NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:
In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”
“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”
“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT! It is a beautiful marriage of Natalie's amazing voice and her inquisitive intellect. The first 90 mins was a tour through her new album - a compilation of children's poems for which she wrote and arranged the music - AMAZING - and then her "encore", actually nearly an entire second set, was a "greatest hits" set..... Oh Natalie!
Natalie Merchant gave not only a 2 hour plus concert, but she also really played to her audience. The stage banter was funny and engaging. I was in the last row of the venue, but it didn't matter. Her voice filled Strathmore's auditorium, and sounds as lush at is ever has. I'm only sorry I didn't get to sit closer. At the end, she actually came out into the audience and shook people's hands. Not just one or two, either. She walked up and down both aisles in the front, thanking audience members. A great show. One of the best concerts I've seen from her.
Natalie was totally amazing! Outstanding show and outstanding venue. The musicians working with her are outstanding. I can't say enough good things about the show.
She's got a spunky personality and she does let her personality show through in the show, unlike most concerts. She introduced the background story of the poets prior to singing the song - very cool. She would go off on tangents sometimes, including interacting with the crowd. She has an interesting style of moving with the songs and it's different for each one. Really worth seeing her live!
Incredible show! What a performer and what a performance. Great venue - very comfortable. This was one of the best shows I have ever been to. Great rapport with audience. She was very comfortable. She did a great job introducing the songs. Wonderful evening.
Natalie is an amazing songwriter singer and beautiful to see she captivated her audience with her charm grace and natural beauty .she is by far my favorite female artist I love how she had the slide show and told us about the poems it made me love the new cd more
Brilliant energy reaching beyond Natile's fans. Amazing musicians, a very good evening in a good NY Venue. Welcome back Natile, we missed you.
For me personally, I felt the show was amazing. I probably have a biased view because I am a very devoted fan. Natalie's tour is to introduce her new album which is a collection of works from past poets that she adapted to music. The orchestration of each is a work of art alone. Her interpretation and performance is a masterpiece! Her voice is the best ever! I've always enjoyed listening to anything she opted to sing! This work may not be appreciated by some of her fans that are seeking 'Carnival' , 'Wonder' and 'Jealousy', but she did a selections from her past albums in a double encore 7 song session! Excellent! I enjoyed her interaction with the audience. George from Brooklyn did a great job assisting Natalie on stage and it was very lighthearted and entertaining. It's nice to see a fun side of Natalie with some of her songs so somber and on the gray side. The band ensemble was superb!!! This album was a work from the heart and I feel fortunate to have been able to witness this live performance and experience her devotion to the arts - literature & music! I love to watch her dance too! I look forward to her work and more performances for many years to come. It was so good to see her back on stage! Thank you!
concert was interesting and then natalie and her cast of thousands came back to play her older music. we loved it. natalie is a beautiful soul with a beautiful and enchanting voice. i would recommend this concert.
Natalie was AMAZING! Like a Fine Wine, she is getting better and better. Watch videos etc. of her as a young girl singing with 10,000 Manicacs, and although she was great, her voice has gotten even richer and more beautiful with maturity. You will never see a more emotional performer than Natalie. It was very interesting to see pictures of the poets and hear some background on each one and the reasoning for chosing that poem and poet. I have been enjoying the new album and having this new information makes me enjoy it more. Of course to finish up with several of our "old favorites" was a great way to have us walk out singing. I have seen Natalie many times in concert. She just keeps getting better and better. Just Amazing!!
Natalie Merchant tangoed, hula'ed and contra-danced her way through her concert last night. Her band of eight included the fiddles of blue grass and the oboe of big bands and folk guitar with an Asian beat. You never knew what would appear next. Her topic was children's poetry from the 1800's to the present, set to whatever music suited. It was an educational night, with a slide show to teach about the poetry and the poets. But most remarkably, Natalie Merchant: she sings with her whole body- she not only dances to the beat, but even when her body is relatively quiet, her arms and fingers undulate throughout. She is beautiful, impish and sexy all at the same time; and her voice and songs reverberate all of that and all of her. This is a seven year project that must have begun with the birth of her first child. It's a study which of what has entertained and sustained children and their parents for generations. It's a study that comes alive with Merchant's voice, strong and sweet like the best of a story given to a child.
Natalie Merchant surely delivered with her performance at the Town Hall Theater after an eight year hiatus. Her compositions were an intimate musical journey through beautiful melodies put to thoughtful poetry. Her gifted band also delivered the delightful arrangements during the 2.5 hour mesmerizing performance. A must experience for any Natalie fan!
Beautiful, moving, deep, creative, imaginative, funny... great material from the new CD, "Leave Your Sleep," combined with creative, stellar versions of familiar and obscure songs from her previous solo and 10,00 Maniacs work... an 8 piece band of great players, with two guitars, accordion/piano, cello, violin, bass, banjo, woodwinds, and occasional brushes on a tom or snare... and, a substantial and interesting set list... really really satisfying and highly recommended!!
A true performer to the very last note! Natalie has an angelic voice that radiates throughout the entire performance. The show lasted over 2 1/2 hours and she takes us through an unforgettable trip that I want to experience over and over again. Thanks, Natalie!
I was in lyrical-Heaven. She never ceases to impress. I LOVED the "classroom-style" video presentation . Her charm was adorable as She fumbled w/ the wireless remote technology ! Manhattan LOVES her (despite the fact that She prefers to reside in the woods) !!! "Hats-Off" to the accompanying musicians ... that group really did their best to lay an "easily-digestible" platform beneath Ms. Merchant's "icing-on-the-cake" vocals !! I heard some querks, but, WHO CARES ??!!! It was genuine & beautiful, none-the-less.
This was an incredible concert. Natalie Merchant is always a phenomenal performer in her live concerts but this was such a personal and passionate project that she had undertaken that the joy she experienced in researching and creating the album just poured out onto the stage for all of us to share. She is an amazing talent. We saw an early show from this tour at the Ethical Society and both of these shows were positively magical. Don't miss it!
Natalie's concert was one of those times, when after you experience it, you are so happy to be alive. You suddenly see things happening around you in a different light. She recharges your batteries with her performance full of beautiful music, unusual amazing voice and moves that are so natural and so intertwined with the rhythm and tones of the music that you can't distinguish whether the moves come from the music or the music sounds the way the moves dictate. You can just see that her moves and dance make the performance even more complete and perfect and that it all comes deep from within her. Natalie is a seriously wonderful and wonderfully serious artist.
Natalie Merchant's voice is so AMAZING! So gifted and talented! She gave every bit of herself at this concert and it was incredible. The musicians were also outstanding. Can't wait to see her again! Town Hall is great venue to see concerts. Only downside was that it was very hot outside and about just as hot inside. The air conditioner was not on high enough so it was uncomfortable.
Great great great show. Played songs adapted from old obscure fairy tales ( I guess from her new album). Very cool concept., Then her "encore" was actually a 2nd set (about 8 songs) from Trouble to Carnival to Gold Rush Brides. Some others too I don't know the names of. She talked a lot, danced and was just awesome.
