NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL IN CONCERT:

Indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel triggered a collective jaw-drop with the April 2013 announcement of a reunion tour in late 2013/early 2014. In the 15-year gap since their last shows, lore surrounding the band has reached near-mythic proportions, earning them an ever-growing cult following and making the possibility of a reunion tour an indie rock fantasy. Only a truly impressive return to the stage could have met the soaring expectations, and that's exactly what the band has delivered on tour, performing the entirety of their two seminal studio albums to throngs of awestruck fans around the globe.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Athens, Georgia-based Neutral Milk Hotel began in the early '90s as the solo project of singer-songwriter Jeff Magnum, previously of Olivia Tremor Control. Following a few singles and an EP, Magnum made his full-length debut with 1996's On Avery Island, putting together a band for a tour supporting the album. The lineup would stick, resulting in the now-legendary group of musicians on 1998's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, a modern classic of indie rock. The success of the album and the stresses of life on the road ultimately took its toll on Magnum, leading to the band's indefinite hiatus at the end of that year. While Magnum has performed solo since then, the band's 2013/14 reunion tour marked their first live shows together in 15 years.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"NMH lived up to the incredibly high expectations. They played all my favorite songs and encouraged the audience to participate. Jeff Mangum was both energetic and clearly humbled to play before a sold out house."

"I never thought I would see this group play together, so to hear the songs so expertly played was a really powerful experience. NMH are all about the MUSIC, not egos or fame or marketing, which makes a huge difference for music lovers like me. Their musicianship shines!"

"This concert was fantastic. After waiting many years to see this band, they live up to every expectation. The crowd was very enthusiastic and the band responded in kind."

Great show. High energy, lush instrumentation (trombones, singing saws, tubas), and oh, those songs.

    NMH was amazing

by nightfan101 on 7/25/14Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

The only complaint I had was that the set list was too short! Other than that, it was an unforgettable experience. Everyone in the band is so talented and the music sounded so raw. It's just amazing that we all get a chance to see the group perform live after the group disbanded 15 years ago. Highly recommended!

Epic. A dream come true. Humbling to experience such heartfelt passionate music from my favorite band. Poignant and supercharged.

Neutral Milk Hotel will be remembered as legendary

by Anonymous on 7/24/14the Mann - Philadelphia

Even after all the years of this band's hiatus, Jeff's unique and awe-inspiring vocal delivery has remained stunningly intact and the band's vibrant energy feels fresh. Perhaps the most important hallmark of any great live act: the band's material comes to life as an uncanny recreation of the record - making the audience feel as if they were bearing witness to the album's actual recording before their very eyes/ears. I hope the band continues to wow audiences wherever and whenever they tour.

    Great show, not-so-great crowd

    by JayKay97 on 7/24/14the Mann - Philadelphia

Neutral Milk Hotel was amazing. I could have listened to them play for a few more hours! I highly recommend seeing them at any opportunity. The sound quality was mostly very good, although a few times it was too loud to make out which song was being played due to the location of my seat and the speakers. The Mann has a great atmosphere and I love being able to walk around outside before the show. The band played a great mix of songs from "On Avery Island" and "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea." My only complaint is that other concert-goers were not respectful of those of us who came to enjoy the music. People were CONSTANTLY leaving and coming back throughout the entire show. In my row and the row in front of me, it was nonstop. A few people were yelling obnoxiously throughout and/or smoking in a way they thought was sneaky. People were also taking photos and video after the band explicitly requested that they refrain from doing so. If the music hadn't been great, this would have annoyed me a lot more.

Neutral Milk Hotel - best concert ever

    by pammylou77 on 7/24/14the Mann - Philadelphia

The concert was amazing, from beginning to end. The staff were extremely friendly & helpful. The merch was reasonably priced and they even helped with recommendations and sizes. The band was phenomenal, they sounded great. Everything was mixed well. I loved the band, they played all the hits that us die hard fans have loved, line by line for years and the band didn't talk too much between songs. :) it was all about the music and honestly, it felt very communal and spiritual. The venue was gorgeous too with the high wooden ceiling & our seats were great!

    I love Neutral Milk Hotel

by JoeyJoJoJrShabadoo on 7/24/14the Mann - Philadelphia

These dudes were great. They played all the great hits from aero plane and Avery island with some from Ferris wheel on fire. They sounded so great live! It was cathartic hearing all their songs being played out in front of me. Seeing the whole band together having a great time was cool in itself. However, the best part was when Jeff Mangum played acoustic and belted out those heartfelt acoustic ballads. I cannot get over how well he sang, what a guy! Overall, a great night, a great experience, and a great band!

Neutral Milk Hotel is the best band nobody knows

by akopczyk on 7/23/14Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

The opening bands were decent. Connections was pretty good despite being super small time. Circulatory System is a good band, but they picked weird songs to play. They have many better ones they could have picked. Neutral Milk Hotel, as expected, was absolutely phenomenal. They played ever song but one that I wanted to hear and blew the crowd away with every one. I couldn't help but sing every song they played. Seriously, I've seen Roger Waters play The Wall live and this MIGHT have been a better show. That's saying something.

    NMH: like they never left

by LShol on 7/23/14Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

This was exactly what fans hope a reunion concert will be. NMH sounded amazing, from the musicianship to Magnum's voice. There was no fluff, only the fantastic music that bewitched NMH fans so many years ago.

Jeff Mangum was a gracious and awesome dude. Played a 20 minute encore with all fan favorites. Neutral Milk Hotel held nothing back and played their hearts out. Awesome show all around. Connections and Circulatory System were fun to see before the main event, talented folks in those bands too.

    Turn down the suck

by Anonymous on 7/23/14Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - Columbus

I love Neutral Milk Hotel and it was no question they were up there playing their asses off and putting on a great show. In the pit however one would not have known that by listening only. Throughout the show there was slight improvement but overall the sound engineering was sub-par at best. They NEVER got Mangum's vocals eq'd right when he played solo guitar. The band sounded decent as a 3-4 piece but as everyone knows they have a unique sound; adding horns, accordions, and various percussion instruments that are all in similar frequency range requires a good balance or else it all mushes together, which is what happened. I think the band did a good job of recreating the distorted yet coherent sound of their albums, and the sound engineers did not mix it well.
