About

Nathaniel Rateliff on Tour

Nathaniel Rateliff is a performer of glorious extremes. When he's fronting his eight-piece band the Night Sweats, he's an absolute belter — a howling soul man raised on Otis Redding who would've given Sam & Dave reason to consider adding another ampersand to their name. But then there's Rateliff the quiet confessor — a folksy balladeer who channels the likes of Harry Nilsson and Leonard Cohen as he strums his guitar and sings of heartache, loss and overcoming. In either configuration, this burly and bearded Missourian leads with his heart, inspiring crowds to sing and clap along at any tempo. While Rateliff has led a handful of bands in different styles over the years, he's always found success on the road, sharing the stage with the likes of the Lumineers, Michael Kiwanuka, Bon Iver and Rosanne Cash.

Nathaniel Rateliff in Concert

Nathaniel Rateliff's blue-collar roots deeply inform not only his songs but also his path through an often challenging career. He grew up in rural Hermann, Missouri, and by 7 was drumming alongside his mother (a guitarist) and father (on harmonica) in the family gospel band. In the wake of the elder Rateliff's untimely passing, a 13-year-old Nathaniel discovered a cache of secular music his dad had been hiding, including records by Otis Redding, Booker T. and Van Morrison. Inspired by the new tunes and in need of an outlet, Rateliff began writing songs. For a while he bounced between Hermann and Denver, cycling through jobs — carpentry, gardening, janitorial services — while trying to get various music projects off the ground: the emo-leaning Born in the Flood, the folksier Nathaniel Rateliff and the Wheel and, at last, the Night Sweats. That last group took off after their rip-roaring soul single "S.O.B." went big in 2015, and Rateliff should've been set for life. Alas, the group's second album, 2018's Tearing at the Seams, was bookended by intense loss: first, Rateliff's divorce and, second, the death of his friend and go-to producer Richard Swift. To work through his feelings, the singer went solo for 2020's And It's Still Alright, a set of tender ballads that mourn while seeking light.

    Texas bad. Show amazing

by Mikalodeon on 11/11/23Will Rogers Auditorium - Fort Worth

The show was sooo good. Too bad I had to attend it with a bunch of kindergartners who could sit through one song. Yelling like morons. Talking through the whole set. Before Long Texas will be off the map for all major acts.

Great performance! Poor sound where are seats were.

by Shiner on 11/11/23Will Rogers Auditorium - Fort Worth

Nathaniel and the band were really great. Really good performance and fun show. We were under the balcony toward the back of the floor (center right) and the sound was really terrible. Otherwise, all good.

I could have listened all night

by Punkiest1 on 11/11/23Will Rogers Auditorium - Fort Worth

As someone who has to travel for musical events, I am surprised that this venue has not been utilized much. It is a good size, easy to navigate and comfortable enough. Staff were so friendly and helpful but you can tell there hasn’t been a lot of practice here, dealing with unruly audience members was slow and affected the evening for the folks who could not see because of a few in the front row who blocked the view of everyone behind them. The headliner couldn’t even get them to sit down. They were finally escorted out but listening to dozens shouting SIT DOWN for too long was my only disappointment. I hope there are shows here regularly so I can have an alternative in Ft Worth with seating at a venue likely to host my musical favorites. I had a wonderful evening listening to Nathaniel Rateliff. Minus a few idiots it was one of my favorite shows ever

    Best Performance Ever!

by Erin on 11/9/23The Louisville Palace - Louisville

This is a must see show! Strings, two drummers, 13 string steel guitar, and Nathaniel Rateliff! What more could you want! Seriously! We loved him when he was with the night sweats, but this performance is much much better by a long shot!!

    Loved every minute of it!

by Teeb on 11/8/23The Louisville Palace - Louisville

Louisville Palace was a fun venue-a small, beautifully restored, old movie house with comfortable seating. We 70-somethings appreciate assigned seats and not having to jockey for position in order to see the performance. I could have done without the people around us who felt called upon to talk and jump up and down doing fist pumps all evening long, but that minor annoyance didn't detract from NR's wonderful performance. I've been a fan for some time, and have seen him with the Night Sweats at an outdoor venue, but this was an altogether different experience. I love his voice. I love his guitar work. I love his background arrangements. But most of all I love his lyrics; so full of truth, pain, and the struggles we all face just in living life. "Standing out on a ledge with no way to get down, you start praying for wings to grow. Oh, baby just let go."Wow. So simple, and so pure. I'd go see him again today if I could.

One of the best I’ve seen

by Bob LT on 11/8/23The Louisville Palace - Louisville

Straight up, one of the best concerts I’ve been to. I’m almost 60, and been to hundreds. The venue acoustics were very good and the sound engineers had it pegged. Nathaniel Rateliff’s voice was in excellent shape and he sounded great. I was not sure what to expect regarding accompaniment and orchestration, but when the strings, percussion and guitars all took the stage and performed the opening 2 songs, I was sold! The rest of the show built, and the final song before encore, Time Stands, brought the whole place down!! Highly recommend this show. The opener, Kevin Morby, was very good as well, he stands on his own and hope to see him again. The Palace was a great venue, first time for me there, and will go again. Thanks Nathaniel, band, and Louisville. See you again soon.

    Amazing show

by NR fangirl on 11/7/23The Anthem - Washington

Beautiful water views from this venue while enjoying cocktails before the show were a perk.. ..easily one of my top three concert experiences. Sound quality was very rich even in the third row.. sometimes it can be hit or miss up there.. seeing this artist expose his vulnerability was incredibly moving.. thank you Nate.. I’m a fan for life..❤️ if you’re even a casual fan I can’t recommend getting to one these intimate shows.. bring your Kleenex..

    Total Awesomness

    by siscokid on 11/7/23

Louisville Palace is a beautiful venue if you never been. If you dont have tickets yet. fly to Texas or west coast and go. This is a great evening with a great songwriter/singer. He really dont need the ruckus of the Night sweats for an incredible show, He can do it solo. How did it take him so long to hit the big time. One of my favorites
