North Carolina Tar Heels Women’s Basketball History

The University of North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball team competed for the first time during the 1974-75 season. UNC joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1977 and have since claimed nine ACC Tournament trophies and four regular season conference championships. Among the team’s 32 appearances in Women’s March Madness, the Tar Heels have won the National Championship game once in 1994 and advanced to the Final Four on three occasions. Coach Sylvia Hatchell led the team from 1986 to 2019, retiring with the third-most wins for a women’s college basketball coach and a 751-325 record at UNC. Courtney Banghart succeeded Hatchell as head coach ahead of the 2019-20 season.

North Carolina Tar Heels at Carmichael Arena

Carmichael Arena, or “Blue Heaven,” has deep roots in the history of UNC athletics. Opened as the Carmichael Auditorium in 1965, the 6,822-seat venue shares a wall with the basketball team’s previous facility at Woollen Gymnasium. Carmichael Arena served as the joint home court for the men’s and women’s basketball teams until 1986, and it continues to house the women’s basketball team as well as UNC volleyball, women's gymnastics and wrestling. Its low, domed ceiling and steel-beam framework design allow for greater sound reverberations, heightening sound levels and giving Carmichael Arena one of the best home-court advantages in all of college basketball.

  • Great except entering

The experience as a whole was great; however, upon entering the game they only had one gate open for security and 4 lines at the door waiting to come in and then we had to funnel into 1 line. It was chaotic and unorganized and took way longer than it should have. The seating could have been more clear on the seating chart. I was trying to get seats close to the away bench however we ended up on the opposite side because nothing was listed.

  • Enjoyed the game!

The experience was great! Our girls enjoyed their time at the game and the service at the concession stand.

  • Memorable Husky win, restroom issues.

by New Guy on 11/18/24First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

Great game with a Husky Win and a record tying performance. Now to the Arena. The sightlines were good. The Handicap seating area was very nice. Plenty of room for my wife's wheelchair and a comfortable folding chair for me. The area was roped off, so no cross traffic in front of us. Good job. BUT, the handicap bathroom was a huge disappointment and a problem. In my opinion, this is one of the worst 20% if all the ADA restrooms I've been in. it is near impossible to close the stall door by yourself if you are in a wheelchair. Then very difficult to maneuver to lock the stall door once in. At a minimum, there should be a handle mounted on the inside of the door so you can grab it to help close the door. The grab bars were also barely adequate. They need to be bigger and better located. It is always best to have a Family Restroom that is larger and properly equipped to be fully ADA accessible. Whoever designs these restrooms should consult with someone who is handicapped. We see things and experience things on a whole different plane than the average construction and design crew.

The parking was quick and the venue was easy to enter from the parking lot. The security and ticket check-in lines moved quickly. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was a great experience
