About

Founded in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival® was the first jazz festival in America, and has been host to numerous legendary  performances by iconic figures and contemporary geniuses. The festival continues to present musicians who follow the traditions and modern growth of New Orleans, swing, bebop and modal.  The event is a production of Newport Festivals Foundation, Inc. and currently is held over the course of three days at two of Newport's historic landmarks: the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino and Fort Adams State Park.

    So much fun!

by digitron on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Newport Jazz Festival is an awesome experience! The entire day is full of activities and fun, and of course, good music. Parking in Newport and taking a water taxi to Fort Adams adds to the experience. There is so much to do, crafts, music, good food. With one ticket, you can simply walk to the any of the three stages, featuring great musician and Jazz legends. It's totally worth every penny...

    Once again Jamie was great.

by MMoe on 8/9/10The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Jamie is to talented. He said he wanted to be a tenth of Harry Connick Jr.. Well Jamie you are a 100% able to show up in the same room with him and command the same respect. You are able to capture and appeal to the young and old. Thank You for yet again a show I will never forget. .

    Newport Jazz - Sat., August, 7, 2010

by TFBeaver on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

On balance one of the best places to see/hear the best in live straight ahead jazz. Perhaps the only issue is that there's so much talent and top shelf performances that it's hard to take in everything. Overlapping performance schedules on the three stages had us running around all afternoon. When you think of it...it was a nice problem to have...too much great music!!! I don't like the reserved seating set up at center stage at the Fort Stage. We much prefer the way it used to be with come early and get a good spot for the afternoon.

    Lisa Fischer was the dessert

by girlfriendsofjazz on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

What a great way to end the festival. For those of you who had to leave early to beat traffic etc.... you missed a wonderful ending to the festival. Lisa Fischer"s singing Italia with Chris Botti was an emotional encore.

    Best. Sunday. Jazzfest. Ever.

by CCinCT on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Wtinessing the great Dave Brubeck, at 90 years of age, appear onstage with Wynton Marsalis and play "Blues for Newport", which Brubeck wrote himself for Newport, was an extraordinary musical moment. Herbie Hancock and Chris Botti's performances were also uniquely inspiring. It was HOT in the sun, but under the umbrella there was a beautiful breeze, and it was the perfect setting and perfect weather for the event. Unfortunately, they ran out of programs (have been coming to this event for several years, and they always run out of programs - here's a tip: PRINT MORE).

    Better Each Year

by PCM99 on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

An amazing weekend. It is always great when the weather co-operates also. Have been to this festival before and this was one of the strongest line-ups and best performances to date. No matter what stage you wer at the performances were outstanding. The set-up of one stage inside the Fort was a little disruptive to the sound at the main stage. Sometimes could hear that performance going on.

    Great range of artists

by jjam42 on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Absolutely the nest Newport Jazz Festival in years. Sensational headliner artists and great new comers: Darcy James and Brass Ecstasy. Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Christian, Hynes, Herbie Hancock, all blew everyone away. and then evenings with Jamie Cullum and Chris Botti. And of course George Wein and his all stars prove that jazz always works together. An amazing venue and an amazing group of artists with a wide range of focal instruments: Anat Cohen on the clarinet, all of the trumpets and for me a first: jazz french horn, jazz tuba, jazz bells, violins, viola and cello. Can't wait for next year!!!

The music was stunning, the weather was stunning! Wonderful line up this year and we had a glorious time. A couple of things that would have made it perfect: PLEASE produce a program booklet with background info on all the artists. Part of the really exciting thing about a festival like this is the opportunity to hear new musicians, but there was no information available at the festival to read about who they were and their music. That was really diappointing. Also confusing on Sunday was that the first performers at the main stage finished earlier than scheduled, and then subsequently all performers began and ended 20 minutes AHEAD of schedule. This was a problem for people who scheduled out going to other stages with the intent of catching at least some of the front or back end of the main stage performace. If you publish a schedule, stick to it, please. More shuttle buses at the end of Sunday's lineup would have avoided a lot of frustration for festival goers. Thanks for the great weekend!

    Fabulous!

by AvidListener on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

As always, the Jazz Festival at Newport was unforgettable. One set better than the next. I was disappointed to see and experience the beer and wine tent. I am sure you made a boatload of cash, but I will pay ten more dollars a day if you will do away with it.

