About the Ohio State Fair

The Ohio State Fair isn't just an annual event celebrating delicious concessions, a livestock competition, creative arts and crafts and a butter cow. The fair — happening in Columbus, Ohio, at the Ohio Expo Center, located just south of downtown near MAPFRE Stadium — also boasts a series of concerts featuring well-received national acts. These gigs take place over the course of the fair in the WCOL Celeste Center, a 10,200-capacity arena and event center that received a multimillion-dollar facelift in recent years.

Ohio State Fair History

The first Ohio State Fair took place in 1850 at Camp Washington near downtown Cincinnati. Over the next few decades, the event traveled around to various Ohio cities (including Cleveland, Dayton and Sandusky) before settling into its current home at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus in 1886.

Over the years, the fair has been a hub for popular music acts. In 1928, for example, the John Philip Sousa Band performed twice a day. As rock 'n' roll, soul and country became mainstream in the 1960s, the fair's booking reflected this trend: acts such as the Bee Gees, James Brown, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker and Sly & The Family Stone performed. As the decades progressed, mainstream country, rock and pop acts became staples, as the Beach Boys, Oak Ridge Boys, Diamond Rio, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Kool & The Gang and Mel Tillis all made appearances.

In recent years, the Ohio State Fair has continued to book an eclectic concert lineup. Genres include alternative rock groups (Weezer, Devo), classic rock bands (REO Speedwagon, Styx, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple), country artists (Dolly Parton, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Reba McEntire), pop acts (Meghan Trainor, Charlie Puth), soul and R&B superstars (Patti LaBelle, Blackstreet, Keith Sweat), Christian artists (Lecrae, Matthew West) and comedians (Gabriel Iglesias, Jeff Dunham).

by Papaw on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Working around his schedule we still had time to enjoy the shows, the food and many things to do at this great fair. We were there a weekday and again Saturday and both days were enjoyed.

    The Fair is Back!

by FairFan on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

So glad the Ohio State Fair is back this year--we missed it! Only disappointing feature was the extra charge for the Giant Slide--what was that about??! My kids used to ride that 14 times off their ride wrist band! Only went once this year at $3/person. Unfortunate. Still, loved the fair!

My first time at the fair

by Cj on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I have heard so much about the fair since I relocated here last year. It was truly amazing. So many vendors, patrons and attractions. I was able to easily find parking and had no trouble leaving. I’m looking forward to next year.

I missed it after 3 years and was really excited to attend.

by TextileChemist on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

This was the first fair since COVID. 1) not as many exhibitors 2) many faithful exhibitors (pans, sham cloth, garden hardware, etc) did not attend 3) certain food vendors added a charge for using a credit card 4) many water fountains weren't working properly - 3 years to prepare for this fair and the fountains aren't reliable? 5) way too many religious exhibitors 6) personal preference - no smoking allowed (inside and outside) should be the rule 7) not much visible security this year

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

by Gilkar on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

What was good. FREE PARKING!!! and FREE Entry Days!!! I think this really encouraged great participation. Really clean restrooms! Very courteous and helpful staff. What was Bad. FREE PARKING!!! and FREE Entry Days!!! The parking lots were full to capacity most days. If you didn't come early, (we didn't), you either walked to the entrance gate, we used Gate 3 and the Cardinal entrance or rode the infrequent shuttles. Our first trip we walked after waiting over ½ hour for a shuttle. The new covered shuttles running around the perimeter of the fair were nice but the drivers were not knowledgeable. I had a conversation with one driver who said he was an outside contractor and was just hired to drive. The fair shuttle drivers, (using John Deere tractors and open, rather than covered cars), were very knowledgeable about which stops were close to the areas we wanted to visit. The open cars were very hot to ride in. The UGLY - Huge crowds, VERY HIGH PRICES for food and drink, ($12 for a Bahama Momma or an Italian sausage is outrageous!!). The $3 sandwich day was a joke, Sandwiches were full price in the Ohio Pavilion and elsewhere. The $3 offering, when you could find them, were reduced in size, ( an awful tasting pulled chicken slider was $3 in the Ohio pavilion), the outdoor vendors offered $3 bags of popcorn that were 3oz. in size, or a reduced portion funnel cake that was the size of a cupcake. In the future I will pack some drinks and a sandwich in a day bag and bring them with me.

