    Fantastic Show, "Cozy" Venue

by Whiny McGee on 4/14/19The Wilbur - Boston

Nick Lowe being backed up by Los Straightjackets doesn't quite seem like a good pairing on paper, but it was brilliant, and gave Nick's songs an edge they haven't had for quite a while and giving him a chance to dip in to some of the older tracks. The show was quite entertaining, but, while the opening act was nice enough, it went on a bit too long. The main event was, as previously, mentioned, dynamite, and while I'm sure some attendees might have been worried when Nick left mid-show to let Los Straightjackets take over, they needn't have worried, because they were a force unto themselves. One of the problems with the venue (the Wilbur Theatre) is that they insist on cramming as many people into the venue as possible, making table seating quite tight and the seats are arranged so you have to twist your body or crane your neck to see the show. Also, the table closest to the stage thought that the show was strictly for them, and really didn't seem to have any consideration for the people around them (and this from a viewer who wasn't directly affected by their shenanigans). Still a great time.

    Nick the knife

    by Billthecat85 on 10/13/18Neptune Theatre - Seattle

Nick has been rejuvenated by Los Straitjackets and the show was more fun than it has been in years. I left for my two hour drive home afterwards high on a cloud.

    Master Songwriter and Los Straightjackets

by ScottylikesConcerts on 10/13/18Neptune Theatre - Seattle

I have been a Nick Lowe fan since the 80s when I first heard him and Dave Edmunds in Rockpile. I loved songs like 'Heart of The City' and 'Ones Too Many'(and a Hundred Aint Enough) so much that I practically forced my own, fledgling garage band to add those songs to our set. The art of combining musicianship with clever lyrics is not new, but to add such strong pop sensibilities and humor is rare and Mr.Lowe continues to do this with this tour, splitting the duties with the super tight and well-crafted act that Los Straightjackets has honed since they came on the scene. The Dick Dale/Chuck Berry themes that pervade the four Los Straits background is a perfect fit for Nick Lowes traditional roots-rock posture, right down to the Johnny B.Goode licks and Nicks bobbing Elvis leg. Both acts are correct for each other, nearly a 50/50 split in talent and I am sure this is no accident. Still a saavy player in the concert touring business, Lowe came off of a solo tour the last time he was here to rekindle the hearts of his fans with the great pop-rock wit that made him famous around the world. The show felt short, timewise, at around 1:50, but with interludes where Nick left the stage to let Los Straits do thier instrumental thing, (including 'I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass') then return to do his better-known songs worked well and after a Batman Theme rave-up by L.S., Lowe returned to play the anthem, 'Whats So Funny (About Peace, Love and Understanding)' and ended his set with a perfect, heartfelt encore, saying 'Heres a song done by a dear friend whose going through a rough patch' whereby he stood solo, centerstage and delivered 'Alison', the timeless Elvis Costello classic with a simple acoustic guitar and a pure, fine voice. This alone was worth the price of admission. Thank you Nick, thank you Los Straightjackets and thanks to The Neptune management for hosting these guys for our enjoyment. SR

Nick Lowe and Los Straitjacket were a Hoot!

    by Nannypoo00 on 10/13/18Neptune Theatre - Seattle

What a great and memorable night. The muchachos energy was infectious and Nick’s classic songs were a joy to hear. My favorite part of the show was a soulful rendition of Alison, to send good wishes to his friend, Elvis. We all sung the chorus also to send it along.

    Nick Lowe with Los Straightjackets

by ZoFromToledo on 7/4/18Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

Nick Lowe was the real deal! So glad I went. Los Straightjackets were the perfect backing band. They were entertaining in their own right. Just a great overall show. The crowd was into it and Nick Lowe appeared to be really happy to be in Detriot.

I knew Detroit when it used to Rock N Roll

by Lefty57 on 7/2/18Saint Andrews Hall - Detroit

First time seeing both Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets and I have to say that this show was more fun than any rock concert has a right to be. Mr. Lowe was buoyant and emoting British charm while Los Straitjackets are like a band straight out of a comic book. These guys are a hoot with their stunt guitar playing and lucha libre wrestling masks. Haven't been to St. Andrew's Hall in a few years and was very pleasantly surprised at how much they cleaned up their act. Very enjoyable musical night in the Big D.

