Nick Cave on Tour

In a career that's lasted more than 40 years, indie rock elder statesman Nick Cave is renowned as a dynamic performer, his stentorian voice something between gothic storyteller, revival preacher and punk poet. Cave is also a fascinating speaker, vacillating between incisive and cryptic, deep and hilarious. Conversations With Nick Cave is an intimate night with the author/composer/post-punk hero, featuring performances of his decades-deep catalog alongside an unscripted, unrehearsed and unpredictable Q&A with the audience.

Nick Cave in Concert

The shadow of the gothically inclined punk-poet Nick Cave looms large over the history of independent rock. Born in Victoria, Australia, in 1957, his life was transformed by the first wave of Aussie punk bands like Radio Birdman and the Saints. He would soon be leading its gloomy, art-damaged second generation. As the leader of The Birthday Party, Cave and his band would release three albums — The Birthday Party, Prayers on Fire and Junkyard — between 1980 and 1982, dragging punk through rockabilly, jazz, blues, Captain Beefheart, French poetry and Southern Gothic literature. They broke up in 1983, leaving generations of goth-rock, art-rock and blues-rock bands in their wake. In 1984, he formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a band whose vivid narratives and art-rock bluster have carried them through 16 studio albums. In that time, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds appeared in Wim Wenders' acclaimed film Wings of Desire, were covered by both Johnny Cash and Metallica and had "O Children" used in 2010's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Their documentary film, One More Time With Feeling, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Music Film. Cave also led punk-blues band Grinderman for two critically acclaimed LPs. Alongside collaborator Warren Ellis, Cave has been a prolific composer of film music, creating the soundtracks to The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, Hell or High Water, War Machine, Wind River and more. A true polymath, Cave has published two novels and has written screenplays (2005's The Proposition and 2011's Lawless). In 2017 he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia.

    Nick Cave Conversations

by MStC on 10/17/19Moore Theatre - Seattle

This was a fabulous event; part testimony, part conversation, part music. It really made me aware of the fact that much of what draws me to live music events is being involved with a group of people (the audience) that shares similar interests. What a unique format!

Love NC, but show lacked depth. I was disappointed. I give him lots of credit for trying something different though.

One of my best Nick Cave experiences in last 30 years.

by BBB Stagger on 10/1/19Convocation Hall - Toronto

I saw Nick live a few dozen times, going all way back to Ljubljana 1990 and he is one only artist that gets better with every performance. I am always worried how is he going to top that last one and he never disappoint.

    Broken city

by Jeff C on 10/1/19Convocation Hall - Toronto

Who knew that going into Conversations With Nick Cave, the night would turn into a lathe grief counselling session. I thought I was the only one who would speak of my losses and ask him how he got through his, but so many of us need his words. The music was beyond exceptional, his humour eased us into speaking in front of such a large group. And his words of kindness left us feeling like we all belong to him, not the other way around. I wouldn’t call this a performance, it was exactly as he named the series, conversations

The evening was wonderfully intimate, as per usual, not too many people. Nick's presence washes over me in a deeply connected way. He humbly presents himself as an ordinary guy.

    Brilliant evening!

by wordmyer on 4/13/15Florence Gould Hall at FIAF - New York

Nick Cave never disappoints no matter what type of performance. One of the last of a dying breed of multi-talented writers, performers, singer/songwriters. The man has talent, intelligence, charisma and an ironic sense of humor...all wrapped up in humility. Brilliant!

Nick Cave Swing and a Miss

by SteveMarq on 4/11/15Grauman's Egyptian Theatre - Los Angeles

The Faithful came to Nick Cave's book reading, but it was a miss. Nick gave a good reading from his new book which was entertaining, but at $76 dollars a pop for the event, it was a bust. You didn't get a book in the deal. The event could have sold books for signing, but Nick didn't sign. Other book events with celebrities throw in the book and sign. He was out the door. Event started with technical glitches, Q&A was so disorganized. The moderator was boring and didn't engage Nick to bring anything out, or lead the Q&A. The audience asked such lame questions which Nick couldn't or didn't want to answer. BETTER TO PAY $76 TO SEE HIM IN CONCERT. Book sounds very interesting though.

