cowboys fans should attend games there. That being said, Iowa State won, as many opponents have recently, so it makes sense why the crowds are lacking.

Cowboys were not good enough to win at home in a much needed win situation. GIA is a must see arena with great atmosphere and crowd participation. Heritage Hall will make you proud to be a Cowboy and adjacent Picken stadium is spectacular!!!
