New Jersey Devils History

The New Jersey Devils were born in 1982, the third incarnation of a franchise that began as the Kansas City Scouts (1974-76) before spending six years in Denver as the Colorado Rockies. The arrival of president/general manager Lou Lamoriello in 1987 started the franchise's rise to the NHL elite. The Devils made the playoffs in 21 of the next 24 seasons, including five trips to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Devils made it as far as the conference finals in the 1987-1988 and 1993-1994 seasons, preparing them for their historic run the following year in which they won their first Stanley Cup Championship, sweeping the Detroit Red Wings.

The Devils returned to the Stanley Cup Final in 2000, dispatching the Dallas Stars in six games on an iconic double-overtime Cup-clinching goal by Jason Arnott. The next season, as the best offensive team in the NHL, they returned to the Final.

The Devils' stretch of dominance was far from over, though. They won their third Stanley Cup Championship in 2003, spoiling the Anaheim Ducks’ first-ever playoff run with a Game 7 shutout orchestrated by Martin Brodeur. To date, the club has won three Stanley Cup Championships and five Eastern Conference Championships.

In 2022, the Devils returned to the second round of the playoffs—their first time since 2011. Led by young stars Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, the Devils defeated their long-time rivals the New York Rangers in the first round, before losing their next series to the Carolina Hurricanes.

  • Awesome Devils Experience

Great team, venue, and a wonderful concession experience

  • One of the best sporting events I’ve ever attended

by Anthony Ludwig on 10/29/25Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

My father and I had nothing but a positive experience attending a New Jersey Devils game at the Prudential Center. The arena was beautiful and clean, staff was helpful, and the game atmosphere was second to none. The game presentation in particular was great. I got the spicy chicken strips and fries, and they tasted great. I will say $17.00 is pretty over the top for one beer, but those are the times we live in. Overall, great experience, and I look forward to a return visit.

  • Fun but cold

by The Hammer on 10/29/25Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 4 out of 5

Great arena, good sight lines, fun experience. But be aware this is, by far, the coldest arena in the NHL. Dress as if you were watching a game outdoors.

  • LOVE THE ENERGY!!!

by Rosas on 10/1/25Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 5 out of 5

We took our 3 small kids (4, 6, and 8 years old) and they LOVED it! They had the best time ever- so exciting to get them to love hockey! Really fun, high energy game - would highly recommend!

  • Too Loud

by Tommy Toe Drag on 9/26/25Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 2 out of 5

The volume made my ears ring and I had to hold my son's head to block the sounds between whistles. I can't imagine having the volume up that high makes anyone's experience better. I go to games all the time and each time I get there, I'm reminded about how awful the experience is. I love the Pru Center. I love hockey. I can't stand the way the devils turn their hockey games into a circus.

  • Brutal

by Bodhan on 4/8/25Prudential Center - NewarkRating: 1 out of 5

I thought this game would be a great local battle but unfortunately it was an easy game for the devils. Rangers really suck these times, no heart . Devils deserved their win