    Ohio State Fair 2022

by Ms Mae on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

The fair was fair this year. My husband and I both required scooters to attend and those were a huge success! But, they made it impossible to view the chickens and rabbits. We could only ride thru the center aisle. There did not appear to be as many animals, so the cages could have been spread out more to allow access. We attended on Thur, by then no horses, no cows... And, the first corn dog was terrible. The lemonade, as usual, was perfect. Lastly, $14 for a bag of cotton candy was a crime.

Long time since we've been here

by Michael C on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I bought tickets online and got them for $2 off. I bought ride tickets and they were fairly expensive but better than buying individual ride tickets. We arrived shortly after it opened and were told we didn't need a ticket for our five year old despite not seeing anything online indicating that. Could have been my mistake though. We asked where we got ride bands since we had pre-bought them and kept getting guided to the rides area and told to find a trailer. Once we found the trailer we were admonished that the rides didn't open until 11:00 so we had to come back. Again, we didn't see anything indicating that. We walked to some of the animal exhibits and then came back to the rides. Everything was done through kiosks although you had to find specific tablets to print out bands if you pre-bought them. The rides were fine and we didn't have to wait long for them. We did look at some of the games of chance, which are very expensive, and were definitely put off by the dart stand vendor. My grandson was watching someone throw darts and the vendor offered him a free dart. Once my grandson threw and missed the vendor then told him to try these instead and placed three darts in front of him. He then turned to me and told me that would be $10. I stopped my grandson from throwing the darts and told him that I didn't appreciate his trying to snooker an 8 year old. Food is plentiful but eating areas are usually out in the sun. If you want to ride rides and see all the exhibits, then you really need more than one day to visit.

    Had better

    by #uck #ichigan on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I went 2 days this year and spent 120$ just on rides and another 200$ for drinks and food !! Wasn't the same fair I've been to every year for the past 38 years.

    Fun but lacking!

    by G’ma13 on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Lots of things missing + plenty of room for improvement!! I feel the fair has been declining over the years even before Covid! Sad to see all that has been lost. Free parking is a plus!!

Nice to be able to have a fair.

by 50 year club on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

Great 50 Year Club gathering but disappointing in the numbers within the band and choir. Totally unacceptable that there was no Draft Horse Show or other horse show during the actual fair.

    Fun day!

by Joan on the lake on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

The Ohio State Fair is always a fun place to go. There's plenty to do and see. And, every kind of food you can imagine- Lemon Meringue deviled eggs??!!? We were there on a very hot, humid day. We arrived when the gates opened and left around 6:00 pm. It was a long day! The kids rode rides from 11:00 when they opened until about 5:00. Two suggestions: more shade is needed in the ride areas. Grandma and Grandpa can't be in the sun all day. There were a few tents set up, but not nearly enough. A few more misting tents would be great! And, how about an all day drink pass like the all day ride passes? I'm talking water, not pop or lemonade. $4 a bottle gets expensive, even if you do refill them! Definitely worth the 2 1/2 hr drive. I like that area hotels give discounts if you go to the fair.

Great to Back at the Ohio State Fair!

by Thomas S on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I truly enjoyed being able to, once again, take my family to the Ohio State Fair! We last went in 2019 as the Global pandemic shut everything Fair-related down for almost 3 years. Ticket Master made purchasing tickets very easy! The site was very user-friendly, with great visual images and clear navigational cues! I was able to just use my cellphone to present the tickets at the gate! A quick scan and we were in! It was nice to walk around the Fair and devour that delicious food! And using Ticket Master was far more convenient than having to buy tickets at a store, at the gate or having to print out paper tickets!

    Disappointing this year

by daffid on 8/10/22Celeste Center - Columbus

I’m someone who goes to the fair for things outside of food and rides. I went this year on the first weekend, and there were hardly any animals. Only some sheep and poultry. Some of the birds in the poultry section were in filthy, disgusting poop covered cages. It seemed like they weren’t being cared for properly. I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to the fair. It could be so much better.
