About NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series is top-tier of three national touring series in the sport alongside the Xfinity Series and Truck Series. The Cup Series operates with a points system. The driver sitting atop the leaderboard to finish the regular season earns 15 playoff points. The Cup Series playoff features the 16 highest-scoring drivers competing through four rounds. A winning driver and winning owner are annually crowned separately.

The Cup Series season runs from February to November every year. NASCAR relocated its Championship Weekend from Homestead-Miami Speedway, which hosted the event for 18 seasons, to ISM Raceway near Phoenix, Arizona.

Iconic tracks that host Cup Series races include the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and Talladega Superspeedway. The Daytona 500 has annually served as the season-opening Cup Series race since 1982.

History of NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series was founded in 1949 by Bill France Sr. and has undergone several evolutions since. It began as the Strictly Stock Series before switching to the Grand National Series (1950-71), Winston Cup Series (1971-2003), Nextel Cup Series (2004-07), Sprint Cup Series (2008-16) and the Monster Energy Series through the 2019 season.

NASCAR opted against renewing with Monster Energy and instead announced the Cup Series would feature a multilayered sponsorship model in December 2019. Busch Beer, Coca-Cola, GEICO, and Xfinity were named as "premier partners."

The trophy was renamed the Bill France Cup ahead of the 2020 season, the first without a title sponsor since 1971.

Richard Petty is the winningest all-time Cup Series driver with 200. The octogenarian notched his first win in 1960 and his last in 1984. In March 2019, though, Petty was surpassed by Kyle Busch in terms of all-time combined national series wins.

Jimmy Johnson topped the Cup Series from 2006 to 2010, marking the first time one driver had won in consecutive years since Jeff Gordon (1997-98). The late Dale Earnhardt did so on three separate occasions (1986-87, 1990-91 and 1993-94).

    Not impressed

I was at Bristol 25 years ago. Way better back then. steeper banks, better surface. You couldn’t even get a ticket. Always sold out. Much different now.

    Cup race at Bristol

by Ziggy on 9/20/23Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

We went to 4 races; Th,F,S. Saturday's race was the least exciting. Lead changes were few. Became a race of 'follow the leader'.

    My First Race was Bristol

by Kendra on 9/20/23Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

Bristol has it figured out y’all! The Bristol Night Race was the coolest fan experience. First of all, there are busses to bring you in if you have to park far away, trucks that will take you up the hill so you don’t have to walk, and they even have an elevator so you don’t have to climb millions of stairs if you’re sitting up top! Second, there are a ton of things to do outside the track. You could walk around the whole track for hours and hours and not run out of things to do. And lastly, the actual race was amazing! The fireworks, audio, driver intros, etc. were all really awesome to see and experience in person. This track has it figured out!

    It’s Bristol BABY!!!!

by Angie on 9/19/23Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

Making memories at Bristol was priceless!! From off roading in the Toyota experience to watching the introduction of the drivers from in front of the stage. To then get to top it all off with experiencing Denny doing his burnout right in front of us after a great race to victory!! What more could anyone ask for?!

Such a fun experience with my family! It was my first race and I will be back to this one and many more. Well organized, and clean which was surprising for the amount of people in attendance.

by C Sowards on 9/19/23Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

Got to the track and had to park about 1 mile from the track but they had suttles to take u to the track they dropped us off next to the entrance of the track and the only complaint that I would have about the track is that u had to walk up hills to get to the track found our seats and watched the race after the race the track was very good at getting people back to their cars and back to the highway will attend again.

It's Bristol Baby!!! Need I say more? This was our 1st Bristol experience and it was ALL that and more! A tad bit of rain which caused a delay... which allowed us to see the cars get covered and the blowers dry the track! The FULL Experience for us! Good time and Gr8 Memories!

    Forgot how fun it is!

by AutoEd on 9/19/23Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

I thought the race was a terrific experience. I have not been to a NASCAR race in several years and I truly did forget how much fun it was. I would have very few criticisms, but if I had them it would be the lack of restrooms in the vendor areas and really mediocre food inside the track. Mr. Caldwell should take a visit to an NFL stadium and see what the food and drink looks like there. Overall, that is a really small gripe. We went to all three races and it was just a fantastic experience. A super value as well. I've been to several NASCAR tracks and Bristol rates right at the top.

    Let’s go Buescher!

by Chris on 9/19/23Bristol Motor Speedway - Bristol

I was originally going to give this a 4 star review but I’m giving it 5 stars. Most people nowadays like to review things with how inconvenient it was for them. Why was I going to give it 4 stars? Well, I had never been to a race at Bristol. I bought parking tickets 3-4 days before the race (I don’t recommend this lol) and had to park forever and a day out from the track. The walk was awful. But guess what? That’s my own fault. I’m not giving a 4 star review because I didn’t like how far I had to walk. By the way they have shuttles … but I also wasn’t waiting in the line for a shuttle. I had a great time at the race. One of the best experiences I’ve had. I highly recommend buying an infield pass for the pre-race concert and driver introductions. Since the motor homes are outside the track and the haulers and pit meetings are inside the track, the only access to and from is walking across the track back and forth. With the infield pass it got me into the track walk and I was able to check out the cars pre-race and I was even able to get autographs from Carson Hocevar, Alex Bowman, Aric Almirola, Ryan Preece, Harrison Burton & Joey Logano. Now I can cross off Kentucky (Busch & Cup Series), Atlanta, Nashville & Bristol. Next year, Charlotte! I’ll definitely be back, albeit much better prepared for the walking. Oh and LETS GO BUESCHER!
