New York Knicks History

The Knicks were established in 1946 and were one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.

The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.

Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.

The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Anthony's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.

The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly-acquired point guard Jalen Brunson. The Knicks most recently reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2025 NBA playoffs, marking their first appearance in the conference finals since the 1999-2000 season.

Good venue, helpful staff and felt safe. Clean facilities with a wide Choice of food and drink along with merchandise. Would recommend anyone to go and see a game for the experience and atmosphere. It’s not just seeing the game but the entertainment from start to finish.

  • Very smooth entry with use of Google wallet app. Good seats

Use of garden seating map on Ticketmaster web site ensured a good view of the game. IFi have any criticisms it would be the constant musical blares over the loudspeakers that detracts from the beauty of the sport that doesnt need the inducement.

by tamd22 on 11/30/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Ticketmaster sent me thorough information about the event. The information included everything I needed to know before I arrived at the Madison Square Garden for the Knicks game. Information (with diagrams included) about which gate I needed to enter was helpful since I have Clear. There was a special entrance for people who have Clear. The seats were AMAZING!!! The game and the entertainment throughout the game were spectacular. I would highly recommend purchasing tickets through Ticketmaster.

  • Knicks tix

by Jst on 11/28/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Pole next to my seat on bridge seat at msg does infringe on room as right next to seat. This seat should say that at time of purchase or be discounted.

  • Unique experience

Such a nice event. We don’t have this in The Netherlands. Crew that works at Madison Square Garden could be better.

  • More fun than a party!

by Anushka on 11/28/22Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve never been a sports lover so when my husband booked us tickets to a Knicks Game on our holiday, I can’t say I was super excited about it. But I went anyway and I’m SO glad I did! The whole experience was probably one of the highlights of our trip! The game was positively thrilling and kept me on my toes throughout. Never a dull moment with everyone in the audience being involved - lots of great music, dancing, celebrities, performances, free merch and contests for the audience to participate in. The atmosphere was positively electric and if we lived in the U.S, I’d have my own season ticket if I could! Sports in England tend to feel a lot like a boy’s club and can be quite a boring experience if you don’t understand the rules of the game and aren’t invested. However, sports in the U.S are by far superior! There was something for everyone to be involved with, no matter what your age or gender was. I’d go to a Knick’s Game on a girls night and have just as much fun as I did with my husband. Highly, highly recommend! Wish I could do it all over again!

Greatest arena in the world is correct. Overall experience was great. The pregame, the staff, the game itself. I will be returning one day with my boys.
