  • Unparalleled

by Dr MYR on 3/13/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Probably the best ASO performance we’ve attended. Stutzmann is the best I've seen, demonstrating exceptional skill and leadership throughout her engagement and performance with the orchestra. Her ability to inspire and guide the musicians is truly unparalleled, creating a performance that resonated deeply with everyone in the audience.

  • Not what I expected

by Greenville Psul on 3/11/25Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

We had never heard the Atlanta Symphony, and thought it would be an interesting experience. It certainly was interesting, although not always in a good way. The concert consisted of two Beethoven symphonies. The orchestra played with zest and engagement, but intonation problems and sloppy entrances were too common. I’ve heard many small regional orchestras play more accurately. The overall interpretation was fine, but the underlying problem is that they have a very large sound system “enhancing” the Orchestra. Microphones are placed everywhere overhead, and whoever was at the mixing panel was really amping up the bass instruments and French horns to the point where they dominated the entire ensemble. In some sections, the horns sounded distorted and blasting; not quite sure if that was the way they were playing or the artificial effects of the sound system. Pianissimo sections came across as forte, and forte sections came across as 90 decibel thunder. The auditorium is acoustically very “live”, but when the sound reinforcement is added, it becomes overwhelming. Far more suited for a pops concert, or backing up for a mainstream singer than for a Symphony performance. I’ve been to hundreds of Beethoven concerts, but never heard a live one at that volume level. The performance eventually lost any sense of intimacy and nuance, and it was really hard to tell if the instrumental sections was well balanced, or if they were relying on the sound system to compensate for any sectional weaknesses. Toward the end of the 7th, it became a thundering muddle. The audience seemed to love it, so perhaps they’re used to sound-system-enhanced “pop concert” symphonies in Atlanta. I can honestly say that I enjoyed portions of the performance, but other parts came across as overwhelmingly loud, blasting and exaggerated, so we probably won’t be back. Four stars for enthusiasm, good tempos, and energy. Three stars for somewhat sloppy ensemble playing, and one star for the “ rock concert“ environment.

  • Glorious

Nathalie Stutzmann is an extraordinary maestro. It was my gift to watch her conduct Beethoven’s 7th on March 6th. She is amazing to watch, powerful , playful when appropriate and she held that orchestra with her perfectly. She brought them along for a wonderful ride and they were right on point. A perfectly wonderful performance and truly one of the best concerts I’ve experienced. I wish I could have gone again. Thank you for this joyous gift. It was a religious experience.

The performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony in the second part of the program exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. The best!

Nathalie Stutzmann is a terrific conductor. Her love and passion for the music are revealed in the energetic, vibrant and creative display of the Symphony. Her intense and vivid interaction with the orchestra is a pleasure to watch as mush as it is felling and hearing the music. What a delight!!!

Letting people in 30+ minutes after the start of the symphony was not good ,letting people back in after leaving was unexpected and happened 2x the seating is tight an required standing up and setting down repeatedly not what I expected for my $175

My daughter invited me to this performance to brighten my day and it did much more than that. The music, the singing, there is just so much to love!

  • First Timers but won’t be our last, excellent!

by Colleen & John on 1/30/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

First time at Atlanta Symphony Hall & it did not disappoint. Our seats were in Orch Right in the 6th row so we had good quality of sound & were able to really see most of the musicians. Especially the piano during the first half of Mozart. We will definitely be back!

  • Overall a fine concert

by FTS on 1/23/24Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Overall this was a fine experience. I am of the opinion that the Bruckner Te Deum should not follow the 9th. The 9th is a very spiritual work and more than any other Bruckner symphony reflects Bruckner's sometimes violent relationship with God. The coda is, in my opinion, a resolution of this relationship - God and Bruckner are finally at peace with one another. Stuzman did a marvelous job with the violent portions of the symphony. She let the orchestra play to its fullest. There were some inconsistencies in the violins - the fast notes were often inaccurate - but the brass were superb - as they needed to be. I haven't heard the orchestra for many years during my absence from Atlanta so I didn't know what to expect. I was not disappointed, except for the coda in the third movement. With a few year's experience and some musical maturity, I think Stutzman will be a fine Bruckner conductor.

  • Amazing!

by Brenda on 6/24/23Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Nathalie Stutzmann is an absolutely amazing conductor and it is just as amazing to watch her as it is to listen to the music she elicits from the ASU - which is a top-notch orchestra. The piano soloist was amazing, and Ravel’s Boleto was the cherry on the top of a wonderful experience.

  • Great symphony experience

    by frank3 on 6/21/23Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

My first trip to the Atlanta Symphony in several years. Bolero on the program got me there, but the other three works reminded me that the symphony doesn't have to play only recognizable pieces to be enjoyed. The piano soloist was spectacular. This was the first time I had seen and heard Ravel's Bolero performed live. That performance was beyond words and one I will always treasure. Nathalie Stutzmann does amazing work, both as a conductor and music director, choosing and conducting a wonderful assortment of pieces. And one last thing - please do Bolero again within the next few years. It is a piece that must be appreciated live. It is one of the few that a recording, regardless of how well it is done, cannot do it justice.

  • Stunning Stutzmann

by AfrmA on 6/21/23Atlanta Symphony Hall - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The opening Tannhauser was so beautiful I was in tears. The stunning Bartok was a great way to go out! Watching Nathalie thrills me. She connects with the players and the audience. She's so passionate!
