Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first match-up, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center.

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

First of all, I get to watch the game live action. Security is quick and efficient. Food is great and you have options to choose from. The people are amazing and super friendly. Going to the game has to be the best thing you can do in Oklahoma if you want to enjoy yourself.

    First Live NBA Game

by Ckenjoos on 12/30/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

Living in the Kansas City area, we only have pro baseball and football teams but no NBA teams. While visiting family during holiday in Oklahoma City, I had the opportunity to attend my first NBA game. The ticket value was excellent ($16/seat) and, despite being in the nosebleeds on one end of the court, the experience did not disappoint! Concessions were easy to access and there wasn’t a boring moment. At this event, there were activities during the various timeouts and halftime that kept things moving along. It does help when the home team wins and the Thunder did not disappoint there either :) This is something my son and I will do again hopefully when we come back to OKC in the future

    Satisfaction

by Gil Trainer on 12/26/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

As always it was a wonderful experience. I’m handicapped on crutches sip I have to get a seat in lower row of Section 103. Paycom employers are always so helpful in getting me to my seat!!!! Appreciate the same guy who gets me from entrance to my seat in wheelchair each time I attend!!!

    Paycom Staff Appreciation

by Gil on 12/20/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

I always sit in lower part of section 103. Everyone at Paycom is extremely friendly to me. I have a handicap of being on crutches. Not sure what the gentleman employee’s name is but he takes me to my seat in a wheelchair every time I attend a game. Extremely friendly and he gets me after game as well and takes me to exit.

    1st Time

by Ladi M on 12/20/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

I mostly enjoyed myself I just did not understand the rationale behind having yo remove tops off water bottles..this was an inconvenience I was not able to place my water down I had to hold it in my lap for fear someone putting something in it...other than that seats were great, view was good and OKC and Memphis played good game. Disappointed the ref didn't allow the MVP to play which was much of the excitement and reason we came to the game.

    Disappointed but great venue

by Sondra on 12/20/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

The venue and tickets were awesome. Good entertainment before and during the game. BUT the officiating at the game seemed very biased. Lots of us came to see Ja Morant and one of the technical calls was completely bogus, and I am not the only one saying that. So many people around me and myself had spent a lot of money and time to come see the star of the game, Ja Morant and he was kicked out for no reason. Some people around me left they were so upset. It was a heartbreaker for many. But at the same time, Ja is a professional and should hold his emotions in check no matter what happens.

    Restroom

by Bones on 11/28/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

Section 120 women's restroom was closed too early for cleaning. The Family restroom was out of paper towels and I could not get the soap dispenser to work

by Margie on 11/26/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

    Nothing but Satisfaction!!

by Gil on 11/4/22Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

I don’t go to that many Thunder games because of my handicap. I’m on crutches. All the personnel at Paycom are extremely helpful and courteous to me. I always get a ticket in a low row in Section 103. I enjoy my time there to the utmost and when game is over personnel see that I get to the exit safely. Great experience!!!!

Good in person when starters play

    by dbent1856 on 10/23/22

Biggest issue I have is the Thunder can't be seen in OKC on TV if you are on youtube TV. Only through NBA league pass. No local coverage. If we are the city's team, why dont they want the city to watch. I can watch the wizards and cleveland tonight, but not the thunder!

    It was awesome

by Twila on 10/8/22BOK Center - Tulsa

My Son and Grandson wanted to see a pro game…neither had seen the Thunder play so it was a perfect and local. Thanks to the venue and Thunder organization for bringing the team to Tulsa every year.
