Oklahoma City Thunder History

The Oklahoma City Thunder were originally founded as the Seattle SuperSonics in 1967. The SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008 after qualifying for the NBA playoffs 22 times, winning their division six times, advancing to three NBA Finals, and winning the NBA Championship in 1979.

The Thunder are now the only professional sports team in Oklahoma. After relocating to Oklahoma City, the Thunder qualified for their first playoffs in the 2009–10 season. During the 2010–11 season, they won their first division title and the following season they won their first Western Conference championship.

The 2011–12 season marked the team’s first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1996, but they have not yet won a championship since moving to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Thunder's name comes from a reference to Oklahoma's location in Tornado Alley, and Oklahoma City being the home of the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division, which were known as the Thunderbirds.

The Thunder began their rebuilding process in 2019 after acquiring All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and drafting top prospects including Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. The new era Thunder qualified for the 2023 play-in game and won their first match-up, but ultimately did not advance to the playoffs after falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center

The Thunder have played in the same arena since Oklahoma City acquired the franchise in 2008, but it underwent several name changes before settling on Chesapeake Energy Arena in 2011. In 2021, its name was changed to Paycom Center.

But the volume and rowdiness of that college atmosphere has carried over into Thunder games, giving the metro's arena and fanbase the nickname "Loud City.” OKC has also taken to color blocking its crowd, giving different sections different colored shirts, a practice that has spread and become common among all teams in the NBA.

    Thunder v Pacers

by Tex on 3/15/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

My son and I drove up from Tyler, Texas to watch the Thunder host the Pacers. This was our second game this season and third overall on OKC. My son has remained a devoted fan since he first started following basketball around 2013. Every facet of our game was top notch! From the way all of the event staff greats and helps you, to the fan experience during the game, during timeouts and halftime. We have watched NBA games here, in Dallas and Houston but OKC definitely is hands down the most enjoyable and fan friendly environment!

    Wonderful PayCom Service/Entertainment Experience

by Gil Trainer on 3/13/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

I only go to 5-6 Thunder games a year. Would go to more but I am handicapped (on crutches), so have to find seat in Section 103 or similar. I was there March 10. The help provided to me as a handicapped person is remarkable and I am so thankful!! Keep up the great service and THUNDER UP!!!!!

It was our first time going to the Paycom center and also our very first Thunder game. Our experience was absolutely incredible. The staff were so friendly, helpful, and polite they all assisted us on places to take our children for it being their 1st experience. We will definitely be going to more games!

    View of the game obstructed

by VIJOI on 3/11/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

It was a really good game but I kept missing the good parts. WHY??!!! This is because of my seat. I was seated at Section 102 Row SS seat 11. This seat would have been great but the PAYCOM arena decided to put the camera man right there. In order for me to see the whole court I would have had to stand the entire game which in turn would have blocked the people in the rows behind of me from seeing. I kept having to move to see around the camera man or I had to look at the jumbo screen to see the game. If I wanted to see the game on TV I would have stayed at home. If PAYCOM is going to have the camera man positioned there for sporting events then they should not sell those seats because the patrons can only see the game clearly when the players are under the basket on that side or on the jumbo screen. If PAYCOM can try to position the camera person somewhere else that would be a great option as well. Also the little boy in front of me and the young lady behind me also had issues seeing the game because of the camera man as well.

    Bummer Bag Policy

by RCJH128 on 2/26/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

Atmosphere was amazing, the staff at the kids spirit booths were seriously so great, the fact that my average size clear bag that I have used to attend several college sport events was “too big” and I had to lose my spot in line to walk 3 blocks back to my car to take it back and purchase a new ‘not clear’ bag inside to hold my wallet and other necessities was ABSOLUTELY insane.

My kid was really looking forward to this. First time at paycom. It's a really nice arena. On par or better than many NBA arenas. Save time by ordering food online and picking it up when it's ready. Overall a good experience

    Could not sit down.

by Cmiser10 on 1/16/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

My son won 2 tickets back in November. So him and my wife went and I bought a single ticket as close as I could to them. My seat was in-between 2 heavier set gentlemen. Needless to say I was only able to see about half of my seat so I had to stand in the hall/walk area the whole game.

    Thunder Up!

by RBC on 1/16/24Paycom Center - Oklahoma City

Thunder games are always fun. My evening was wonderful, but there are a few issues that need addressing. First, the ushers are awesome--very helpful. The food vendors are friendly and efficient. The bathrooms are clean and large enough. Now.....here's what the Thunder organization may want to work on if they plan on building a new arena--more knee space and wider seats! I am a thin person and even I had issues with being comfortable. When you have a bulky coat, it's nearly impossible to have your coat and body fit into the chair. Also, when anyone in your row leaves, you must stand up. That can get tiresome. My biggest "gripe"is the cup holders. I bought a regular soda and had two sips before it tumbled out of the holder. The holder is not deep enough for a balance. The person in front of me also lost their mixed drink with the same problem. Note: in new arena--please have 2 separate drink holders--one for small mixed drinks and a deeper one for taller soft drinks. That is all:)