    Newport Jazz was Awesome

by Jazziegirls on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

The Newport Jazz Festival was phenomenal! We had a terrific time in Fort Adams Park. What was good? The music of course----Maria, Wynton, Dave B, Herbie, Amal, Chick---and some groups we weren't familiar with--Brass, Bows and Beats and Latin Jazz. The venue was beautiful, the boats on the water, space for all, the different stages for when we needed a break. Also good--and important, too--lots of services--plenty of johns that amazingly stayed pretty clean--the watering station (no limits on water!!)--the shade tents. We thought that the food offerings were good, with lots of healthy choices to balance out the grease. The prices seemed fair, too. The eco-friendly serving plates and the recycling bins were important statements without being intrusive. The crafters were interesting, varied and unique. It was nice that there were some kid friendly activities, too. What could be improved? There was a list of rules/restrictions published on the web site--and that we followed--but many others didn't. Perhaps those rules need to be published and reiterated more often in different ways. After waiting at the gate to get in, only to be held up by the person in front of us with 10 soda bottles filled with booze was disconcerting. We (100's of us in that line) had to wait while this person was searched, etc. She needed to be pulled aside, rather than make the remainder of us wait longer. Although it was clear that umbrellas, tents, awnings, etc. would not be allowed--plenty of people broke that rule so that those with those particular items were allowed to set up in the back of the venue--but of course, there were others who ignored that and had to be reminded throughout the day on Sunday to lower their umbrellas, etc. before the music. There are always people who feel that the rules are for someone else....but perhaps a firmer stand on that would make it less frustrating for those of us who would have liked to have an awning, but were considerate of others, and did not bring it.

    Jazz-tastic

by CurtDM on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Went to the Newport Jazz Festival yesterday: Wynton Marsalis, Arturo O'Farril, Herbie Hancock and more. It was pure bliss. Kurt Vonnegut once said that, if there was a God, the best evidence of God's existence was music, especially that great American music called jazz. If Vonnegut had been there yesterday he would have been a believer. What a great day. But what's with Chris Botti on the program? Is this really jazz -- or just pap? Still, a jazz-tastic day.

A day to carry you through the rest of the year...

by JoanfromJazzVille on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

What 's not to love? The air is filled with Jazz, the the horizon with puffy clouds and boats. You've brought an elegant picnic. And George Wein is in the house! Lu HU-HUVE the festival. Only one critique, which I'm sure you've heard from others Not enough mention was made ( signs & on the programs) about moving the stage inside the fort, so lots of us missed it,. I missed the George Wein All Stars because went 'up the hill' to the Quad stage thinking it was the Fort stage. Didn't find out about the inside the fort access until it was too late. I'll know better next year! Thanks for a wonderful event!

    Wonderful weekend of Jazz

by Sugoad on 8/9/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

This was our second NewPort Jazz festival and we loved every minute of it. We arrived in Newport and parked on a side street and walked down to the water taxi to get to the park. The first day we arrived around three and stayed until the last show. The views are beautiful, food is tasty and not too expensive. We enjoyed grilled pizza and lemon ices. The walk way to the pier was nice and being able to have a glass of wine or beer added to the atmosphere. You bring your own chairs and as much stuff that you need except alcohol which is also a plus. We had a great seats the second day because we parked ourselves in front of the sidewalks so we could get around easily and not have to climb over people to get to our spot. The music was super and the artist are gracious and considerate. They seem genuinely happy to be there.

    Counterpoint: Kelly and Cullum

by Roby22 on 8/8/10The International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino - Newport

Grace Kelly and Jamie Cullum make an interesting comparison: Kelly is all technical competence without much of a stage presence; it may come later as it did with Diana Krall, but not here, not yet. Cullum has fantastic stage presence but runs the risk that his cleverness will overwhelm the full development of his talent. He has the talent to be a heavyweight but he has to decide what he really wants out of his artistic abilities. But it was a good combination - two Cullum-like personalities would have been too much; two Kellys might have become a snoozer during the main act. Both playlists were solid and Cullum generated plenty of energy. The setting, as always, was great, with perfect cooperation from the weather. The Casino, more than the Fort, harks back to the classic days of the Newport Jazz Festival. A Saturday night performance at the former as well? Think about it George.

    Jamie Cullum

by lisathefit on 8/8/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

He did not disappoint, he jumped off the piano not once, but TWICE! What great energy he has! He had the whole crowd on their feet, and we all did a group jump! Fantastic show, great artist.

Best was Anat Cohen, next Maria Schneider's orchestra, next the Freedom Band, then the Berklee group, then Lage. Anat was very exciting, virtuoso, quick tempos. Schnei ders tunes were nice, great soloists, esp trumpet ballad. Freedom band was tight, as was Berklee (esp considering their youth). Lage is a vituoso, but his style (banjo music) has no appeal for me.

    CareFusion Jazz Fest (Newport)

by BariSaxMan on 8/8/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Sat, 8/7 only. Virgin voyage to the Newport fest. Been to many other festivals and musical performances all over the Northeast. Performed at many too. Loved it all. Relaxed atmosphere. Great talent. And the beautiful weather didn't hurt either. I may go back next year and maybe for both days.

    Newport Jazz Fest

by Jazzin59 on 8/8/10Fort Adams State Park - Newport

Beautiful weather, fantastic lineup with fantastic music. George Wein again provided a great cross-section of talent to appeal to a broad spectrum of music fans, not just jazz fanatics.
