About

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1983, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are one of the most critically acclaimed post-punk bands of the last 30 years. Following the end of their previous group, the Birthday Party, singer-songwriter Cave and drummer Mick Harvey began the Bad Seeds. Initially joined by Barry Adamson on bass and Blixa Bargeld on guitar, the band has seen a number of personnel changes over the years with the one constant being the creative force of Cave himself.
Exploring the themes of love and religion, the band’s debut album, From Her to Eternity, was released in 1984. Featuring a cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “In the Ghetto,” presented in the band’s inimitable style, the record showcased the deep impact of Cave’s baritone voice. Quickly following second album, The Firstborn is Dead, third release Kicking Against the Pricks saw the band first find fame in the UK and Ireland. Critics also began to sit up and take notice, with Cave’s prose-like approach to songwriting bringing welcome comparisons with Leonard Cohen. This narrative style was seen again on 1986’s Your Funeral…My Trial, before the beginning of a two year break from recording for the band.
Four more albums were released in the early ‘90s in addition to the band making a range of high-profile US festival appearances. The album Murder Ballads, released in 1996, became a critical success for the Bad Seeds and saw songwriter Cave explore two of his favorite themes: death and violence. The album featured vocals from Kylie Minogue on the single, “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” and the success of the song helped make Murder Ballads the band’s best -selling album so far. 1998 saw the release of No More Shall We Part, with further albums Nocturama and Abbatoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus being released in the early ‘00s.
Following a number of sell out tour dates in 2005 and 2006, Nick Cave’s musical achievements and creative contribution saw him inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall of Fame. Not for the first time in his career, Cave then moved from music to movies, writing both the screenplay and soundtrack for John Hillcoat’s 2012 film, Lawless. Early 2013 saw the release of Push the Sky Away; the band’s first output in nearly five years, it was widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike.

    Nick Cave is legendary.

by MorellaDeville on 3/19/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I have been swooning for 20 years. This was my third time to see Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and as always, they are literally breathtaking. The music is powerful and lyrics make you think, Nick Cave & TBS embody everything that music should be but unfortunately rarely is. An amazing band heard in a venue that was made for music..you can't ask for anything more from a concert experience.

The Bad Seeds paint Nashville with a dark brush

    by jtm133 on 3/18/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Nick Cave stalked the front of the stage like a syphylittic panther, snarling, spitting, spewing venomous love. He would lean into the audience, grab hands and sprawl backwards over the monitors. The historic Ryman had its doors blown off by the Bad Seeds who would alternate serene quiet with bombastic thunder in the space of the same song.

    Nick Cave was Awesome

    by KOR7578 on 3/18/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I had seen the set lists for the previous shows on the tour and was a bit concerned that the majority of what we would hear was then new album. I was wrong. Nick was in rare form and played 4 songs from his new album before launching into an awesome selection of songs from the past 20+ years. Great show...Great venue.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

    by Chicks63 on 3/18/13Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

He was amazing live. Brilliant mix of songs and excellent sound quality. The band is really incredible. He sang a couple of my favorites for which I'm grateful; God is in the House and Stagger Lee. His live Stagger Lee was the single greatest live performance I've ever witnessed. The whole show was riveting. His greatness as an artist and performer were proven for me.

    Wow

by bunnyman on 3/17/13McFarlin Auditorium - Dallas

I don't own any Nick Cave cds but I did want to see them in concert and I was blown away. Nick has an incredible energy dancing around and jumping back and forth to the piano. He even let everyone crowd the stage and the aisles to get closer to the stage.

Nick Cave's performance was absolutely phenomenal! After rushing the stage, the show became what I had hoped for, an intimate experience with a performer I have been wanting to see for over 20 years. The venue sound was great, however, it was not one I would have chosen for him.

Intensely fantastic show... at a bad venue

    by gorgo99 on 3/17/13McFarlin Auditorium - Dallas

Nick and his band were fantastic, pulling out mostly songs from his early catalog. I was surprised that they skipped over the past 6 or so albums, except for the songs they played from the new one. Nick worked the crowd like the pro that he is, with the occasional improv bits. The downside to this show was the McFarlin Auditorium, which I'd be hard pressed to go to ever again. The seats are designed for children, and my 6'5" frame was very uncomfortable in them the whole time. The acoustics were awful, too. If I didn't know the songs as well as I do, I'd have had a hard time following the show.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds; AAAAA+++++

by Ridgerunnierre on 3/16/13McFarlin Auditorium - Dallas

The standard bar of live rock shows has been raised. From the amazing sound quality to the frantic-Cavedance, this show was an explosion of rock theater at its best. Cave's powerful vocals, easy crowd-play, and storytelling sensibilities carried the crowd up, out and beyond...not your typical rock show! Coupled with the ever-spot-on Bad Seeds' superb blend of textures and punctuations, their just-subsurface thunder-like bottom end, a sound system that promoted each nuance and the tight, near epileptic siezure-inducing light show and wrap it all together in McFarlin's acoustic sweet for a quality show SMU should rightly be proud to have hosted. Warren Ellis (as heard from one attendee) was "Ian Anderson with a fiddle." Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds delivered pure poetical performance perfection.

    The Eternal Nick Cave!!!

    by austex78745 on 3/16/13McFarlin Auditorium - Dallas

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are the kind of band with a very devoted following, and it's been a LONG time since they've toured the US. The setlist was a great mix from the new album, and quiet and loud fan favorites. Nick Cave KNOWS how to put on a show, and really cares about the audience enjoying the experience. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!! Once in a lifetime experience.
