NATALIE MERCHANT IN CONCERT:
In 2014 Natalie Merchant wowed both critics and fans with a self-titled, self-produced album -- her first record of all-new material in more than 12 years and a triumphant reminder that she remains one of the most influential voices in alternative rock. The former 10,000 Maniacs singer still possesses the same charm and magnetism on stage that made her a star in the ‘80s, enchanting audiences with her signature unadorned style and whirling dancing. Whether she’s performing new songs like “The End” backed by a full symphony orchestra or wending her way through a medley of fan favorites accompanied by only piano and acoustic guitar, Merchant’s perfectly preserved voice and unbridled passion always make for an unforgettable concert experience.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Born in Jamestown, NY, Natalie Merchant was encouraged to study music by her mother, who also influenced the budding singer’s development by banning TV from the house. After dropping out of high school and working at a health food store, she started singing for the band Still Life, which eventually became iconic ‘80s alt rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Merchant released five critically acclaimed albums with the band -- including the multi platinum-selling LPs “Blind Man’s Zoo (1989) and Our Time in Eden (1992) -- before leaving the band in 1993. She made her official solo debut in 1995 with the album Tigerlily, a critical and commercial success that spawned three hit singles including “Carnival” and “Jealousy”. Merchant has continued to build on the legacy she established with the Maniacs over the course of five more acclaimed solo albums, including a self-titled work released in 2014 – her first album of entirely new material since 2001’s Motherland.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
“Saw Natalie with the Jax Symphony and it was incredible! The pure, beautiful voice is still there. Didn't disappoint and saved her oldies for the end with the piano and guitar - very intimate in contrast to playing with the symphony.”
“She certainly didn't disappoint. Her voice is just as amazing live as it is in studio, which didn't surprise me at all. What a beautiful talent. And a full orchestra is always appreciated.”
“The woman rocked the stage with just a pianist and acoustic guitarist (did not need the other 9,999 Maniacs). She doesn't just perform the songs, she embodies them.”

I wish wish she had played Carnival and a trouble me, but it was amazing!
Amazing, beautiful, and incredible show. She has so much magic in her voice and music. Loved it! Great atmosphere and everyone stayed in their seats.
Loved her energy, song choices and all the great musicians with her. Thanks for a great experience.
Great night. Has to park in the overflow lot. The busses were adequate. Had to wait a little after the show but they got priority through the traffic which helped.
The music was fantastic. She has an amazing voice. My complaint is the alcohol control. They were a bit rude to people when there was open chairs saying that people must be in them. They need to remember that people can be in the shop and/or walking around. I also feel the prices for tickets are too high when you might not even get to see the stage because you are too far off on the side. They need to do something about the stage and the ability to see the artist. Maybe have a big screen? Venue is lovely and the staff working the wine tent and in the shops are extremely pleasant.
Natalie was in wonderful voice, in flowing red gown she sang and twirled and danced across the stage all night. A short intermission between sets then closed out the show with…. Kind and Generous Carnival These are the Days An amazing evening with Natalie Merchant. Highly recommend catching the tour and her New Album ‘Keep Your Courage’ 👏🎤
I appreciate some of her new songs she performed & her struggles that she wrote about but I wanted to relive the 90’s music & that didn’t happen til her encore. For the entire performance to be sad, slow & melancholy was over the top boring.
I’ve been enjoying Natalie’s music in Seattle since the 90s. This tour reminded me of her earlier days. Tons of her greatest and most popular songs. She also played some really great deep tracks for her longtime fans. Her band sounds incredible and her voice was amazing as ever. I took my wife and 11 year old daughter. It was my daughter’s first real concert. She loved every minute of it. She’s been walking through the house all weekend signing, “I want to thank you, thank you!” Warms a dad’s heart and so glad I was able to introduce my daughter to Natalie and her music. 10/10 Review and can’t wait to see her on the next tour! ❤️
Went to this show with my mom and we laughed, cried, and danced our butts off. So special ❤️
Natalie sang every hit and dabbled in some new songs. She sounded better than any streaming app or CD I've ever heard her on. I read some reviews saying her shows were boring. Do you really expect her music to conjure a mosh pit? It's always been just her up front doing her thing and dazzling us with her amazing voice.
I mean, talk about a snooze fest. Natalie still has a beautiful voice and sounds great but her setlist in Fort Lauderdale was depressing and frankly, boring. Had I seen the setlist prior to taking my wife to this concert, I would have attempted to sell the tickets. We left early, as did others. People said the same thing on the way out: not what we expected. We weren't expecting to see pyrotechnics and lasers but one song that caused a toe tap would have been nice.
Fantastic show, the energy, her voice, the orchestra. Natalie was amazing!
Natalie has been on my bucket list for quite some time. NJPAC is a delightful small venue with excellent acoustics. I had wonderful seats, Row E orchestra. I was up close to the stage, The small venue gave me a delightful "up close and personal"experience as I scratched her off my list. Natalie is a songbird who melts the hearts and draws tears from everyone in the house, Overall, a magical night. the sweet memory of it will live on in my heart for ever.
Natalie was in top form and the orchestra backing her up added so much to the overall experience. I was pulled out of my everyday reality and thrust into one of beauty, soul and deep meaning. Natalie is a treasure and NJPAC is a top venue for concerts like this one.
Natalie Merchant put on a great concert with the orchestra last week at NJPAC (which is a terrific and friendly locale and a lot easier to reach than anything in NYC). Natalie's voice was just as powerful and melodious as ever. She is honest and fun but with a beauty and seriousness all her alone. I've always found her voice quite unique and powerful. She is emotional and authentic, warm and friendly. She sang many songs and toward the end a lot of her big hits from decades ago -- I recall Carnival and Wonder and the others as being especially powerful and rousing.
Natalie Merchant has been an incredible live performer for over 40 years ! She is truly an extraordinary experience to view “ LIVE”!
She was incredible. I would even say electrifying, which is not a word that I ever really use. The vocals were so powerful. There was also something about the way in which she carried herself that I so admired. I was thrilled that Abena Koomson-Davis was part of the show! The two of them up there together were alluring. I was in tears at times, as I was so moved by the energy in the room, especially during the second half and toward the end. Thank you!
We got to the facility in plenty of time to be seated before the concert started BUT the people at the theater were insisting the tickets we had in my 'wallet' were not what they needed and the the Ticketmaster app keep closing. We were sent to the box office where there was a long line only to find out the people at the door did not know how to use the wallet. So the evening started a little stressed. Natalie Merchant was great. Thanks
Natalie Merchant was amazing and the place was great
Perfect show at a perfect location. Will watch a show again. NJPAC rocks.
