Ohio State Buckeyes Men's Basketball History

Ohio State first fielded a basketball team in 1898 and played its games through 1919 at an on-campus building known as the Armory. In 1912, the Buckeyes joined the Big Nine conference. Four years later, the league was rechristened as the Big Ten, its current name.

Over the years, Ohio State has been guided to success by several notable coaches, including Fred Taylor, who helmed the team between 1959 and 1976, and Jim O'Brien, whose tenure stretched from the late '90s to the early '00s. Future NBA greats (and Basketball Hall of Famers) John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas, as well as 2010 Naismith College Player of the Year Evan Turner, have also passed through the program. The Buckeyes' main competitors tend to be their fellow Big Ten members, although their biggest rival is the Michigan Wolverines.

Currently coached by Chris Holtmann, who took over in the 2017-'18 season, the Columbus-based Buckeyes have made 11 appearances in the NCAA Final Four, winning the championship in 1960 and taking home two NIT championships, in 1986 and 2008.

The Buckeyes play in the Value City Arena at The Jerome Schottenstein Center (often shortened to the Schottenstein Center), which opened in 1998 and is the largest arena in the Big Ten, seating 19,500 for basketball. Appropriately, the school boasts a vocal, robust student fan base that cheers on the team in a section known as the Buckeye NutHouse.

    Great fun!

by SuperMichael on 12/6/23Schottenstein Center - Columbus

I hadn't been to an Ohio State Men's BB game since the Schott first opened. OSU played Iowa and lost! :( However, this game was very entertaining and the Bucks doubled up on the Hawkeyes for most of the game until around the 5 minute mark. Then the Hawks staged somewhat of a comeback and got within about 5 points a few times. But in the end, they had too many turnovers which enabled the Buckeyes to build up a fairly comfortable lead to win it. I hope to attend another game soon and will Ticketmaster to purchase my ticket(s).

The seats were great. We love going but just can’t afford it very often as tickets are just too expensive.

    Awesome

by Ann on 1/10/23Schottenstein Center - Columbus

Visiting from Bermuda the game was amazing. The atmosphere was electric and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The Ohio fans were phenomenal and we totally got caught up in their energy and excitement. My 20 year old son has not stopped talking about the experience and we are looking forward to our next game.

    Great game!

    by G. C. on 12/12/22Schottenstein Center - Columbus

OSU beat Rutgers on a buzz beater with just 5 seconds left. They had to go all the way down the court and hit a perfect shot. Such an exciting game!

    Exciting

by Moose on 12/11/22Schottenstein Center - Columbus

A buzzer beating victory makes for a great experience for everyone. At 68 years old my only complaint at both basketball and football games is the horrible rap music they blare at ear shattering levels while the players are warming up.

    Great until parking gridlock

by Nutballer on 3/9/22Schottenstein Center - Columbus

Great tailgating. Everyone friendly, even the ichigan fans. Police presence reassuring. Entering and finding seats a breeze! Would have liked more options at Huntington level area for concessions. Music, announcers, performances between time outs were excellent. Fan engagement was the best. Leaving the arena, also easy and quick. LEAVING THE PARKING AREA WAS AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE! We sat in line to leave the Scarlet & Gray area for an actual 46 minutes without moving. No traffic directors in sight. FINALLY get out to 315 to see two patrolmen blocking the right turn. What a disaster! We will never again park in OSU parking.

    Obstructed view

by Tom on 3/6/22Schottenstein Center - Columbus

The atmosphere is super fun! But my tickets did not say obstructed view, and when we got there a hand rail was blocking 1/2 the court. Definitely should be a warning on the tickets or just no seats sold there.

    OSU vs IU

by Dodger on 2/24/22Schottenstein Center - Columbus

I took my 8 year old grandson to his first Ohio State basketball game. My only regret was that he couldn't sit closer to the court. We were up about 10 rows from the roof, in an arena that was less than half full.

    Afraid of Heights

by TB on 2/22/22Schottenstein Center - Columbus

I was so excited about game but when i discovered how straight up the seats go at shot in section 3 it quickly changed my experience because i am afraid of heights. I have sat in upper areas before but nothing this extreme of angle ..too scary! Next time I will know to spend a few extra bucks to sit lower
