Hypnotic and mesmerizing Philip Glass music was the perfect setting for this beautifully choreagraphed opera.
The fact that there was as much ballet as opera made the experience quite unusual and special. The singing, acting and dancing were first rate as was the integration of the singers with the dancers. The English titles were projected on the backdrops instead of as supertitles and I found that much better than supertitles. Two things about the music. You had better like the music of Philip Glass or, at least, not be bothered by it. And I would have much preferred an orchestra to 3 pianos. The plot was quite ridiculous, but probably no more ridiculous than most operas. The scenery was minimalist in keeping with the music and that was okay.
Carmen is THE opera best suited to introduce neophytes to the experience of the world of opera. It's music is universally recognized by almost everyone because it is played in so many venues familiar to the general public. Children are best introduced to the opera by attending this performance, and the presence of so many youngsters in the audience at Progress Energy Center demonstrated the continuing popularity of the opera among the general public. This production was simply grand: great cast, superb orchestra under the capable direction of Timothy Myers, and a most enjoyable story. It was a genuine delight and was a fitting contribution to this year's North Carolina Opera schedule.
The venue was beautiful and the cast was fantastic. Overall it was a very enjoyable and memorable experience.
I thought that for a non New York or other 'big city' performance it was quite good and entertaining.........unfortunately, the venue is not designed for opera and the voices, while good, did not project well.
Although the story line was a bit long/slow and not one of my favorite opera story lines.. the music was beautiful! Andrea Moore has an outstanding voice, and the orchestra was excellent.
I have seen a lot of opera in NY and thought the NC performance was great. Andrea Moore was beautiful. Overall it was great!
I was disappointed by the production - the set was very bland and the lead performers, while both having wonderful voices, did not give very strong performances. Definitely not the best version of Carmen I have seen.
I loved watching the Opera: Carmen, I have only seen it on TV. But to see it live was breath taking. The raw emotion you feel was truely amazing.
NC Opera presented the opera "Carmen" in Raleigh the weekend of Oct 14-16. I enjoyed the music and was very impressed with the leads in their performance. The "second tier" was excellent in their quintet in the second act along with our Carmen. The chorus was good but had a tenor "ringer" that rang a little loud. Not horribly but somewhat irritating to me. He was in his element in the aforementioned second act quintet. I was a little miffed at the major cut in the 4th act even though that would have put the ending after 11.
The orchestra began with an outstanding overture, giving us hope for an outstanding performance. They did deliver! Carmen was perfectly suited for the part, her acting believable and singing superb. Thankfully, she was the right age and body type to pull off the role to perfection. Mikaela did indeed have a golden voice as well as the sweet innocence of a 17 year old. The tenor lead did a very fine job acting, I am still looking to find a tenor who doesn't work too hard to sing. The support roles, locally cast, were also no disappointment. Every bit as good as the leads! My friend fell in love with the voice of the baritone Toreador. Although it appeared that he was new to the professional stage, his voice was fresh and exciting. Loved the entire show!
It was great very nice place and well done..it was really a great evening
The singers had beautiful voices. My family had a wonderful time. The orchestra was awesome.
The NC Opera did a fantastic job with this production. I cannot wait to see Verdi's IL Torodove in April.
The acoustics of the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium leaves much to be desired for unamplified performances. I doubt I'll ever go to another opera there again. This production should have been performed at Fletcher and probably would get 4 stars in that venue (it's hard to project and emote powerfully into such a space). Beyond the venue the staging was too static and somewhat boring. Carmencita is a difficult part requiring grace, power, and a consistent thread of sensuous hedonism. Leann Sandel-Pantaleo's voice was easilly up to the challenge (her Habenera was a joy to listen to), but her presence and physicality were lacking. . The male leads (William Joyner as Don Jose, and David Williams as Escamillo) were convincing and well rendered. The earnestness and clarity conveyed in Joyner's tenor saved an otherwise uninspiring ensemble.
Overall, the show was quite good. Most of the singers were terrific. I think the costumes could have been a little more elaborate. My biggest negative was length of time. There was nothing written on the website when purchasing the tickets, that the show was three hours in length with two intermissions. Especially with an 8pm start time, therefore getting out at 11pm.
In a boldly designed production of Carmen, Andrea Moore as Micaela stood out . Her rich lyrical soprano soared into the vast space of Memorial Auditorium and warmed it beautifully.
Exceptional performance. Really impressed with Andrea. She captured the stage and the core of the story. Her voice is absolutely outstanding.
The Turn of the Screw was an unforgettable performance by the cast and orchestra. Andrea Moore stole the show as the Governess! Looking forward to more unique and intriguing performances for NC Opera.
Excellent production of a gripping opera. Fine singing and playing, creative staging and lighting.
