NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL IN CONCERT:

Indie rock legends Neutral Milk Hotel triggered a collective jaw-drop with the April 2013 announcement of a reunion tour in late 2013/early 2014. In the 15-year gap since their last shows, lore surrounding the band has reached near-mythic proportions, earning them an ever-growing cult following and making the possibility of a reunion tour an indie rock fantasy. Only a truly impressive return to the stage could have met the soaring expectations, and that's exactly what the band has delivered on tour, performing the entirety of their two seminal studio albums to throngs of awestruck fans around the globe.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Athens, Georgia-based Neutral Milk Hotel began in the early '90s as the solo project of singer-songwriter Jeff Magnum, previously of Olivia Tremor Control. Following a few singles and an EP, Magnum made his full-length debut with 1996's On Avery Island, putting together a band for a tour supporting the album. The lineup would stick, resulting in the now-legendary group of musicians on 1998's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, a modern classic of indie rock. The success of the album and the stresses of life on the road ultimately took its toll on Magnum, leading to the band's indefinite hiatus at the end of that year. While Magnum has performed solo since then, the band's 2013/14 reunion tour marked their first live shows together in 15 years.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"NMH lived up to the incredibly high expectations. They played all my favorite songs and encouraged the audience to participate. Jeff Mangum was both energetic and clearly humbled to play before a sold out house."

"I never thought I would see this group play together, so to hear the songs so expertly played was a really powerful experience. NMH are all about the MUSIC, not egos or fame or marketing, which makes a huge difference for music lovers like me. Their musicianship shines!"

"This concert was fantastic. After waiting many years to see this band, they live up to every expectation. The crowd was very enthusiastic and the band responded in kind."

The show was great- had no idea Circulatory System was opening. Should have been better advertised as I like them even more than NMH!

Despite Mangum having a slight flu his voice was powerful and flawless!

Visceral emotion mixed with transcendental themes

by amscms11 on 4/26/15State Theatre, Kalamazoo - Kalamazoo

This was the best show I've ever seen, hands down. So much raw emotion and passion passed through the music. I somehow feel that I understand NMH's cryptic lyrics a lot better now with that live music context. They also played a good, long encore. It was great! I especially enjoyed seeing Julian Koster's versatility and skill in playing so many instruments well, including a saw (!?), accordion, and guitar. He was also super enthusiastic and charismatic.

So many great songs played with abundant enthusiasm. I felt lucky to witness a concert that just a couple years ago seemed impossible. If this is indeed the last tour by NMH it is a shame. I would love to see a new album followed by another tour.

    Neutral Milk

    by Beau2Jackson on 9/24/14Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Awesome show. Great to see Neutral Milk after so long. To be honest, they were a little less enthusiastic than I'd hoped, but c'est la vie. They played an amazing set and it was well done. I would have added a forest with snow falling and a slow motion battle staged between unicorns and satyrs, but it was pretty chill anyway... Daniel Johnston was amazing - struggled through the set but sounded surprisingly incredible. His voice and his genuine love for it hasn't aged somehow. The Breeders - solid, beautiful; amazing harmonies

The return of Neutral Milk Hotel is a thing of understandable excitement. They were great live... though they requested that the screens and video feeds used for the benefit of people sitting far from the stage be turned off. Had I known, I certainly wouldn't have shelled out for nicer seats. We were just close enough to regret the extra expense but still too far from the stage to really see anything at all. Had we known ahead of time, we'd have been perfectly happy back in the nose-bleed seats in the back...

Beautiful. Intimate. Absence of obnoxious concert-goers and their phone glares made for an enjoyable night.

Attack of the 90s Alt Giants

by rBunnny on 9/22/14Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

So, to start off, it was my girlfriend to told me about the opening acts. I wasn't even aware that Daniel Johnston AND the Breeders were opening up for Neutral Milk Hotel. The most pleasantest surprise ever! Danny rocked it. Then the Breeders blew it out of the water. By the time, NMH got on stage, I was already thoroughly rocked. Afterwards, the euphoria was incomprehensible! It was the most remarkable date night the Better Half and I ever had. Thank you, Danny, Kim, and Jeff!

The best concert I've been to in probably a decade

by Nationoflove on 9/21/14Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The show was excellent. Everyone in the crowd was on their feet for the whole concert. The opening acts were well selected, good music. I think my favorite aspect if the show was that when Neutral Milk came on, they didn't use the large screens to project close ups. The screens were off during their set so we couldn't get sucked into not watching the actual performance. It made the show feel like a more small intimate performance, it just happened to be at The Bowl.

    NMH was awesome!

    by COOKIE1996 on 8/4/14the Mann - Philadelphia

Love the Mann, love the band, a great night for a show. The only issue was I bought the best seats which were available close to the On-Sale date and I got Balcony. My friends purchased tickets later than I did and got GA (Pit). That was disappointing.

NMH live for the first time, in my favorite venue...it was perfect minus the absence of my dear sister friend who left this world before her time. We moved to the music for her...thank you NMH for a fantastic evening and the first smile in a week.

    Neutral Milk Hotel Perfection.

by CKuff on 7/28/14Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

I have loved Neutral Milk Hotel for a while and was very excited to see them play. I had no idea what it would sound like live. It turns out it's every bit as frenetic, beautiful, poignant, exciting, and timeless as the records. Jeff Mangums voice sounds like a Yogi shouting truths about the nature of the universe through a megaphone on a mountain top (flawlessly in tune). Julian Koster was energetic, intriguing, and inspiring. I had no idea how much he had contributed to the sound of those recordings. Amazing. The arrangements were great. The band sounded huge, and very tight, and at times very sloppy and on the verge of falling apart. If you're looking for a super tight band full of studio pros that sound flawless and stick very closely to a metronomic time feel then you must not know this band. The fun is in the journey. Jeff's solo tunes were so compelling. What a force of nature. What a voice. If you like this bands recordings at all then I advise you to GO SEE THEM WHILE THEY'RE PLAYING SHOWS!!!!!

    NMH

by neutralmilkhotelwasthesht on 7/27/14Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

Great act, incredible performance. Sounded just as good as the record and a quasi-spiritual experience for me as a fan of theirs. The outdoor venue (prospect park) shut the concert down during a small storm, and asked us to leave. After leaving, the guards became hostile as the crowd attempted to reenter once it became clear that the show was still on.

    Outstanding, never fail to entertain!!!

by ThankU on 7/26/14Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

This is my second Neutral Milk show and they are always an amazing time. Jeff's voice is absolutely piercing, the band's performance is always alive, and the fact that the show was interrupted for twenty minutes due to the lightning, made it an especially memorable evening!!! It just goes to show that when an overflowing and devoted crowd is asked to leave the premises for their own safety and well-being, and not a soul flinches, something truly special is taking place in front of us. I love you, Neutral Milk! Thanks again!!! .....until next time!!!! :)

    An Evening Wonderful & Rainy!

by DamaDuende on 7/26/14Celebrate Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Bandshell - Brooklyn

They played through the rain, they sounded amazing. A well organized event in a beloved venue. Neutral Milk Hotel always evokes that "love at first sight" feeling, through the sheer power of music.
