My son and I first time at North Star College Cup and by the sounds of the Gophers pulling the plug the last. Great venue, great seats, great games. Love the environment and the teams playing. Extremely disappointed that the Gophers (My wifes alma matter) are ending the North Star College Cup. Gophers blame it on attendance. Friday the Xcel was full, Saturday not as much but still a good crowd but I blame half that on Gophers losing on Friday and ending up in 3rd place game. My alma matter Bemidji State put this out in their alumni association news otherwise I would never of heard about it. Marketing of the Cup by the Gophers seems to be the big issue not the venue or the Cup itself.
What can I say...4 Minnesota colleges in the top 25 in the nation...two games for $40. You'd be hard pressed to buy a single game for that price. Will definitely consider going next year. Every seat at the Excel Energy stadium is a great seat so buy the cheapest tickets you can get.
The event itself was an amazing experience. However to get the parking pass you have to park outside the venue and hope you dont get a parking ticket, go inside and get the pass (ticket) and then go park again. Does not make any sense. Would not recomend getting the parking pass, it only saves you a couple dollars and could get you a parking ticket. Other than that, the atmosphere was amazing and enjoyed the rest of the event.
I love hockey. To be able to watch hockey on our anniversary weekend is awesome. We've been married for 4 years. We've been going to it since it started. Would like to see northstar college apparel though, like shirts or hats.
Fun event, but discontinued by the participating schools. No more review needed.
We have gone to all three tourneys. It is exciting to watch MN teams. The facility is very nice. The workers there are extremely nice and helpful. The concessions were great too. Very nice to be at a place with a hotel across the street. Only issue was - we received notice for priority seating but we were not able to get good quality seating with that notification. We waited and waited and finally got good seats but why didn't we get them right away? Had we bought tickets when first notified thinking they would be the best seats available/left we would have been quite upset when better seating was offered. Usually the best seating is offered first with priority.
The north star cup is an awesome event for the Minnesota schools. I wish more people would go. For being the state of hockey the Ex should be full. You get a chance to see four excellent hockey programs in one weekend.
I went with my brother to the Saturday games, and had a great time; I was able to see family friends from a couple of the colleges involved, and met some great people at the games as well. If you're a fan of fast-paced college hockey, you can't beat getting two games for the one price.
Our family has always been Gopher fans, as well as St. Cloud and Mankato Alumni, and one current student at UMD. We think this tournament is great since they decided to change the WCHA and we have attended all 3 years. It is our family winter get away hockey weekend. I didn't like the change to the Sat/Sun format. We are from out state and it makes for a late night Sunday/early Monday morning when you still have a 2 1/2 hr. drive after the championship game. We prefer the late afternoon Friday game. If they want to leave Sat. at 1:00 and 4:00 that would be fine.
