About

New Orleans Pelicans History

The New Orleans Pelicans franchise joined the NBA in 1988 in Charlotte, North Carolina as the Hornets. They struggled until the early 1990s, when in a three-year span they assembled the young trio of Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill. With Glen Rice added to the mix, they made four playoff appearances in the 1990s, and started another successful stretch in the 1999–00 season fueled by guard Baron Davis. But after an unsuccessful bid to get a new arena, the team moved to New Orleans in 2002.

The Hornets made the playoffs each of their first two years in New Orleans, but after the third year they were forced to relocate to Oklahoma City for two seasons due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Upon returning in 2007–08, they finished 56-26 to win the Southwest Division, led by the trio of Chris Paul, David West and Tyson Chandler. In the playoffs, they beat the Dallas Mavericks in the first round before falling to the San Antonio Spurs in a seven-game conference semifinal.

Under new ownership (New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson purchased the Hornets in 2012), the team changed their name to the Pelicans. This new era was initially spearheaded by No. 1 Draft pick Anthony Davis, joined later by All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins, and followed by the pairing of 2019 first overall draft pick Zion Williamson and 2020 Most Improved Player Brandon Ingram.

    Great Family Event

by ashleygayle87 on 2/6/10New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

This was my first Hornets game and I had a blast wtih my family. My 8 year old niece had a blast cheering on the Hornets and even though they didn't win, they still made sure to put on a great show!! They have tons of time out shows, and a one of a kind half time show. Last night was Black Violen, two men playing a violen to rap music and it got the crowd wanting to dance in the isle! They had tons of free events for kids, such as face painting, Hornet's fake tattoos, balloon animals, and characatures. Even though our seats where in the balcony, we had a great view ( I added a picture)! It was a great night to spend with my family!

    Fun but too hot!

by HesterB on 1/11/10New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

We had a really good time but our friends and family tickets were at the TOP ROW!!! The arena was not nearly full and it seems that we could have had better seats. The arena was extremely hot, temperature wise. We were all sweating and uncomfortable. Hugo is adorable and we loved his Elvis costume and dance moves. Very entertaining overall...just turn down the heat and save some money!

I brought my kids on a friday (not a school night) and they had a really good time along w/ myself & wife. Easy ticket purchase (friends and family), easy and affordable parking, daughter got to shoot a free throw after game, all 4 of us ate (friends & family), enjoyed a great NBA game for 4 w/ total cost of 131.00 (not counting gas to and from). Cannot beat it.

Hornets pull out win at the end

by MaisonBienvenue on 1/3/10New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

I wasn't sure if my seats in section 317 row 6 would be good ones being so far off the court. They were decent for $35. I would rather get higher seats than sit end court, much better view. The Hornet fans are so into the game which makes it so much fun. My daughters 9 and 12 years old had a blast too.

We had a great time at the Hornets v. Nuggets game. It was good for the Hornets to get back on the winning track. We didn't like being up so high, and talking about getting season tickets next year.

    Spectacular Hornets

by Lawjo on 12/19/09New Orleans Arena - New Orleans

The game began with a bang and ended with the Hornets on top. The game was a showcase for Chris Paul (CP3) and his unwillingness to let his team fail. CP3 scored 30 points and 19 assists to lead the Hornets to a win. The high pace energy and fanfare was a site. The fan giveaways at the game were well worth the participation and the commentary during the game and timeouts were very interactive and fun. The overall game experience is a shore fire family fun night or an excellent hang out night with friends.
