NIGHTWISH IN CONCERT:

When it comes to all-out symphonic metal spectacle, few bands hold a candle to the outsized pomp and showmanship of beloved Finnish rockers Nightwish. From the synchronized pyrotechnics and gigantic customized organ that dominate the band's stage show to the bludgeoning riffs and synth stabs that drive their music, Nightwish has all their bases covered to ensure fans are treated to a spine-tingling concert experience unlike any other. Acclaimed vocalist Floor Jansen joined the band in 2013 and her powerful vocals have become a highlight at their live shows, drawing fans out in droves for electric performances of favorites like "Amaranth" and "Nemo".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Nightwish formed in Kitte, Finland in 1996 under the leadership of acclaimed singer-songwriter Tarja Turunen. The band's early releases established them as stars in their home country, but international superstardom eluded them until the '00s when albums like Century Child (2002) and Once (2004) made their way onto charts around the world. The band parted ways with Turunen in 2005 after releasing the live album and DVD End of an Era, but in 2007 they reemerged with a new lead singer -- Anette Olzon from Sweden. The band recorded two chart-topping albums with Olzon -- 2007's Dark Passion Play and 2011's Imaginaerum -- before her pregnancy led them to seek her replacement for the Imaginaerum World Tour. Floor Jansen was announced as Olzon's permanent replacement in 2013, and she quickly earned rave reviews with her impassioned performances on the road. With their 2015 album featuring Jansen already generating buzz, Nightwish have fans chomping at the bit to catch their fresher-than-ever live show in the flesh.

Great show, but not for this kind of theater

by Juddo on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

Nightwish and Kamelot definitely put on an amazing show, but I feel that the theater it was played in was more for events like plays or more mellow concerts. There is no standing room, so everyone is confined to their seats, which really puts constraints on a crowd that should be moving with the music and showing their enthusiasm. They did play a good amount of slower songs, but to really enjoy the more upbeat songs it would help to be able to move around more.

    Nightwish at The Beacon

by DonnaofDeath on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

What can I say? The musicianship of Nightwish was superb, of course. But as a fan of all of their works I was ultimately disappointed. Firstly, I have tried very hard to like Anette but I simply find her voice to be very shrill. The last 2 Nightwish CDs I feel, are not as epic as previous ones. Regardless there are still some tracks that I enjoy - BUT THEY DID NOT PLAY ANY OF THEM. For some reason they gave us all the B songs. I can't say I understand their choices. The energy level wasn't there, there were too many slow selections, and none of the big, driving epic songs like Poet & The Pendulum, Ghost Love Score, Storytime, or Dark Chest of Wonders. Sigh, so, all in all I was glad to see them live but still disappointed in their choice of songs.

    Nightwish was AMAZING!!!

by oceangirl813 on 9/17/12Beacon Theater - New York

I took my fiance, who is not really into Nightwish - however he wanted to go because he knows I love them. The Beacon Theater was great and had a "cozy" feel to it. We were in the lower balcony and had a great view of the stage. I've never heard anything by Kamelot before - my fiance got really into them and I really liked them too. They only played for 45 min, but it was awesome and it really got the flow of the concert going. Nightwish was amazing, their set list could have been made from my personal play list on my ipod of all my favorite Nightwish songs. It was an impressive show and my fiance was excited to have known as many songs as he did - thanks to me. I have to say Nightwish was the best concert I've been to. Probably because I had been wanting to see them for about 5 years!!! Can't wait to see them again :-)

    Nightwish

by Anavelro2000 on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

The place was ok. My seat was at balcony but i suggest people who want to go crazy and dance and not sit down, to get a seat at the lower level. People from the balcony were sitting down and didnt dance. The concert was great. I didnt like the sonorization at kamelot. I didnt understand a word from them. Nightwish was pretty amaizing. I dint expect that anette will be such an entertainer and her voice perfect for the new music. At the end of the show we asked for a biss but they didnt show up on stage anymore. That was a bit sad. All in all i had fun and i enjoyed the new nightwish experience

    Nightwish On Top Once Again

by Braverman on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

Nightwish proved once again why they are at the spearpoint of the Symphonic Metal movement. They played all their classics including some great tracks from their latest album "Imaginaerum". They also performed "Nemo" from "Once" with a slower pace which gave the classic a more intimate vibe and showed the contrast between Tarja's operatic vocals and Annette's "pop-ier" ones.

