About the Ohio State Fair

The Ohio State Fair isn't just an annual event celebrating delicious concessions, a livestock competition, creative arts and crafts and a butter cow. The fair — happening in Columbus, Ohio, at the Ohio Expo Center, located just south of downtown near MAPFRE Stadium — also boasts a series of concerts featuring well-received national acts. These gigs take place over the course of the fair in the WCOL Celeste Center, a 10,200-capacity arena and event center that received a multimillion-dollar facelift in recent years.

Ohio State Fair History

The first Ohio State Fair took place in 1850 at Camp Washington near downtown Cincinnati. Over the next few decades, the event traveled around to various Ohio cities (including Cleveland, Dayton and Sandusky) before settling into its current home at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus in 1886.

Over the years, the fair has been a hub for popular music acts. In 1928, for example, the John Philip Sousa Band performed twice a day. As rock 'n' roll, soul and country became mainstream in the 1960s, the fair's booking reflected this trend: acts such as the Bee Gees, James Brown, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker and Sly & The Family Stone performed. As the decades progressed, mainstream country, rock and pop acts became staples, as the Beach Boys, Oak Ridge Boys, Diamond Rio, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Kool & The Gang and Mel Tillis all made appearances.

In recent years, the Ohio State Fair has continued to book an eclectic concert lineup. Genres include alternative rock groups (Weezer, Devo), classic rock bands (REO Speedwagon, Styx, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple), country artists (Dolly Parton, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Reba McEntire), pop acts (Meghan Trainor, Charlie Puth), soul and R&B superstars (Patti LaBelle, Blackstreet, Keith Sweat), Christian artists (Lecrae, Matthew West) and comedians (Gabriel Iglesias, Jeff Dunham).

Great to Have the Ohio State Fair Back!

    by S. P. on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Although it seemed a little smaller than usual this year, it was, nonetheless, great to have the Ohio State Fair back in full swing! Overall there was a sense of normalcy in the world because the Fair was back up and running and given that it's been a mainstay of Ohio culture since 1847, summer in Ohio is back! Prices for food and beverages this year were outrageously high as if vendors were trying to make up for lost revenue for the couple of years the Fair didn't operate. Knowing full well that costs for products have risen exponentially, it still felt as though vendors as a whole were price gouging. There were some exceptions of course, but even the dairy barn prices were so high, that for the first time ever, I skipped the ice cream and I am an ice cream fiend! Prices aside though, the Ohio State Fair did a great job of bringing life back to our summer. The concerts were decent and the show by Gabriel 'Fluffy' Iglesias was fantastic! This is the second time we have seen him at the Fair and he sold both shows out! The Fair needs to take advantage of the crowd he brings in and have him back as often as possible! Some of the other acts looked great and got pretty good reviews, but the line-up wasn't quite as power packed as usual, but that could have to do with trying to do as much last-minute booking of talent. Next year will be bigger and better! Hopefully, the 2023 Ohio State Fair will be back to full power so to speak and the crowds will definitely come. I hope the vendors realize that hard working, middle class families cannot afford the prices they were charging this year and revert back to something a little more reasonable. My concern is that with the price points set this year, that will be the bar going forward. Time will tell, but for now, WELCOME BACK OHIO STATE FAIR!!!

    Fun at The Fair

by Roger on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

We arrived at the fair, and were pleasantly surprised that parking was free. We started at animal barns, because that's something my sons and I really enjoy. Barns were very clean and easy to get through. The butter display was amazing as always. The complimentary entertainment, did not seem to be of the same level of quality as in years past, though there were some good ones. We did not eat anything at the fair, as the prices were to high for me. I understand it is a hard year with inflation and costs, but we chose to wait and eat on the outside on the way home. Overall, enjoyable day at the fair. It is well laid out , and clean environment.

    Great time at the fair

    by Mark43701 on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Had a great time at the fair. Arrived at opening when it wasn’t too busy. All the vendors were very nice and accommodating, All of their stands were very clean and well-kept. Rides seemed very clean and well placed although the games were very sparse. Overall had a great time!

    Just as remembered

by Sarah on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I loved the excitement of all the shopping booths, the animals, and the rides. I loved the dog show and the pig races!! The only complaint I have is that it was advertised that there would be 150 vendors…but they forgot to mention that 20 of them would be the same lemonade stand or same funnel cake stand. Wasn’t a whole lot of food options as I thought (and that wasn’t covered in fried batter) so would have been nice to have some more options to try out!

    Ok

by Stevoh on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I visited the fair twice this year. The first time I saw the free Drifters show at the Celeste center. I was not impressed as they were really nothing more than a tribute band. Since I was able to enter the fair for free for senior day, I decided to go again since I still had my original ticket. But unfortunately both times there really wasn’t much to do since the fair is gauged towards families and children and most of the food was way overpriced. Overall it was bot bad as at least you get some exercise walking around.

    Reserved Excellence

    by Weaver11 on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Ohio State Fair is amazing. Totally worth going. Perfect day. BUT the reserved part is I knew what day I wanted to go, a Monday, but was unable to specify the day...which was awful as my child would have been free that day and I would have saved in my ticket. And I wouldn't have had a reminder on the last day of the fair to use my tickets. Picking a day would have been really helpful and it would make my overall review less reserved. 10/10 would recommend getting tickets early, avoiding the ticket booth lines, and figuring out how to get your tickets to display before arrival. Enjoy the easy entry to enjoy an amazing fair.

    Needs more animals

by Mom of 3 on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

The horse shows are my favorite and they were all done earlier in July before the fair even opens to the public. That was very disappointing. Also the only animals we saw were cows. Didn’t there used to be more animal stuff?

    Ohio State Fair

by Mame on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Great to be back, not quite the same as it was pre covid, but good enough. Hope some of the missing vendors will return in the future.

    The Fair is Back!

by DarlaKS on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Almost like pre-covid times. Fair food, rides, exhibits, the butter cow. Who could want more?
