Next To Normal Tickets

Although overall the performance was overwelming, I found it difficult to understand Diana when she sang. I almost came to the point of cringing every time Alice Ripley sang. All the other main characters' voices were amazing. I could never figure out if Diana's voice was suppose to come across this way due to her mental illness. For me, it ruined the play and I went away disappointed. I was really looking forward to seeing Alice Ripley perform this part that she won the Tony Award in 2009.

We went to see Next to Normal with not much background information intentionally. It has been awhile since we have been surprised by a musical and wanted the full impact of a fresh performance. Next to Normal succeeded on many levels. The story is the major selling point of this production. Rather than a rehashed tired story being retold, this is a brand new and modern storyline. In it's essence the story is about a family struggling to confront demons that have been haunting them for awhile. Relating to real problems gives the story the connection missing from so many recent storylines. No wonder the Pulitzer Prize was awarded. The set is technologically advanced while retaining a simple beauty. Lights and color interact seamlessly with the story line. Musically the production uses modern lyrics and melodies in a compelling fashion. The melodies are original but not trite. Lyrically the words flow from the characters effortlessly. The combination of all the elements-story, set and music- make this a fresh musical that Broadway has been missing for some time. We completely enjoyed Next To Normal.

Acting and music was INCREDIBLE!! I had a great time, really enjoyed the show! I purchased a LOT of the music on ITUNES the day!