    Nick with a band...nirvana

by Wrynot on 10/27/17Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

We fans of a certain age would prefer a start prior to 9:10pm on a school night but Nick with a band beats all. Los Straitjackets are excellent musicians but for a show that only lasted 80 minutes I was disappointed when Nick left the stage for a solid 20+ minutes mid-act for LS to strut their stuff. More Nick=good, less Nick=less good. Having said that, great show. Seemed to favor more early Nick (So It Goes, Heart Of the City) and very recent stuff, with most work from Abominable Showman, Party of One, Cowboy Outfit) passed over. Still, good show.

Great Combo: Lowe + Straightjackets + Birchmere

    by Kryten79 on 10/23/17Birchmere - Alexandria

Nick Lowe was amazing as always. Reimagined his hits to reflect his aging and his crazy backing band for the night. Los Straightjackets were proper musicians and most entertaining. The Birchmere is a wonderful place to see a show. It is small enough to feel intimate. Great views from most all seats. The sound guys were spot on this night (sometimes they miss, but not this time)! (Tip: Don't sit on the back wall or the very front corners as the sound gets muddled). The food was decent and not terribly expensive. Great place to take a date. $90 for tickets + $60 for food and drink for two. Felt like I got a good deal.

    Still Has The Fastball

by Slouch on 10/21/17Birchmere - Alexandria

Nick Lowe came out rocking. It was a return of 'The Basher'. With Gringo Starr and the rest of Los Straightjackets he could put a little punch into songs like 'Tokyo Bay', 'I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock And Roll)', 'Cruel To Be Kind', and more. Also loved the Rock Star preening with the guitar. He was a little sterile with the crowd- no stories. But we pretty much came to hear him play. The mini-set with Los Straightjackets was excellent. Loved 'Itchy', 'Mosquito', and 'Pacifica'. Also loved them promoting their 'neuvo disco' in Spanish to the crowd. And those green Riddler suits. Killed. Perfect backing band for Nick Lowe. Wish he would have cut back on a few of the slower numbers and put in 'Switch Box Susan' and 'Born Fighter', but I can understand the need for balance. Got a T-shirt for the swag collection. Would have liked a little more variety there. Got a shot of the playlist. Special note: Nick came out for two, yes TWO, encores, one scripted, and one for the boisterous crowd- 'Alison'. A heart wrenching version. I highly endorse catching him on this tour. He is killing it.

    great night

by jgiants86 on 10/25/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

As I usually gravitate to some loud, screaming guitar rock or blues, I really enjoyed the show. We also ran into Nick on the street a few hours prior to the show and found him to be a really sweet guy, very gracious and took pictures with us. Any fan of rock and roll should know Nick Lowe and his many contributions to rock and roll.

    Like seeing an old friend.

by DerB6 on 10/25/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Josh Rouse was very good- we'd never seen him before, but his music was well-done and enjoyable. We've been fans of Nick Lowe's songs for years, both performed by him and other artists. This show was very informal and had a friendly feel to it, like seeing an old friend, even though he had never performed in Knoxville before. Most of the songs were unfamiliar to us but very listenable and enjoyable. Nick's patter between songs was warm and funny.

    From familiar to fantastic

by RadioRadio on 10/25/16U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Nick Lowe's performance was a huge surprise. A gift. Not only was his voice in top form, and his guitar accompaniment very well thought out (for fullness), AND not only was he charming as he could possibly be, but his performance provided the rarest of effects: Connection. My companion and I thought he was performing for only us; every person we talked to thought the same thing - that Nick was singing directly to them. How did he do that? And by the way, what a pleasure to hear the great evolution of composition he has accomplished. His early familiar work held up well, but the lush, richly chordal, melodically-ambitious, crooning, desiring, searching, yearning, harmony-defying, darkly recollecting, and ultimately resigning later work was a wonder to behold. What a gift, he was. Thank you Mr. Lowe.
