New York Islanders History
The New York Islanders, also known as the Isles, celebrated 50 years as a franchise during the 2022-2023 season. The New York Islanders took the ice for the first time in 1972 and forged one of sports' greatest dynasties less than a decade after the franchise's inception. The New York Islanders are one of only two NHL teams to win four straight Stanley Cup Championships, and their legendary run of 19 straight playoff series victories remains unmatched in professional sports.
GM Bill Torrey's brilliant drafting during the 1970s stocked the Islanders roster with some of the game's greatest players. Defenseman Denis Potvin, right wing Mike Bossy, center Bryan Trottier, goaltender Billy Smith, and left wing Clark Gillies powered the dynasty and went on to the Hall of Fame. Coach Al Arbour joined Torrey and his five players in the Hall of Fame after finishing his career fourth all-time in wins. New York Islanders legends Butch Goring, Bob Nystrom, and John Tonelli are also forever enshrined on the rafters at UBS Arena.

New York Islanders at UBS Arena
Opened in 2021 as the new home of the Islanders, UBS Arena sits in Belmont Park — between Montauk and Manhattan — and is the only arena in Metro New York that was built for hockey. The New York Islanders played their first games at UBS Arena in the 2021-2022 season. The design of the arena is inspired by iconic New York landmarks, including Central Park, Grand Central Terminal, and the Park Avenue Armory. It also features the largest arena scoreboard in New York State.
The New York Islanders’ 2023–24 regular season kicks off in October at home as the Islanders face off against the Buffalo Sabres. The Islanders will participate in the 2024 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series — hosted at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — against the New York Rangers on February 18. They play their final game of the regular season at home against Metropolitan Division rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins. Here’s a list of key games to keep an eye on:

The Islanders draft party was a good time. The drive to get there wasnt so good though. it took 2 and a half hours from central Jersey but as a fan it was worth it. I can write about all the positives all night but there is one negative that stands out. This is not a MAJOR isuue but should be known. my kids joined this thing called " kids club". The kids club spun a wheel that you win prizes or even Islanders tickets. Well, here comes the big downfall. The girl that was working that wheel was " cheating". she was using her fingers behind the wheel to stop it when she wanted it stopped. Ok minor stuff but not really. That is cheating kids and fans. That wheel must of spun 6,000 times that night and no tickets were handed out. What a coincidence. Well I contacted the Islanders and all I got was a runaround. Call me ....call me ...call me....why just answer my email ? Are they going to talk me into not believing what i've seen ? Well that isnt happening. I thought i'd like to share this with others and if anyone else seen this let it be known. Thats cheating and thats not cool ,especially with kids. that was supposed to be a fun time so why did I leave disgusted. Anyway the Isles put on a great show but one rotten apple had to spoil it. By the way Kids club....Thanks for the pencil after that hour wait on line. You got me .....this time only !
This was the best Draft Party I have been to for such a long time. To see all the fans waiting for that moment when Garth and Mr. Wang went up to the podium and picked our number one draft pick. The place was going crazy. The fans were hugging and clapping so hard. What a great night. A little crazy at times but it was worth it. Love the buys on the mercandise. Of course I went shopping. Got some great deals. The lines were long so you can see everyone wanted something to remember this draft party.
it was great alot of fans were there and they pick the new face of the franchise
It was free and a nice night out----very exciting night----would do again
Watching Garth Snow announce John Tavares as the Islanders number one draft pick over center ice at the Coliseum.
I enjoyed being a part of the draft pick excitement. It's something I never took an interest in before, but being there, it would have been impossible to have not been caught up in all of the enthusiasm of the fans surrounding me.
Garth Snow made everyone in the NHL wait to find out who they were going to pick with their number one pick. After hearing the name "John Tavares" as their selection, 10,000 plus fans went louder then any Islander goal scored since 1985. I am very happy with this selection, the crowds enthususiam and the progress of the organization. Hopefully soon, we can see a stanley cup brought back home where it belongs.
I was very happy to be invited to the draft with my family. My kids had a great time being able to go into the locker room and seeing all the hall of fame plaques. They were happy with the first round pick. It was nice for them to experience the draft and be able to see how it affects the team.
The Excitement was at full speed until the chaos became full bloom. No one knew what was going on. Where and how do we sit. Only a few food stands where open and the lines were a mile long. We ended up waiting to eat until we left. That was not good for your business. I hope that next time more thought will go into how to keep the fans coming back for more. We left right after the 2nd draft.
I thought it was very exciting and fun! Rate it 4 of 5. Would have liked free booze and the snacks weren't great for the VIP. The meet and greet with alumni was really cool and getting autographs.
What an excellent party to commerate the coming of John Tavares. We all sat in anticipation with our eyes glued to the screens watching the live feed of the draft in montreal. When garth snow stepped up to the podium and announced the islanders selection of john tavares, the arena went nuts. GOOD JOB GUYS!! LETS GO ISLANDERS!
Brought my son and dad out for the Draft party. It was incredible, when Garth Snow says :...John T.." the place exploded. We have been fans since 1972 and my son (13) go to hear and feel that excitement I felt as a kid, back in 1980. Hey, both my kids know the real words to the "Chicken Dance", since they could speak, loud and proud!!!! We had such a great feeling, we are on the way up! Especailly with moving up in the draft to get de Haan. That was a extra kicker for us! Seeing Bobby Ny, Trots and Jackman was a treat. We saw lots of old friends and made new ones!! Great party! Next time, we'll get together like, we'll hoist the Stanley CUP on Hempstead Turnpike!!!! Keep up the great work, we are behind you 100% Been that way since 1972. The isles are the only team we follow. Can't wait for training camp to start!!!! We're BAAAAACK!!!!!! LET"S GO ISLANDERS!!!!!!!!
Watching John Tavares a future star in the NHL get selected by the New York Islanders in their home building, Nassau Coliseum, was tremendous. Hopefully he will pan out for them and bring hockey back to the Island. It was awesome to see how happy everyone was to be there and watch history.
Lot's of excited fans! Isles need to have more of these events to get some fire back!!!
the event itself was fine, but there were entirely too many people on the floor making it extremely difficult to walk around--no fault of the team though
What a proud night to be an Islanders fan! You couldn't have asked for a better atmosphere before, during, and after the selection of John Tavares, the first pick in 2009 NHL draft!
Was a very fun event. Like winning the Stanley Cup!!