Nick Cave sells books on Hollywood Blvd.

by hhillsbill on 4/11/15Grauman's Egyptian Theatre - Los Angeles

Somewhat disappointed in the presentation Mr Cave gave at the Egyption. It was quite disorganized and audio problems prevailed throughout the night. But the real disappointment was that the book he was selling was not even available to buy at the venue. As he explained you had to buy it at his online shop only. I've never been to a book reading where the book is not available to purchase. But the good news was that Mr Cave was entertaining, telling stories, reading passages and even braving question from the fans. A mixed review, some good, some bad, kind of like the world Nick writes about.

    Brilliant as always!!

by voicewriter on 9/23/14Town Hall - New York

A very special night with the one and only Nick Cave. First, the movie is brilliant! Shows a side of Nick that we don't get to see often. He's actually human! And then to prove it, he came out and answered questions from the audience and on Twitter with a lot of candidness and humor, crooning some of his ballads on his piano between questions. Actually did Mercy Seat -- NOT a ballad -- but was haunting and beautiful. A splendid evening overall. Of course, not quite the same as seeing him with the Bad Seeds, writhing all over the stage, screaming and growling -- which is the way I prefer Mr. Cave -- but this was very special and intimate, and almost as satisfying as a full-fledged concert. Don't know that I can say try to get to see this, because he is only doing this with the release of his movie. Nick Cave, can't be more enamored with him than I am.

20,000 Days of Nick, let there be 20,000 more!

by sef125 on 9/23/14Town Hall - New York

It was an amazing experience seeing this fantastic movie, hearing from Nick about his creative process, and seeing him swap funny stories with his collaborator, Warren Ellis. The movie was only topped with a QA session intertwined with Nick playing songs on the piano. It was a memorable night, not one to be forgotten.

Great performance but the Q & A sucked

by Anonymous on 9/23/14Town Hall - New York

Film was great and as expected Nick Cave was amazing. BUT the Q & A was a terrible format and interrupted the flow of Cave's solo performance. Plus all of the questions asked by the audience were ridiculously simple. In my opinion, a complete waste of time. The Q & A should have been before or after Nick Cave's solo performance.

    Amazing Experience

by JewishBradPitt on 8/7/14Florence Gould Hall at FIAF - New York

I don't typically write reviews, but between The Bad Seeds' electrifying concerts at Prospect Park and Hammerstein Ballroom and this intimate evening with Cave at Florence Gould Hall, I felt I had to give praise where praise was due. Cave killed it at both NYC concerts - providing an extremely intense and unforgettable experience, commanding the stage with the fervor of a televangelist. He switched roles between loverman, psychopath and surrealist storyteller seamlessly, pouring energy and passion into each word sung (or shouted). Additionally, each setlist felt unique enough that attending two consecutive nights did not seem tedious. The 20,000 Days on Earth screening and subsequent Q and A was icing on the cake. This excellent film - which releases in September - works on multiple levels, from a thorough biography of Cave to a nonfiction noir complete with hardboiled voiceover. The concert scenes captured the spellbinding effect Cave has over his audience. But two aspects stand out above all else: 20,000 Days on Earth is a thought-provoking examination of memory, one that is not afraid to be very (darkly) funny. After the movie, Cave came out to answer questions from the audience and perform some piano ballads. Indeed, he possesses a sharp wit, a strong voice, and a truly remarkable suit. While I didn't always get the impression Cave enjoyed this little interrogation, I guess I shouldn't have expected too much warmth from someone who wrote "O'Malley's Bar" and "Stagger Lee". That said, Cave was kind enough to play nine songs, including "No More Shall We Part" - a tune he hadn't rehearsed "for ten years" - for a shy woman in the audience who had written the title on a sheet of paper. He also responded to my request to play something from "The Boatman's Call" humorously: "Which one was that again? The album with the black and white cover, looks pretty serious?"
