About

Due in part to front man Charlie Fink’s distinctively abysmal voice, Noah and the Whale characterized themselves as a quirky fixture among the alternative genre for their trademark fusion of folk and electronic elements in 2008, produced by frequent employment of the fiddle, harmonium, harmonica and ukelele. Over the course of the next two albums, 2009's The First Days of Spring and 2011’s Last Night on Earth, changes to the band's lineup, including the exit of singer Laura Marling, resulted in defining shifts to Noah and the Whale's original sound. Their latest album, Heart of Nowhere, premiered May 6, 2013 via Mercury Records.

    British invasion strikes again

by ThePredatoryWasp on 6/17/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

This was easily in the top 3 best shows I've ever seen. I was unprepared for the sheer amount of face melting intensity they blew out of their amps. Seriously, five English gentlemen in three piece suits should not have been able to blast that strong of a whirlwind of music. Their albums produce music more on the whimsical side, but their concert had the electricity of a thunderstorm in Zeus' pants.

    A Whale of a Show

    by TheNum555 on 6/17/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

The opening act, Bahamas, did a phenomenal job. Their lead had a very welcoming, engaging stage presence and the music didn't disappoint. Noah and the Whale played a long set, including an unplanned acoustic song when there were power issues due to a storm and a two song encore. The violinist had great energy and at times stole the show, though each member had excellent energy and performed at a top tier level.

Excellent job. The Bahamas were spectacular, but they did not come close to stealing the show from these guys. Their music is awesome, and they have a great stage presence. I would recommend to anyone.

    The Show Was Great!

by littlemotel on 6/10/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I absolutely love Noah and the Whale. I will definitely see them again when they come back to town. They're amazing. Everything from the lights to the unique spin they put on a few of their songs to play them live. They put on a great show. I will forever adore NATW. Tom and Fred came outside the venue after the show and we got to speak with them for a breif moment. It was so nice.

    by Randomness7 on 6/6/11Bluebird Theater - Denver

Great concert and venue. Very talented musicians with a unique sound and energetic performance. The Bluebird is a great place to see music. Nice staff, not a bad seat in the house, and clean.

    NATW: El Rey

by rachelmann on 5/28/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

They were extremely energetic. The lead singer has an a very striking, consistent voice. They emote fantastic musical talent. They also talked to the crowd and really made them apart of the show. I loved what they did with the lights. They went flashed along with the music.

Great sound and production. The lighting guy did some fun things with the chandeliers in the El Rey. Noah and the Whale's set seemed a bit short clocking in at just around an hour but it was a great show.

    Killer third album

by Lovethewhale on 3/27/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

It's been almost a year and a half since NATW has toured the US, since they took time off to write their third album. The wait has been worth it. The new album is an awesome progressive contemporary rock album. Like their previous two albums there is a thematic sound to it that is totally unique while at the same time clearly an expression of the music that has influenced their young lives to date. Tom Waits and Tom Petty and the Velvet Underground all ring through loud an clear, but the album is still truly a sound that is umistakably NATW. Back to reviewing the show. It was great. I went both nights to see if they vary in their performances. Turns out, they did almost the exact same set list both nights in almost the same order, which was fine b/c most of it was their new album and it's great to hear them rock out. They came out dressed to the nines, in 3 piece suits and ties. They may be young, but they are not foolish and their dapper duds are merely an extension of their sophisticated sound. I was a little surprised that they played 5 Years Time both nights for the encore, but they did play it with an alternative edge, which was a nice twist. I can't wait to see them in June at Irving Plaza.

Flew from Charlotte to NYC for this show and it was totally worth it. N&TW killed it. Their energy proved that they love playing their music. The mixture of instramentation was beautiful to hear. Noah and the Whale was AMAZING

by freepeople92 on 3/24/11Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

At first I was a little worried that Noah and the Whale would be a little slow, but once they started playing I knew that it was going to be awesome. They really engaged the crowd, they sounded amazing, and all together it was just so much fun. Charlie and his band mates are so cute.
