About

New Orleans Pelicans History

The New Orleans Pelicans franchise joined the NBA in 1988 in Charlotte, North Carolina as the Hornets. They struggled until the early 1990s, when in a three-year span they assembled the young trio of Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill. With Glen Rice added to the mix, they made four playoff appearances in the 1990s, and started another successful stretch in the 1999–00 season fueled by guard Baron Davis. But after an unsuccessful bid to get a new arena, the team moved to New Orleans in 2002.

The Hornets made the playoffs each of their first two years in New Orleans, but after the third year they were forced to relocate to Oklahoma City for two seasons due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Upon returning in 2007–08, they finished 56-26 to win the Southwest Division, led by the trio of Chris Paul, David West and Tyson Chandler. In the playoffs, they beat the Dallas Mavericks in the first round before falling to the San Antonio Spurs in a seven-game conference semifinal.

Under new ownership (New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson purchased the Hornets in 2012), the team changed their name to the Pelicans. This new era was initially spearheaded by No. 1 Draft pick Anthony Davis, joined later by All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, and followed by the pairing of 2019 first overall draft pick Zion Williamson and 2020 Most Improved Player Brandon Ingram.

    Appreciate the efforts made

by visitor2 on 12/9/09New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

This was my second game to see the Hornets. I had friends from Israel who wanted to see the Kings' Israeli player. He was hurt and did not play. I appreciate all the creativity and efforts that were made to entertain the audience during the game. There is no lack of effort made by the team and the arena to involve the audience. Lots of nice honest attempts to create an entertaining experience. Good luck and continued good wishes!

    Hornets in New Orleans

by Stosh49 on 11/22/09New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

I used New Orleans Arena's will call for the first time, saving a little money in the process, and found them to be efficient and speedy. In and out of that office in under 5 minutes.

The game was awsome. This was my son and I first game at the Hive. My son could not stop talking about all the way back home to Zachary, LA. As you know was a 1 1/2 hour drive. We would love to do it again someday, when we can afford another ticket. Thanks for allowing us to be in your presence during your home game. We are with you all the way to the end!!!!!!

Floor seats at the Hornets game was awesome!!

by Smiley2043 on 11/5/09New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

The staff was kind and helpful. View was great and my guest said he had the time of his life!! Food was excelleant and beer cold. Hard to have a bad time with floor seats at mid-court when your favorite team is playing and one of your favorite All-Star players on the opposing team.

    Amazing Birthday Celebration!!!!!!

by Barriquered on 11/2/09New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

I would like to thank everyone involved in the Hornets home opener. I took my 11 son and 5 of friends to the game. It was his 11th birthday, and he had a blast. We arrived early to enjoy the pregame festivities and stayed to the end to do the after game free throws. The entetainment was awesome too. The boys really enjoyed themselves. I can't even begin to explain how exciting the game was. There was never a dull moment. Thanks again to all of you for putting together a wonderful night of family/ friend fun.

by Nola9 on 11/2/09New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

The game was great! Especially since the Hornets won!. I always enjoy going to the Hornets game. It is fun and there is no bad seat in the house. The half time show (Southern University Band) was fantastic as well as the Used to Bees...Go HORNETS!

The in-game presentation was way too much. There were no pauses between songs during the game. The fans never got a chance to enjoy the game, because there was always someone telling us to clap, make noise, chant, stand up, dance, etc. The music is generic, the same tired old samples that they use in every other culture-less NBA arena. In New Orleans it's a tragedy that they can't get some local music in there.
