Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first match-up, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center.

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

Enjoyed the game, but hated the ending...Thunder lost! We bought the tickets to see Blake Griffin in OKC, but still enjoyed the game. Only thing I would recommend is a few more lights in Loud City, at least until the game intro's start. It was too dark to read the Program.

the game was good. the main problem is the seating. the seats are very narrow, and i am not overweight, 145 lbs. my back began to ache midway thru the game because i could not get comfortable. you pretty much had to sit straight up in the same position the whole time.

Loved the Thunder Game! Even though the seats were practically at the top row, we could see the game! The new scoreboard is awesome, and the Ford Center employees made us fee welcome!

by tmacswife on 11/13/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

I took my husband and 3 boys to the game because it was my husbands birthday. He said that was all he wanted for his birthday. We had a great time and, what topped it off was the fact that they won the game. we would love to attend another game.

Everything was great, but the food. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and it had nothing but bread and it was a bland compressed piece of chicken.

    Thunder Players

by rhonda10 on 11/9/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

My family had a great time, and my children especially loved being able to get close to the players before and after the game. They were great about giving autographs and slapping hands with the fans.

    Great atmosphere!

by TRoe on 11/9/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

Great atmosphere with lots of energy and music. I love basketball so I would prefer to sit closer to the action next time...my $10 tickets (section 329, Row N) left me 5 rows down from the highest seat in the arena which is a little too steep and dark for my taste. I know better now and will splurge for better seats next time. All and all it was a great event and I would recommend it to anyone.

Basketball alive & well in OKC

by ADH2 on 11/5/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

The venue was great. There is lots of talent on both teams. We had good seats. The event staff was very pleasant. I was ashamed of the fans. I don't know when it became acceptable to boo the other team. That's just rude!

    Up and coming Thunder

by Heav on 11/4/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

This was my first time to a live sporting event in about 12 years, and man was it an exciting one. I will be visiting Ticket Master for more Thunder tickets through out this season. Man did both teams really put on a show. Even thought I'm a Philly born and raised all Philly Teams Fan, now that I'm living in Oklahoma, I'm starting to like the OKC Thunder. Great game last night.

OKC Thunder really play with Passion!!!

by Haz82 on 11/4/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

I bought the cheap tickets up top so I didn't know what to expect. It was really good for me and my 3 year old son. Not to bad of seats for the price. The bottled water is outrageous but thats expected I guess. I would highly recommend for a night out with the children!!

Great game/not the outcome I wanted

by raidrules on 11/4/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

Attended this game with two friends and we had a great time, game went into overtime and the only thing that would have made it better is if the Thunder had won.. Though we were in the upper section for this game it was still easy to follow the game I have never had a bad seat at this venue..

    Thunder game was incredible

by mommabacon on 11/4/09Ford Center - Oklahoma City

The facility was awesome. The workers there were very friendly, helpful and efficient. We were in the will call lane and there were workers directing us to other lanes to free our lane up and make it go faster. Once thru will call and making our way in the door, same thing. They opened up another door way to go into to break up the congestion. Up the escalators we went and at the top was a pep squad getting us fired up for the game. We sit in section 309 3rd row from the top and we felt that we had great seats. Music played the whole time. The game between the Lakers and the Thunder was so close and we only lost by three points, but I would go again and again.
