New York Knicks History
The Knicks were established in 1946 and were one of the founding members of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA after merging with the National Basketball League in 1949. The Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two original NBA teams still located in their original cities.
The Knicks saw early success, advancing to the NBA Finals in three consecutive years from 1950 to 1953. They lost all three series, twice to the Minneapolis Lakers and once to the Rochester Royals. The franchise’s next successful era began in the late '60s, under the tutelage of head coach Red Holzman. They won 54 games in Holzman's first full season as head coach in the 1968–69 season, then improved to 60 wins the following year. The Knicks won their first NBA Championship in 1970, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. Holzman won Coach of the Year, while center Willis Reed won NBA MVP and Finals MVP.
Holzman and Reed led the Knicks back to the finals in two of the next three seasons, facing the Lakers both times. They split those two series, winning their second championship in the 1972–73 season.
The Knicks did not experience success again until the '90s, when future Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing led them back to the NBA Finals in 1993–94 and 1998–99. They lost both series, first in seven games to the Houston Rockets, then in five games to the San Antonio Spurs.
The Knicks traded for star Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in 2011. He proved to be an elite scorer, but team success eluded the Knicks. They made it to the playoffs three times in Anthony's seven-year tenure with the team, winning one series in 2013.
The Knicks reached the playoffs once again during the 2020–21 season, reinvigorated by power forward Julius Randle, who was awarded the NBA’s Most Improved Player distinction in 2021, and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2023 with the additional firepower of newly-acquired point guard Jalen Brunson. The Knicks most recently reached the Eastern Conference Finals in the 2025 NBA playoffs, marking their first appearance in the conference finals since the 1999-2000 season.

Just phenomenal event! Great organization, incredible atmosphere
I come from Italy and I've seen a wonderful show, but I'm surprised that the game came after than that. However, a wonderful experience
Staff from entrance to exit pleasant, informative & helpful.
Quick entry from the 7ave entrance. Security is always tight which is appreciated. The only issues I had were finding elevators to get to my seats. Once I got to my seats, it was like watching the game through a fishbowl. It’s in between the top section and the next floor. There are beams and a security glass in front of you. There is a small monitor to the right of the row but it left a lot to be desired. The usher was sitting patrons in the wrong seats so it became a distraction. I am a lifelong Knicks fan but if affordable and accessible seats aren’t available, I’ll stay home and watch the game there.
I’ve attended this event for the past 4 years since being a season ticket holder. Always look forward to them especially when bringing the whole family. Every year the fan level experience seemed to elevate from decor, to notable Knicks alumni walking around and taking photos with fans, to the programming. This year felt
Great show, MSG is unbelievable! The vibes the fans . New York is the best place to be at for sure !
The Energy of the Mecca and the new season is utopian
Great tip off. i could attend a 1000 of these. and i live right on 43 St. walking distance for me.
I always enjoy myself when I go to Madison Square Garden! The energy is electric. I love the Knicks! I truly had an awesome time.
Great event and family friendly! Had an amazing time! Would come back every year to the tip off event!
This was great. Brought my 2 yr old and had a blast. My only critique is they used to have face painting and activities for kids prior to the game. It would be cool if they brought that back.
Great game! It was wonderful to see the Knicks play at the Garden! The location is beautiful and is a must have experience. The Knicks staff do a great job at entertaining the crowd, with games, prizes, and musical events.
My first trip to Ny, first visit to the Garden. Can't put into words how much i enjoyed it. Stewards were helpful in helping me find my seat, the game, the entertainment, the noise ... wonderful experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
