Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only major professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first matchup, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Following the 2023–24 season, head coach Mark Daigneault won the league’s Coach of the Year Award.

The team won their first NBA Championship as the Thunder in 2025.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center(Opens in new tab).

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

Can't wait until the next area, stand vendors need it , keep you from leaving and missing the game., The main bummer in all ticket service is that , you have no history of your moment. Bring back keeping your tickets, some of sports fan collect them.

It was our first Thunder game and we loved it! Parking was easy to find and pay for, admission was seamless and kept moving. Game was a lot of fun. Our seats were high up but you could still see and enjoy the game. Leaving the colosseum was easy, so many people but crowd kept moving at a good pace. Great night for our family.

by Karma on 11/3/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent seats. The competition had the exact same seat listed at a higher price $30.

  • Loud City Fans

by Mom on 11/2/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma CityRating: 5 out of 5

My kids’ dream is to sit courtside but we’d rather be in loud city than not be there at all. It’s so fun. The crowd is amazing and all the experiences in the corridors are free. We had the best time with the caricature artist. You can make your own sign, get your face painted, and meet the cheerleaders before the game. Go!!! Make the memories.

  • Very dissatisfied

by Rvb on 10/23/24BOK Center - TulsaRating: 1 out of 5

Not a single starter or regular reserve even suited up. Took grandkids that had never been to thunder game and watched a g league game. They could have played at least a couple of minutes. Need to quit scheduling game in Tulsa.

  • Highly Disappointed

by Don on 10/14/24BOK Center - TulsaRating: 1 out of 5

For the price we paid for tickets to show up and see the G League team dressed as the actual Thunder or have to watch a bunch of guys who will never see the court was highly disappointing. We will not do this again.

  • Hmmmm

by Kd on 10/13/24BOK Center - TulsaRating: 3 out of 5

I did not realize the starters would not be playing. Disappointed. Ticketmaster process very smooth.

  • Not as expected

by Betsy on 10/13/24BOK Center - TulsaRating: 2 out of 5

I had no idea the regular players would not play at all. Disappointed

  • Not really Thunder

by Disappointed Fan on 10/13/24BOK Center - TulsaRating: 1 out of 5

This game was promoted as a Thunder game. It was really a G league game. This game should have been G league prices for tickets. A tricky way to get more money from fans expecting to see the real Thunder players at least play a few minutes. Will never be tricked again. Will not ever buy a preseason ticket again. Tell Thunder nation we are more than disappointed. Fans were leaving once they realized the trick.

  • So much fun!
