I attended the Nier: Orchestra Concert 12024 in Chicago. Overall it was an enjoyable performance but there were definitely some sore spots that brought the overall quality down.
Mainly the choir used was simply not up to snuff and not good at all. They were very obviously pitchy, especially the altos. They were off-key in places and very disjointed. Tenors lost their places multiple times and struggled to keep up, making mistakes very obvious. For a concert with many choral pieces, beloved by fans, it was truly disappointing and honestly very unprofessional for those musicians to be unable to perform the pieces they were hired for.
The percussion section was also struggling with tempo in a few pieces, and lacked a lot of punch and drive for more intense moments.
The pianist was great, but they were playing on a low quality keyboard that was glaringly obvious. For an orchestral performance to not even have a real piano is a shame and a disservice to the pianist.
The acoustics in the Rosemont theatre were subpar as well, with flat front facing speakers and a very narrow soundstage. Mixing in the microphones were uneven in the beginning, but seemed to mostly be fixed after the intermission.
For the highlights, both Emi Evans and J'Nique Nicole were impeccable. Their performances were rousing and beautiful and hearing them live more than made up for the other lacking performances.
The concertmaster, solo cellist, oboe and bassoonist were very talented and had incredible segments themselves. The brass section of the orchestra were bright, clear and and vibrant.
I think fans would overall enjoy the show, but it's a shame that there isn't more care or budget allocated to the actual musicianship, which the orchestral arrangements from Nier and Nier Automata more than deserve.
