About

Nahko and Medicine for the People on Tour

Nahko and Medicine for the People are best experienced in concert. That's where this sprawling musical collective come alive, in the fertile call-and-response with the fellow travelers they call their fans. Nahko and company are on a journey, and it's got a lot to do with the self-discovery and healing that music makes possible. The group have been embraced for their positive messages and multiethnic musical approach, and they've become confirmed festival favorites, touring with the likes of Rebelution, Michael Franti and SOJA. Nahko is known as much for his political speechifying and spoken word as his singing, and any live show is sure to include both good vibes and powerfully political, justice-oriented content.

Nahko and Medicine for the People in Concert

The exuberantly tattooed Nahko, also known as Nahko Bear, grew up in Portland, Oregon. He was adopted into a white, religious family, but his birth family's heritage included Mohawk, Apache, Filipino and Puerto Rican ancestry. He has called on that heritage throughout his musical career, entwining songs of personal discovery with messages of social justice. Nahko showed musical aptitude early, playing piano and eventually picking up the guitar before going on to become a musical director. But the road called, and Bear took up an itinerant lifestyle, eventually landing in Hawaii. The beginnings of the band formed there, where Nahko met Australian 12-string guitarist Chase Makai, drummer Justin Chittams and trumpeter Max Ribner. Other musicians have come and gone along the way, but the band's core includes six full-time members. The group released their debut album, Dark as Night, in 2013, and followed it up quickly with 2014's On the Verge. They reappeared with Hoka in 2016 and the album reached 72 on the Billboard 200. In 2017, Bear returned to his solo roots with My Name Is Bear, an album of songs he wrote before forming the band.

Nahko & Medicine For The People One Of The BEST Performances

by Marissa on 10/14/19Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

I accidentally scheduled a red-eye flight that arrived home to Florida at 6:30 AM from Vegas the day of the show. I thought the show was the following week. If I had known I would have come home a day earlier so I could be rested for it. I debated not going because I was so jet lagged from the trip & flight but I made it happen. And I am sooooo glad I did. This was one of the BEST performances I have seen ever. I saw Nahko last year in Florida & thought they were AMAZING. But this show was EVEN BETTER! Loved the new material, the musical solos, Nahko getting down on stage & so much more. You know a band is musically talented when the crowd hears brand new material that hasn't even been released & everyone is loving it! I HIGHLY recommend seeing them live!

by Jimmy's Custom Tiki Carving on 10/14/19House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

Hallelujah! First time at House of Blues Orlando. What an experience. Such an intimate venue, full of amazing artwork. The staff was awesome. Nattali Rize was the opening act...WOW, she brought it. I still get covered in goosebumps when I think of her performance, incredibly moving. Nahko & Medicine were remarkably entertaining. Such a fun time. Love music with a message.

If you’re looking to feel safe, supported, joyful, hopeful, empowered, and empassioned this is the band to see! The crowd is so loving and the band exudes positivity and enthusiasm. Through many shows, I’ve found that the sound quality at the State Theater decreases whenever the instrumentation

    100% Worth it.

by Hourglass on 9/19/19Deluxe at Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Often most bands are worse live than on record. Some are as good live. These guys however, are BETTER. They bring all of their energy to the stage and infuse their performance with their passion. How many concerts have you been to that people are moved to tears by the end because of how touching the show was? These guys are must sees!

Bear was amazing/viewing could’ve been better

by Cakes on 9/18/19Deluxe at Old National Centre - Indianapolis

Such a healing and soul fulfilling show. The pillars really are a pain though because it blocks prime viewing of the concert. Plus the whenever the trombone was playing you could barely hear the vocals. Trombone and fiddle players were badass though.

Recharged and ready to make a difference

by Gr8fulChic on 9/17/19Deluxe at Old National Centre - Indianapolis

As a Medicine Tribe follower. This show hit right at the perfect time in my life. After being down with a chronic illness. I refused to miss a Nahko and Medicine for the People show, as I knew it would recharge my soul. It did that and more. I was able to score a table right next to the stage and enjoy the show at my energy level. Watching the passion of each and every musician on stage as they dug so deep and became one with their instruments. I will never miss a Nahko show when they are in the region. It felt good to “put down the weight”. Peace and love.

Wasn't really a fan before the show. Went with wife for her birthday. Had only heard a couple of songs, but after this amazing show I'm a fan now. Real energy and power for sure.
