New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams, were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships—most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs—including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Twelve players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, Mike Richter, Vic Hadfield, Henrik Lundqvist and Wayne Gretzky. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Highly recommend seeing the Ice Hockey at MSG. Being from Australia, the kids & I didn’t know what to expect but were super impressed by the atmosphere generated by a crowd of 18k Rangers Fans. The entertainment both on the ice & during the breaks kept us entertained for the duration.

  • Event was quite ok

by Pi on 12/9/23Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Unfortunately, when I bought my ticket it wasn't described that the view was restricted, which I thought was a shame and the event wasn't perfect because of that! Unfortunately you couldn't see the video cube from the seats, there were monitors but they showed something else than on the cube. That was a great pity.

This was my first hockey game and it was an electric environment! The facility was amazing, the fans were so cool, it was a blast! My sister loved it so much, she wanted to get season tickets. (And we're from OK/AR) If you get a chance to attend a game, I would definitely do it!

Been to see them twice while in NY and both times whether they win or lose, the atmosphere was electric. From start to finish you are kept entertained whether by the game or by spectator involvement, music, competitions. Can't wait to come back and see again.