    Amazing show!!

by landoftara on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

Nightwish did an excellent performance. The intro was totally awesome and their entrance into Storytime was epic! Nightwish sounds very tight and has really come a long way with their new singer.

I will be seeing them again, for sure.

by idicvulcan on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

Nightwish was as epic live as they sound on their CDs. Everything about the show was great. While I would've preferred a venue with better audio equipment, the experience was still stellar.

Great music FINALLY comes to NYC

by Crystiannia on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

Much bigger outside of the States, Nightwish put on an incredible show at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. I'd waited several years to catch them here and wasn't sure how good it would be live. They nailed it! From the vocals to the playing to the sound level, everything was spot on. The energy of the band was contagious and the great time they seemed to be having definitely spilled over into most of the crowd. Can not wait to see them again at the very next chance. Was disappointing that they didn't perform an encore, but it was getting late and a portion of the crowd seemed to want to head out to avoid traffic/catch their trains home. I really wished they'd have come back out for at least one more song. As for the venue: the Beacon is gorgeous and classic, but I don't think they are set up well to handle large volumes of people. They open the front doors and then heard everyone into the hallways but don't open the theatre doors. They have on the spot "bars" set up in various spots that are un-necessary and take up far to much room. Also, the staff kept trying to herd people out the back exit after the show despite attendees saying they wanted to stop at the lone merch stand out front or the restrooms to the sides. Will say that security was very polite, but strict and firmm which was nice.

    Nightwish and Kamelot

by Glaucus on 9/17/12Beacon Theatre - New York

It has taken me many years to see Nightwish. Unfortunately I was never able to see them with their old singer, but the new material that they have now is still enjoyable to me, so it was worth the time to check them out. The venue was quite magnificent, the Beacon Theater in NYC has some astounding outwork anywhere you look. Plus, the Hellenistic theme of it all fit very well to the type of music that the bands play. However, there was no pit area. ... That was awkward. Kamelot, I have never seen before, but I have an album or two of theirs. To say the least, there was an unexpected amount of energy that really got the crowd going. Plus, the whole group is made up of some accomplished musicians, with their vocalists being a bit of a hallmark to greatness. As for Nightwish... Amazing. I did enjoy the band more with their original singer, and quite honestly, they could not quite match the energy that Kamelot gave. But what they lacked in energy they made up in sheer musical power. Very fun, very enjoyable.

    Great performances, but....

by kjllnjmkn on 9/15/12Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Don't get me wrong Nightwish was good and Kamelot was amazing, but the quality of the show for the price of the ticket was a disappointment for me. Kamelot is one of my favortite bands and they did great, but only a 45 min setlist? Nightwish was good, but I'm not into them so I left halfway through their set. Not a fan of the venue, but wasn't the worst I;ve been too. Overall not bad, but not good. Glad I saw Kamelot and if they ever play a set longer than 45min I'll be back.

    Disappointing and overpriced at $50/ticket

by centerstageprog on 9/15/12Center Stage Theatre - Atlanta

Unfortunately, you had the bands backwards. Kamalot was fabulous but played only 48 minutes. Nightwish was a serious disappointment. Left early as many others did also. Would have much rather seen Kamalot as the headliner with another opening band. Lead singer for Nightwish had below average voice and stage presence. Rest of band seemed good but lead chick detracted from overall performance. Did enjoy the instrumentals and everything done with the pipes/flute.

by Marvelaz on 9/10/12Nightwish - Philadelphia

Nightwish were the only music band that could hook me with their music ever since 2005, and they're not that popular in Egypt so it was hard to get their new albums. Now the i'm in Philly, this is gonna be my first time to see them playin Live, it's like a dream come true !!!!
