In my opinion, nothing can beat the sudden death nature of a regional championship series. The games I watched included last year's national champion of NCAA D1 Hockey, the Boston College Eagles. Their game with the Colorado College Tigers started off looking like a rout with BC scoring on their first rush from the opening face-off. But Colorado College would have none of that. They responded with a goal a few minutes later, then put on a clinic for the rest of the first period outshooting BC 18-8 and scoring one of 2 short handed goals during the game. What I really appreciate about collegiate sports is the sportsmanship to include the ceremonial introduction of the players before the game, the handshake among the competitors after the game, but was completely unexpected but very touching was the final stanza before the BC players left the ice. After the handshake, the victorious Colorado College players left the ice while the BC players of froze in place on the ice near their bench, looking up into the crowd where their pep band was playing the BC fight song then the BC alma mater. When the band finished the song, the players applauded by slapping their sticks on the ice, then lifting their sticks in salute to the band. The band simultaneously applauded the players who then worked their way to the locker room, their season and their dreams of another national championship left on the ice. Never before have I witnessed such an affinity between a bunch of jocks and band geeks. It made the whole event very worthwhile.
