Oklahoma State Cowboys Football History

Oklahoma State University played their first season of football in 1901, when they were still known as the Oklahoma A&M Aggies. The team was not christened as the Cowboys until Oklahoma A&M changed its name to Oklahoma State in 1957. The team was a member of the Big Eight from 1960 through 1995 and joined the Big 12 Conference in 1996.

Since the early 2000s, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have been one of the most competitive college football programs in the country. Head coach Mike Gundy joined the team in 2005 and steered the Cowboys to the 2011 national championship after an overtime win against Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl. Oklahoma State has won over 20 bowl games, including a 2018 Liberty Bowl victory over the Missouri Tigers, and 10 conference titles.

Oklahoma State's most famous player is Barry Sanders, an elusive running back who won the program’s sole Heisman Trophy in 1988 after what many consider the greatest individual season by a running back. He would go on to play 10 seasons for the Detroit Lions as one of the best of all time and has been inducted to both the Pro and College Football Hall of Fame. The squad was also coached by future NFL legend Jimmy Johnson between 1979 and 1983. The Cowboys’ most notable opponent is their fellow Big 12 Conference member, the Oklahoma Sooners. The two teams face off annually as part of the schools' Bedlam Series, which dates back to 1904.

OSU vs TCU was the best college game I've been to!

by osumommy on 11/10/15Boone Pickens Stadium - Stillwater

Besides the game being amazing, the venue was fabulous as well. Lots of clean stalls in the bathroom and plenty of offerings at the Snack Bar. Seats were close together (which is to be expected) but we had plenty of room, especially because we stood most of the game! The crowd was was energetic and lively and everyone around us was fun and so into the game! Best college football experience ever!

    What a GREAT day!!

by Grapevine45 on 11/10/15Boone Pickens Stadium - Stillwater

OSU football game day was WONDERFUL!! My tickets came in the mail in plenty of time as requested!! The campus was buzzing with people and tailgate parties everywhere!! The scene did not feel crowded or overwhelming, just FUN, FUN and more FUN with people grilling, playing beanbag toss and just enjoying the day! I was afraid when it was time to go into the stadium that there would be a long wait, but clearly this school is prepared and organized for game day!! Right through the gate and to our seats, we even had time to grab some popcorn. Seating is tight - that is probably the only thing I would change. There is no wiggle room but that makes you get to know your neighbor which opens communication for another person to cheer with!! Exiting was very organized also which made for just a GREAT day - including the fact that we BEAT TCU!!! Just a GREAT day all around!!

    Go Pokes!

by FormerLadyHoopster on 9/15/15Boone Pickens Stadium - Stillwater

Very much enjoyed the game, atmosphere and seats! I did not need to use the binoculars that I brought because the seats were in the middle tier and were great.

The Marching Band was the highlight

by Pherb on 10/28/14Boone Pickens Stadium - Stillwater

Paying $90 per ticket I expect a modern, clean facility with quality services. The bench bleacher seating is too tight, even for children. The floors in the concession areas were filthy dirty. The bathrooms were dirty and ran out of paper towels. Food concessions were limited and way over-priced.

    Great game & good seats

    by Asiandoll15 on 9/17/14AT&T Stadium - Arlington

This game was action packed! Each team was represented well and played very well. Our seats were on the mezzanine level and we had a great birds eye view of the game. Definitely recommend going to a Cowboys Classic game.

    Student Section was INTO it

by Orangepowered on 9/16/14Boone Pickens Stadium - Stillwater

For a game against a smaller university and a fledgling program, the students were really into it until the start of the 4Q. Surprisingly loud in an open air stadium.

    OSU Cowboys vs Florida State

by MustangGardenGirl on 9/8/14AT&T Stadium - Arlington

Could not have been a better day. The venue was clean. The staff was well prepared. The food lines did not take long at all. It was cool in there even though it was in the high nineties outside. Our seats were on the goal line (200 level) and we had a great view of the field and the screen. We are Cowboy alum, and every Florida State fan we sat near and tailgated by were very respectful. We will go to that venue again. My only disappointment was that I tried to buy a Weeden or Bailey jersey and you didn't have any for sale. I feel you should have taken advantage that you had Cowboy people there.

    -------,---,-->

    by Nolesfan124 on 9/4/14AT&T Stadium - Arlington

FSU started their run to their repeat National Championship against a determined Oklahoma State squad. What a great game!!! I'm looking forward to the opportunity to return to AT&T Stadium to see some more exciting action. Pretty cool venue. I guess a billion plus is still enough to buy some pretty fancy digs. Let's go Noles!!!!!

Great game watching my favorite team. Some of the alcohol lines inside were long but still had a great time. We really liked the DJ area after the game.

My entire family had a great time. Even my 80 year old dad found it easy to get around and our seats were close to what he needed.
