The Newport Jazz Festival was phenomenal! We had a terrific time in Fort Adams Park. What was good? The music of course----Maria, Wynton, Dave B, Herbie, Amal, Chick---and some groups we weren't familiar with--Brass, Bows and Beats and Latin Jazz. The venue was beautiful, the boats on the water, space for all, the different stages for when we needed a break. Also good--and important, too--lots of services--plenty of johns that amazingly stayed pretty clean--the watering station (no limits on water!!)--the shade tents. We thought that the food offerings were good, with lots of healthy choices to balance out the grease. The prices seemed fair, too. The eco-friendly serving plates and the recycling bins were important statements without being intrusive. The crafters were interesting, varied and unique. It was nice that there were some kid friendly activities, too. What could be improved? There was a list of rules/restrictions published on the web site--and that we followed--but many others didn't. Perhaps those rules need to be published and reiterated more often in different ways. After waiting at the gate to get in, only to be held up by the person in front of us with 10 soda bottles filled with booze was disconcerting. We (100's of us in that line) had to wait while this person was searched, etc. She needed to be pulled aside, rather than make the remainder of us wait longer. Although it was clear that umbrellas, tents, awnings, etc. would not be allowed--plenty of people broke that rule so that those with those particular items were allowed to set up in the back of the venue--but of course, there were others who ignored that and had to be reminded throughout the day on Sunday to lower their umbrellas, etc. before the music. There are always people who feel that the rules are for someone else....but perhaps a firmer stand on that would make it less frustrating for those of us who would have liked to have an awning, but were considerate of others, and did not bring it.
